"How boredmonkey found Zeitgeist" ---A Double Entendre
My family here in Abilene, Texas has always been Hi-Tech thanks to my older brother (12 years older). He recorded this off our C-band Satellite back in the summer of 1985. It was only a few months old. That's why I have it in stereo. Abilene couldn't hear stereo back in those days. L It was even late seeing in color TV, too. ;-)
After watching I went to an independent record store here, and had the owner try to order their album, "Translate Slowly" It took him awhile to find it, and I'm glad he did, because music has always been my Soundtrack to my life, it's like a time machine, just like photography. Maybe you should add their music to your Soundtrack?
    ~boredmonkey
They are now known as, "Right Or Happy"
I like the new name. In this World the odds are if you are right, you aren't happy. Happy is for later. ;-)

I was at UT Austin from 1984-1988 and discovered this awesome band through another student friend in 1986. I lost count of how many times I saw them in Austin and Houston, where I'm from. My good friend and I chatted with John Croslin during an intermission at one of their shows at Fitzgerald's in Houston. I have all their albums.

Awesome! I mean Mad Dog & Beans on 24th at Guadelupe. Even a performance at Libert Lunch. Its like watching a snippet of my youthful years in the ATX.

I bought Translate Slowly from Shadowplay Records in Norman, OK before I could drive. Knew zero about them or their sound. That LP still sits in the limited collection I've kept across 3 decades, 3 countries, 6 jobs, 6 relationships, and 8 residences. So, yeah. Great post. I enjoy it a lot.

Zeitgeist eating tacos? What a great video! It makes me want to listen to my old Zeitgeist LP and eat tacos too.

"Things Don't Change" - such an ace tune. I tracked down their debut album on vinyl years later -- the whole album is very good. I had their second album when they changed their name to the Reivers also - a shame they never found a bigger audience.

I won a trivia contest at a club in SoCal. My prize was a Reivers LP. So grateful that I learned about this great band.

Quintessential 80's college jangle band. Love everything about them. If I'd have had a chance to see them live I would have tried to marry Kim Longacre.

Back in that magical slice of time, when 80s alternative bands were touring, they rarely came to where I lived. Ann Arbor and Detroit were my best bets, but, back in those days, it was tough to know when they'd be anywhere close. Thankfully, through news from a local indy record store, I got to see a number of great bands, but Zeitgeist/Reivers are at the absolute top of the "Regret I missed them" list. I did send them a fan letter back in the day and I got a response! I still have it.

If you are old enough to remember when MTV played music videos you might be old enough to remember Jim Crow laws.

The existence of this footage, in this quality, pulled off a satellite feed and not from a 3/4" broadcast tape is truly remarkable.
And Peter Smokler shooting footage for early MTV... who knew?! (Not me...!)
    Thank you for sharing!

One of the great, unsung heroes of the 80's indie/rock scene. To this day, I truly believe John Croslin is Lou Reed's secret lovechild.

Pretty much was. It was a famous Austin venue called Liberty Lunch.

I saw so many great shows at Liberty Lunch (best was Paul Westerberg with Bob Mould as guest encore in 1993). It was really sad when they tore it down. The city sold 'em out to a big computer company and gave the company big tax breaks.
