Bill Duke on THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR

- "Spook" being both a racial slur and slang for CIA agent, Ivan Dixon's filmization of Sam Greenelee's 1969 novel is one of the most astonishing Hollywood films of the Nixon era. Not merely subversive but a genuinely revolutionary call to arms, it's not exactly polished but it is passionate. Original distributor UA pulled it from circulation for years.

Bill Duke, come on man!!! This classic is begging for an updated version and you're the man to do it. Just think about it.
Was dyin when Bill Duke said, "I'm not exaggerating, I don't know how this film got made".
🤣🤣🤣
I mean there's a reason they banned it. Imagine what it could've done for us tho...
The possibilities...
“Yesterday…a book”
“Today…a movie”
“Tomorrow…a reality”
Right Duke?
I never realized they made a film of the novel. Plus - I love Bill Duke!
Nippsy hustle said he was gonna complete an album based of this structure- he quotes this is how he bases his whole operation learn and teach
I never knew this film existed. Looks awesome. Thanks Mr. Duke.
The Judo in this film is actually pretty well choreographed. Like they used actual Judokas
fuck yeah!!! Bill Duke AND this great picture!! Thank you, TFH!! this made my top ten youtube videos of all time!!
I didn't know this was Ivan Dixon's next film after Trouble Man, much less that it even existed.
Ivan Dixon was a bad brother!
wow excellent review.
I found the movie weak compared to the book. Greenelee's story shows how the segregation in Chicago spread even to the Federal level. They raid a National Guard armory in the south side of the city, because they know it'll be staffed entirely by Black men and thanks to the racism, they won't be motivated to put up a fight. I think the biggest point of the book is that if the majority of Chicago gangs unified, AND they were more proffessional about their crime, they could do more damage.
I miss Bill Duke. The revolution is just around the corner it seems...
Great film
One of THE great American films.
Awesomeness!
The problem of gang members coming back from the army with "training" hasn't caused a whole lot of problems. In war, the soldiers have to work together, but back in their neighborhoods, they return to their old turf and back to being rivals again. Criminal gangs never unify. Revolutionaries fight for a cause, but criminals fight for what doesn't belong to them.
Anyone remembers Gordon's War?Good flick about a Green Beret who comes back to Harlem and fights drug dealers.
This is the next atep
Bill fucking Duke!!! That dude NEEDS MORE WORK!!! MAKE THIS HAPPEN, HOLLYWOOD!!!
supercool...Good one...BILL DUKE
who would make this today? lol. Obama, BLM, Al Sharpton, almost anyone!
What studio would approve it?
