- This Aircraft: Manufactured by Republic Aviation in Evansville, Indiana, and delivered to the USAAF on June 27, 1945. It was placed in storage until March, 1948, when it was assigned to an Air National Guard squadron. FHC's Thunderbolt is painted in the colors of the "Tallahassee Lassie," flown by Seattle-born Colonel Ralph C. Jenkins. He led the 510th Fighter Squadron, initially in England and later all the way through Europe to Germany at the end of WWII. Colonel Jenkins may be the pilot who attacked the staff car of Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, wounding the German commander.
While the size of the average man stayed about the same, the size of the average fighter plane, and its cockpit, increased during World War II. This image shows the spacious working space in the Flying Heritage Collection’s P-47 Thunderbolt. It’s not surprising that the interior of America’s biggest single engine fighter of the war would have the largest cockpit too. It was so commodious, in fact, that it caused pilots of all nations to take notice. Pilots who transitioned from flying Spitfires in RAF Eagle Squadrons were shocked by the size of the plane. Compared to flying in the cozy cockpit of the Supermarine’s bantam defensive fighter, the inside of the Jug seemed disturbingly roomy. British observers wryly observed that one might slip off the seat, fall to the cockpit floor, and really hurt themselves. When a P-47 was captured, the Germans were equally puzzled by the Thunderbolt’s interior. Luftwaffe General Adolf Galland wrote that the cockpit was big enough to walk around in. Other German pilots, used to the comfy if-not-cramped cockpit of the Bf 109, felt that everything was out of reach. Another speculated that a pilot might be able to dodge bullets simply by loosening his shoulder straps and leaning to one side or the other as he flew.
The mechanics took cowling off of the P-47 Thunderbolt yesterday. Under that familiar silver mug lies its massive Pratt & Whitney R-2800 “Double Wasp” engine. The demand for the 2,000-plus-horsepower powerplants was so great during the war that auto companies such as Ford, Chevrolet, Nash, Buick, Continental, and Jacobs built them under license to bolster Pratt & Whitney’s output. (The one in the FHC’s aircraft is a Ford built-engine.) The R-2800 powered not only the famous Thunderbolt Army fighter, but also the Navy’s Hellcat and Corsair (and other aircraft too). The engine was so sturdy and dependable that it reached almost mythical status among flyers. Smashed by ground fire or starved of oil, pilots said the Double Wasp nearly always kept right on growling.
FHC's P-47 is one of the few that have the Turbo actually working. The exhaust sound is Very loud and as macho as ever.

My all time favorite WW2 Fighter fast tough and well armed it did everything and did it well usually bringing it's pilot home still flying with incredible amounts of damage including cylinder heads shot away and heavy damage to wings including one occasion with 4 ft of wing lost through a collision with an antiaircraft gun tower the airplane ran over on a strafe pass

I hear this all the time. I even read claims by people who they say they know that i supposedly happened to. But I've never even seen a picture of it, not even in the books I have.
I love the Thunderbolt. Top two U.S. aces in Europe flew them. I read the book, “Thunderbolt” when I was in high school. It was written by Robert Johnson, the second highest U.S. ace, with 26 kills. I think it’s still available if anyone’s interested.
She was badass at high alititude too , especially the P47M , nothing could touch her (470mph) other than the ME262 , and the Jug shot down a few of those also 🏁❤️🤩
@@davegeisler7802 There was a version, not used in combat, with a top speed of over 500mph. When I was a kid my grandfather had a huge collection of National Geographic magazines. A lot of the issues during WW2 had articles about the military. I remember one specifically, about a P-47 breaking the sound barrier in a power dive.
I highly recommend the book I mentioned in my original post. One of the funnier things I remember was Robert Johnson’s first dogfight. He had never fired the 8 guns of the plane. The first time he fired them the plane shook so bad he thought he’d been shot down.
@@enemyatthegate3394 ive heard stories of the crew chiefs with the 56 th , 61 & 63 rd FG hot rodding there P47M Thunderbolts with 72 hg of manifold pressure , tweaking the wastegates and using a special 100/150 Octane Fuel and they were pushing between 480-490 mph 🏁

Grateful for all the people who work on and keep these beautiful aircraft in the air for us to watch and hear, i have lots of favorite German, British and even Japanese aircrafts, but too few American if i had to pick the top two it would be the P47 and P 51 and it was great to see them fly together on this clip

The P-47 was the King Tiger tank of the air, and the perfect ground support platform as well.
No it wasn't. It did very well in the GA role but plenty of them were lost to ground fire. I get so sick of hearing these 'flying tank' comments from people who don't read or don't understand aircraft construction.
Most were built right in East Farmingdale LI at Republic's main plant on Conklin St. The only thing left of their sprawling plant is the one building that houses the American Airpower Museum which has a number of Republic aircraft (F105, F84, A10). They also have a flying B-25. The P-47 is no doubt my favorite WW2 fighter aircraft, due to its superlative performance and local history here on Long Island....

I believe the Long Island plant built 9,500 Thunderbolts.
What impressed me about the P-47 was how much quieter it was than than the Mustang. I believe that can be attributed to the immense turbocharger in the Thunderbolt.

How could it possibly be underrated when the internet is chock full of people saying it was underrated and was really the greatest fighter of WWII (it wasn't). There are legions of people who have watched a few UA-cam videos and talk about how it was bullet proof, could get home with two cylinders shot away, could out climb and out dive any other aircraft, was impossible to shoot down, had steel plating underneath... Don't believe me? I have seen ALL these things in comments.
The P-47 was a good machine. It did shoot down 3,082 aircraft in the ETO but it is now decidedly _overrated._

I just read an account of the Schweinfurt-Regensburg raids and there was one flight of P-47's that lost three out of four to German fighters in a matter of seconds. It was described by the one survivor of that flight. Would you like me to quote it?

Total rubbish. It was made out of pretty much the same gauge of Duralumin as any other fighter. It carried about 85lbs of armour - about the same as the Spitfire - compared to 220lbs for the Hellcat. I promise you; half a dozen well placed 20mm hits would take it down. A single 30mm would easily do the same.

The P-51 Mustang has an “Achilles Heel.” It’s the coolant radiator. One hit in the radiator or coolant lines, you’re done and going down! The P-47’s advantage is its radial engine is air-cooled. 👍

Total bulltish. That trope has virtually nothing going for it, except in the minds of the fanboiwaffe. If you take the trouble to do some basic research as I have, you'll find that the losses that have actually been documented record show four basic causes: enemy aircraft, Flak, collision and flying into the ground.
And in the wash up, the P-51 destroyed 60% more aircraft in combat and 30% more ground targets than the P-47 in the ETO and did it in half the number of missions.
Beautiful to see that this P-47 seems to accelerate and climb fairly well. I believe it has the new type paddle blade prop that helped it climb much better.
The P-47 was the fighter plane that the pilots of WW ll loved the most. It wasn’t the prettiest but she could dish out tons of punishment and take tons of punishment and bring her pilot back to base.
No other American fighter plane of WWll brought back more pilots .

There is a book out by a German flyer, (I believe he was a civilian), who was employed to test fly captured Allied A/C: He was dubious about the superlative reputation of the P-47 among Luftwaffe fighter pilots who had met them in combat. As he climbed to high altitude the turbo charger came on line and he realized what a fantastic A/C it was. The great irony of it's role in Europe was that it, it's air cooled engine, was far more capable of sustaining hits from ground fire than were our liquid cooled '51's and '38' and it was assigned low level attack roles. It also prevailed in tests competing with other U.S. fighters in terms of stick forces in different flight regimes: there was always an even and most balanced response at all tines. It was far more expensive than the P-51 and that might have been a factor in discontinuing acquisition.

That unit was detached to Van Nuys Airport to be utilized in the film. The 'German 109 adversaries were the local Calif. National Guard A/C with wings adorned with black crosses.

Not true. The old 'one hit in the cooling system and it's all over' trope has become incredibly tiresome. The causes of losses that were recorded come down to four basic factors: enemy aircraft, Flak, midair collision or flying into the ground. And if you look at the stats for the 355th (the highest scoring FG for GA kills), you'll find that it did better with the P-51 than it did with the P-47. Same for the 78th.

I suggest you read Hap Arnold's letter to his Chief of Staff, Barney Giles. There was no mention of cost. He just told Giles to fix the problem - a lack of a long range escort - by whatever means necessary within six months. He gave Giles a free hand, including developing a new fighter from scratch.

At 19 years old my father was flying "The Jug" over Germany, Belgium, and France bombing the shit out of trains, ammunition dumps, bridges, troop columns, and escorting B-17's before the P-51 came along. It always brought him home safe thank God. What a beautiful and rugged aircraft. Now look what the 19 year olds are doing in this country. My Father flew P-47 D models and they received the new N model later in the war. He was on the front lines against the Japanese. all the way from Manila to Tokyo. he was on a mission up on the empire As they said when the Nagasaki Bomb went off all the guys in his flight thought they were going to die from the explosion they were very close. That is what America use to do to our enemies.

Those planes represent a time when true builders and craftsmen knew how to build stuff. No computers, freehand draftsmen...and they still work. Good luck trying to rebuild a computer designed anything to work, seventy years after obsolescence.

Indeed it's an amazing and heavy fighter. But it doesn't weigh nearly as much as a large twin engine transport. Weight of P-47 is 10,000 lbs, weight of C-47 18,135 lbs.

It has the fin at the rear towards the tail, wouldn't that make this a M model? Ik it's not an N because it has the elliptical wings. Or is it just a late D model after the d-28?
I believe a lot of the later Ds have the fin because pilots complained directional stability dropped when the bubble canopy was brought in. The fin on the N has a blunt edge to the front of it instead of blending in smoothly like seen here.

Yes,and they ran up their scores against jap planes that were 100mph slower than German planes. That is why the 38 had such a better kill number in the Pacific,than it did in the ETO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excuse me, what is the nature of paint on these 'naked' looking planes? Do they have on a shade of silver or are just unpainted, but with a highly polished aluminium body?
When you own the sky, there is no need for paint/camouflage that adds drag and weight to an airframe. This bird has bare aluminum without the polish. Some warbird owners polish them and make them all shiny. In wartime they didn't have a lot of spare time to sit there polishing the planes to make them look pretty. Navy aircraft, however, NEED paint in order to protect it from corrosion from the salt water. You tend to see those with a gloss finish to help reduce drag and make cleaning easier.

The three colored markings are for aircraft shot down and the non-colored ones are aircraft destroyed on the ground.

Major Calibere The 51’s would also do ground attack though. They weren’t as effective, but when the Jug’s weren’t available, the 51’s stepped up to the plate.

That actually isn't true. In any case, because altitudes are different, the results are more variable than for cars.
Apart from that, the P-47's top speed was of little value if it hadn't the range to support the bombers.
