- When the worlds of ‘Cobra Kai’ and ‘One Piece’ collide, you know you’re in for a good time. Such was the case when superfan Jacob Bertrand, known for his role as Hawk in ‘Cobra Kai,’ surprised the cast of ‘One Piece’ in South Africa.
The enthusiasm was infectious as Bertrand met the real-life Straw Hats, comprised of Iñaki Godoy (Monkey D. Luffy), Jacob Romero (Usopp), Mackenyu (Roronoa Zoro), Emily Rudd (Nami), and Taz Skylar (Sanji).
From touring the set with Godoy to practicing Sanji’s kicks, Bertrand had an absolute blast. Because his favorite ‘One Piece’ character is Zoro, the cast and crew arranged for Bertrand to train with the stunts team and master one of Zoro’s epic sword fights. And of course, true to his ‘Cobra Kai’ roots, he showed no mercy.

I love seeing the bright side of Mackenyu. Especially when I read so many haters commenting about his personality being too serious and stoic.
He is such a charismatic and relaxed man.
I just love him. We need more seasons of OPLA, the straw hats casts are so wholesome.
Mackenyu was already a huge celebrity even before one piece and to combine that with his intimidating character zoro i would also be nervous meeting him one on one.

It is natural for Japanese actors to be serious and stoic when acting, but they are relaxed man and funny at the same time on their private time. There is no contradiction between being serious and being a relaxed person.Thier style seems to be too serious for foreign people but Japanese always behave as professional on their job. But he was born and raised in the US and actually Mackenyu's stoicness seems to overwhelme other young Japanese actors, so it doens't matter whether he is japanese or not maybe😂 But the fact doesn't mean that he is a too serious person. He shows humorous and bright side. Zoro's stoic character on live action seems to be a little exaggerated by a director for accentuating Zoro's charactor's difference with others, as a Japanese, along a certain typical image of Japanese samurai swordmen in my opinion.

I have been told by both coworkers and friends that I come of as serious or taciturn but then are surprised how funny and relaxed I can be when I have a chance to relax and be myself.

Crushing hard on him aside, Mackenyu is amazing and a phenomenal actor, martial artist and good singer.

There is just so much about this to love. Jacob, the One Piece cast, and the overall energy and joy is just infectious. Season 1 was phenomenal and let's hope we can find Jacob a cameo or role in Season 2

I have to commend the directors and producers of the One Piece live action for absolutely nailing the casting. I literally couldnt imagine a better case to portray the characters in real life. Heard it's a big hit amongst Japanese audiences too.

8:46 Jacob took to it like a duck on water. I’m not surprised considering the fact that he’s had 4-5 years of fight choreography training. Granted it is just a rehearsal. But it’s still pretty cool seeing someone who is seasoned versus a novice. You definitely notice a difference, because the movements are much smoother and more fluid.

Never liked Jacob's Cobra Kai's Hawk in the beginning, but he eventually grew on me and I learned that he was just heavily misunderstood (a lot like Johnny played by William Zabka). It was great seeing the One Piece cast and Jacob meeting 🙌😁

I think if they casted him, the best characters for him in my opinion is
1. Mr. 9 ( vivi’s baroque works partner)( if they don’t cut him)
2. Chopper ( if they change the voice a bit or if they want to go for a older sounding chopper)
3. Young Franky ( I think he’d be perfect in the flashbacks with Tom and rocket man )
