Aikido can be translated as the “Way of Harmonious Spirit”. It is a relatively new martial art created by Morihei Ueshiba and based on ancient Japanese fighting techniques. Although a dynamic and very effective form of self-defense, taught to the Tokyo Riot Police, Aikido strives for non-aggression and the peaceful resolution of conflict.
Full version of our popular introductory video on the history of Aikido and what exactly this intriguing martial art is all about.

I'm 55, been training since 14 - kempo, tkd, kickboxing, then found aikido in '89. I tried getting back into kempo a few years back, and my body started to break down with hip and knee trouble. aikido gives me little trouble, and I feel like I'm still getting better every year. this is the art I'm practicing until I die. Train well, friends.
AWESOME.!!!! THANK YOU.!!!!
Great!
im glad
Getting better at throwing will opponents to the ground huh? Well that's just peachy ...But please don't try it on anyone who doesn't want to be thrown friend
After a number of years in kyokushin karate it took me perhaps a year to take on an understanding of aikido - it is such an intelligent and wholly "beautiful" martial art. My brother is third dan aikido and his daughters impressed me so much with their simple disabling techniques against my super buff sons - I was determined to find out what the "secret" was. As with everything it is repetition and bruises. The dojo I chose is tiny, serious and serene. Thanks Hutt city aikido.
LOVED YOUR SHARING AND GREAT DESCRIPTION. GOD BLESS.
its just like a dance but your opponent moves more then you do
Just as there are some great mma fighters, and some not-so-great, there is a range of abilities for aikidoka. But before you make ridiculous comments about its practicality, go find a really skilled aikido sensei, and put your hands on them. You'll probably end up on the ground, with a broken wrist, wondering how the hell you got there. I trained in hard styles for 15 years before finding aikido. I scoffed at first, but it only took falling from 2 or 3 magnificent throws to recognize the art's effectiveness. Another 25 years on, and I'm still learning something new every time I train.
+Timm Muth Nice input mate... Takemusu Aikido practitioner on this side... 8 years of practice so far. Cheers
YOU ARE VERY, VERY WISE.!!!!!
I enjoyed it a lot. Thanks !
Great video! Thanks for sharing...
enjoyed the video!
Excellent demo with enough correct detail and proper technique to show the form and the dynamic in a way that does justice to the art of aikido.
Bonjour! Je pratique depuis 1987 en France.
God bless you!
What a wonderful video. I miss training in Aikido. Thank you for sharing the Do with the world.
Wow, I can see why the techniques work. He is using Tai sabaki to move his body in a way to throw his opponent off balance. We do this in Karate too, but mainly to avoid an attack and create a superior angle to counter so he is never able to find you because you are always cutting corners. The same footwork is used in Aikido to gain leverage.
Konishi also studied under Morihei Ueshiba. Konishi demonstrated Heian Nidan to Ueshiba who opined that Konishi should cease pursuing such ineffective techniques.
Konishi created a kata he named Tai Sabaki (“body movement”). A notable difference from most karate kata was that it was an unbroken sequence of actions.[4] Morihei Ueshiba remarked, "The demonstration you did just now was satisfactory to me and that kata is worth mastering." Konishi would later develop two more forms based on the same principles, and he named these three kata Tai Sabaki Shodan, Tai Sabaki Nidan and Tai Sabaki Sandan.
-wikipedia excerp on Yasuhiro Konishi-

Maybe, but the answer to what you just said is in the statement you made about unbroken techniques. Old karate's techniques were unbroken. School children's karate is a broken sequence of techniques. It is not the Heian kata that was ineffective, but the basic way it was practiced. The movements from the Pinans are often identical to aikido.
Its not the art, but the practitioner and his or her knowledge of the art.
well put together, great video :)
Thanks for sharing.
very informative kind of video.
amazing!!!
Thanks for this wonderful video, hopefully more and more people will get to enjoy the endless enjoyment that is aikido, so lovely to see the little ones having fun and learning this great art.👍
NICE VIDEO !
Actually in reality Aikido is a very violent martial art. Know why? The students learn to go with the flow of being thrown and reversed. A naturally resisting opponent that doesnt know that, will get seriously hurt as their body goes one way and the rest of them goes the other.
i know what you mean but it isnt violance: you have the Uke and the Tori, one does a technique other one gets the technique used on them, the one who got the technique used on them have to work with his opponent, and they learn Ukemi (roll) so they dont get hurt when they fall.
only if it will be used in real life becuz of someone attacking you then for your opponent it hurts becuz he dont know, but he will feel where to go.
A naturally resisting opponent would not stay there as if carved in stone. That's not "resisting".
they teach you awesome techniques from day one. i miss the dojo in my city i want to go back...
Ben fatto!
grazie
Nice!
began martial arts at 12, am 52 now. Began with Shorin Ryu but quickly moved to Kali were I spent most of the beginnings of my life long training. Then I found MMA which led me to BJJ, there go's many more years. 15 years ago I found Aikido and it has been my primary art since. I will always be influenced by my other training but it now all flows together seamlessly through my Aikido.
awesome master
I trained in aikido years ago , i liked it very much...
why did you stop?
nice one. i like aikido.
Everything has its time and purpose, there is no complete martial art, learn from everyone and everything, fit in what works for you plain and simple.
Thank you.. exactly what I was thinking..
nice!
i preped for Aikido by taking Judo and Kendo. i have read that as well and thought to practice these before entering Aikido. Sensei seem frazzled when I said I was practicing Judo and Kendo for Aikido but they greatly respect Ueshiba's teaching and never treated me as less of a student.
If you haven't, I highly recommend reading Aikido,The Dynamic Sphere.
Great Martial Art
Atemi is still taught in most Aikido schools and the blending you refer to as "slow and long" are training devices to acquire sensitivity to the attackers energy and leading that energy. You are probably right in saying that these dont work as techniques in the street, but thats not the point of this practice. It depends on how you use Aikido thats all.
Aikido is very much a martial art and could be applied very easily with other skilled fighters. Aikido is also very spiritual and its this part that you probably refer to as being "not a martial art". During training we seek the non-competitive flowing nature of Aikido where there is 'no' technique just energy.
this is the best martial arts i want to learn it
Japanese martial arts very nice
More professional and form about most Japanese Martial Arts and how its taught. Judo included.
Very true bro. Peace be with you also.
Even the oldest Japanese person looks younger than other people of the same age. Rice and fish, im telling you guys!
Once i experienced the "real street" fight and aplied aikido technique, even tho i know abit of judo techniques. The speed i train at class and speed i done it in street was really diffrent. In class its slow and calm, in street its was fast and not so cute looking. Basiclly as our trainer said: In real life you using 3-5 techniques from aikido and do the them so well what your oppent would be done. Im not saying that Aikido superior or anything, its just a choice for everybody.
Aikido is about working (AI) with KI ! Not for streets! But what type of streets (Big question) ? In real streets things that works is only guns, shockers or knifes etc
i do Aikido, and if something happends on the street you can better just go away, when its like when you cannot go away, then you will defend with aikido. its harder when someone has knife but against gun it sure is possible,
Me gusta!
that ando tsuneo guy is really good. his katate mochi shihonage video is very good.
i miss doing this .....
"Direct" iriminage is what we call it in Aikikai. We don't usually pin with that one. Nage is clinging to uke's leading arm, using it to finish with the kote-gaeshi pin.
I use to think Aikido was a sorry art until I started training in the art. Now I understand what it really is and it is a very good Budo.
No, Aikidoka is the correct Japanese term, I've definitely heard it spoken by my Japanese iaijutsu sensei. He referred to himself as an iaijutsuka. As far as I know, when you write the "ka" in reference to a martial artist, the kanji is written differently than what it would be when phrasing a question (should you write it in full kanji rather than hiragana). Also, awesome video from the Yoshinkan-Ryu folks! Cheers from the Vancouver aikidokas!

What a wonderful philosophy for - not martial art - to become one with our opponent
Beautiful art. Joining is aikido. Separating is jujutsu.
I always seen Daitoryu being a thing for palace guards, Judo and Gracie's being the battlefield thing.
I would love to learn aaikido
Yes, I have a similar opinion.
Now you are saying yourself that it dont work in the streets. That was my point. Imagine quick jabs or hooks as attack. Its just too fast for feel, or flow or lead energy. In the Moment of arm contact his arm is already moving back and the other hand hit. But Aikido is still beautiful!
Because she's quoting what a typical person would say. She's not actually speaking her own thoughts, it's a rhetorical strategy
muito louco
I train in aikijutsu and believe me, it's not the art of peace for me. When I leave the mat I'm hurting, sore and tired. My wrists, knees and back feel every fall, joint technique and.throw. The philosophy may be peaceful but the uke (me) feels it's effectiveness. However, I will persevere until I can't train any longer. It's my destiny.
Japan my have made Morihei Ueshiba but it didnt make Aikido. Aikido was developed by a very spiritual and talented martial artist who just happened to be Japanese. There were thousands of other great Japanese martial artist but Ueshiba was truely unique in that he actually had spiritual awakenings which not only would have influenced his state of mind and how he saw the world but he also applied it to his martial arts and created Aikido.
It is a fun dance.
Tem gente que sobestima o poder dessa arte, quem sobestima, engana se
Can someone please tell me where these classes are taught in the USA? Thanks!
Look around buddy, aikido is everywhere. but i warn you, if you are going to start aikido to know how to beat your enemy to a pulp, then you have started with the wrong foot. Give it a try though, and have fun!
Agustín Molina Thanks. I don't have any enemies..I am a very peaceful person..but I would like to be able to defend myself if the situation arises..but without having to kill a person. Hopefully I can find some classes near me. =)
i train aikido but more brutal name of the club is SENTO AIKIDO
Did i hear the fantastic contraption theme music in there
guess you didn't watch this or understand the basis of Aikido. Aikido is never for competition. IMO, it's the most philosophical an adavanced martial art as it brings the idea, one they stressed in the video, you become one with opponent. The main goal not to become the victor, but rather become one with your opponent and thusly bringing them into your well being, you both walk away victors. Real world application, you immobolize your attacker in a way they are not harmed, true Budo.
Reminder to the average Aikido practitioner. O'Sensei himself claimed an Aikido student must be skilled at least about black belt or so in some other martial art. This is just something I've read and even noticed in a lot of practitioners. By the way, Aikidoka? That's a question not a word ;) I've studied Japanese and Aikidoka is only something foreigners say. Nihonjin do not say Aikidoka or Judoka or Karateka. Adding KA to a word or phrase usually makes it a question! Genki Desu Ka? Genki Desu!
Stiff as a tree trunk......mysterious martial art aikido for robots !
My point is Aikido didnt just come from Japanese culture which was influenced by other culture anyway, but it came from somebody who had enlightening experiences - or spiritual awakenings.
偉い!どのぐらい勉強しましたか、インターネットでそんなに上手な人あまり見たことないです。絶対N1級じゃないでしょうか :)

+Igaluit right? c:
bluetailedkite1 is not a troll. That's an insult to trolls everywhere.
I hate to say it, but there's nothing worse than when martial arts is painted as some mysterious thing from the far east. It's refined fighting techniques, sometimes applied as a sport. Boxing is a martial art.
It's because you said 'peace be with you' I think.
Ok your trolling was successful!
Also, if an Angel really were to protect you, that Angel would then be fighting, and so practicing a martial art before your very eyes.
Competing in breaking necks and other joints is impractical and stupid. Love the bit at about 9.04.
What is the technique at 3:48
Toyoda special. Footwork is not specific, but she steps out of the way, unbendable arm to the chin, then immobilisation.
I read aikido is done with the means to kill
xiealic is right, but 'KA' in japanese can mean a lot of things
per example the 'KA' in Aikidoka is the same 'KA'(家) from judoka, karateka (空手家), mangaka(漫画家), and a lot of other things, but there are other "ka"s like the ka that HoGreasy mentioned, the ka that you put after a word to make a question. like in ビール欲しいか?. the use of the ''question ka'' is very informal. lol my comment space is endin
Aikido İT'S SUBLIME!
I wish gangsters on the streets offer me their hands and arms like this.
Do you really think that's the only form of attack in aikido ?
they havent show you everything, punches also happend and we have to do the same technique on them, the grabbing is that you dont have to be fast, but that you first only learn the technique.
@@jamesguitar7384 Aikido promotes peaceful harmony, attack does not fit into that spirit.
@@Aleksandr_Skrjabin I've watched every Aikido video available on UA-cam, I watched also all Aikido DVDs I have. I think I know the strength of Aikido that even if I have a knife, I dare not attack an Aikido Sensai. It's its speed and flexibility that resolve conflict situation. Like you cannot hit Mohammad Ali or Mike Tyson, because they move faster than you can reach them, so are Aikido Sensais; and when you make effort to reach them, you eventually offer them your hands and your arms what they swiftly grab before you realize. No punches needed.
@@ngomyle every technique can be used on every attack, but they dont show you the tanto (knife) or punch on camera
Sparrings in Aikido are excluded for another reason. Not serious to do this, like melee chess or foot motor racing.
Is Steven Seagal's Aikido - Japanese martial art?
J.D. Maya yes, he learnt Aikido.
Steven Seagal, martial arts and personality make hIm awesome.
J.D. Maya Yes, he studied Aikido in Japan growing up and was the first American to receive one of it's highest rankings.
Bob Jamer ehh? He is American?
Born on April 10,1952 in Lansing, Michigan
One of the first to run a dojo in Japan.
Yoshinkan looks so stilted at times ughhh.
The "non-violent" martial art. As if throwing guys around and snapping their joints was non-violent. Non-violent martial arts is oxymoronic. It's like saying "the non-violent sword".
with non-violent they mean without kicking or hitting someone or hurting them, you see them being thrown but it doesnt hurt they are trained to fall without pain. safety is one of the most important thing in Aikido
This women sounds like she just woke up from the bed

"I don't know a lot about Aikido"
Why would you admit that?
thats honost
I did not trick you. I use that tag name because it makes me laugh. You where simply too silly to notice :)
as long as they grab the wrist...if not then pointless
If you break anyones bone, you're doing it wrong.
I'm weird for counter attacking a religous nut that was spamming me on various pages telling me what to do with my life? erm ok..
A ballad dancer has a better chance in a fight then a akido practitioner. At least ballad dancers have strong legs and are light on their feet. Seriously I will choose a Ballad dancer over an akido practitioner in a real fight.
Theo Quach That's true... Even hip hop dancer and gymnasts is a better fighting style than aikido...

This video takes Yoshinkan, one branch of Aikido known for its obsession for "form" and its stiff movements (others call this "Pinocchio Aikido") and misrepresents it as simply "Aikido". This is very misleading. Other Aikido styles are very different.
Jajajaj....Pinocho Aikido!! En una època, admiraba este estilo, pero al ver como comienzan y terminan las tècnicas, con esa ceremonia innecesaria y tediosa, ya no me gusta tanto. Prefiero Aikikai.
In my dojo, we practice an aikido based on flowing with the enemy. We have to go from rigid to soft forms constantly and it's very fun to learn.
Agustín Molina Well, then you are certainly not doing Yoshinkan.
i do believe i'm not.
+Derukugi2 "Pinochio Aikido" - it's the first time I hear that expression, but I find it ridiculous and demeaning... I find Aikikai's aproach sloppy - everything's fast and blended, but the angles and timing are wrong... you need structure and positions to develop muscle memory through repetition - that's what Yoshinkan and Takemusu develop, and that's why the techniques are so strong when preformed fast... if your angle is wrong, you're techniques will never be strong
It's a shame that we don't have any Yoshinkan Aikido dojos in Nevada. I really like the hard style of Yoshinkan. We do have other styles here but they don't appeal to me.
throwing people around like rag dolls, using there energy to do it with, the art of unbalancing, and you not trained ,you will land hard, sometimes too hard,JAPANESE POLICE STUDY THIS,no games, and they apprehend karate fighters
Watch Daito ryu. Aikido isnt much more than rounded more fluid Daito ryu. Also it isnt realy a martial art. Against skiled fighters it wouldnt help much.
oh shut it
Just saw "Nanjing! Nanjing!" -
"known as the non violent martial art aikido reflects the spirit of japan..."
Well this is akward...
the rape of nanjing did not reflect bushido values at all, merely the manner of a few military generals.
everything is ok about aikido until you say that it's effective
only at some dojos they also train aikido for the real life which i choose to be in it really goes difrent, and there is still *no violance*
@@Aleksandr_Skrjabin aikido for real life doez not exist, i'm an Aikijujutsu black belt and i spent about 10 years practicing it thinking like you that itbwas effective. Until the day i sparred with some friends ...

No coment. Aikido no for self defens
That's not how it works, Grace builds on nature, God will almost never send an angel. I hope you realize that Jesus spoke with many soldiers and never once did he mention to them to leave the military, not to kill, or not to fight. Not to fight is not one of the ten commandments, neither is not to kill. In every text, the Aramaic word for "murder" is used, not the word kill, much less the word fight.

stolen from korea original name is hap ki do.......
Hapkido and Aikido were both developed in part from Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu. Aikido did not come from Hapkido as you incorrectly state.
Laszlo Gq nope. Koreans copied Aikido. learn your history, bro. Even the founder of Hapkido brags that he trained under Ueshiba in Japan. Lol lol lol
Ironically, Aiki-jujitsu is one of the few things Japan did not get from Korea, but Korea got from Japan.
