Can't believe you got a willing volunteer to let you do an ABG on them...
That was my thought as well. Very brave. I salute the guy.
Sengcheek Haha I was thinking the same. Who would volunteer to have an ABG 😖
thank you very much. I think you are the only one who upload a real blood arterial extraction and this is what I want to see for long time. thank you again.
Thank u for the vidoe and thank for guy who allowed himself for the ABG collection procedure.
Thanks, several of the team took a needle for this video to get some good footage (including me). I may have fainted after standing to stop the recording... (Lewis)

Good. I don't know how many times I've done this procedure but it must be in the high hundreds. I use an iodine prep. and very much agree with the injection of a small quantity of local anesthetic first. I use an insulin or tuberculin syringe and needle with lidocaine It makes the procedure so much more comfortable for the patient. I also puncture the radial artery a little more distally where it is slightly more superficial and a little less mobile.
a short and very effective video for learning abg.....nicely and smoothly done..thanku for uploading this
excellent video guys
Nicely done!
Allens Test is also Capillary Refill Test for Dehydration and Platelet function/Coagulopathies
Great video! Just starting as an Rn at the end of June so this refresher was really helpful! Thanks!
Stu and Andy are the best! More please!
Thank you
why did you expel the heparin from the syringe? i thought you needed a little heparin in the syringe to prevent the blood from clotting?
I LOVE GEEKY MEDICS!
gio basta r u a gangsta
I've had this done so many times. Doctors are only just starting to offer locals first.
Thanks for this! I’m a neuro-nurse and we’re allowed to take ABGs at my hospital (in Sweden). However, no one at my unit seems to do the Allan’s test - is that a must in the procedure?
Charlie no, it has poor sensitivy/specificity and even if positive, then what? Should ABG not be taken?
The indication for the ABG in an emergent setting is almost always high enough that one should not even consider Allens test, in my opinion.
Best, Abraham, em doc, sweden
I'm not even pre-med. But this is fascinating. :D
Thank you so much!😄
great, thanks for posting
thankyou ....it helps me alot
Is that syringe different from a regular syringe ? I mean it looks like it has vacuum
thanks
I'm confused, are we supposed to expel the heparin or leave it in the syringe when we take abg? Thank you.
Definitely not. And afterwards you're supposed to the roll the syringe between your fingers to mix the blood and heparin together, and make sure that all air bubbles are expelled. Not sure why he is saying to expel the heparin in this video.
Heparin prevents the blood from clotting. Not sure why he's expelling it.
As long as you coat the barrel with heparin, it's ok to expel some. Too much heparin can result in a bad blood gas...
this is a great video!!!
great video Ilike it 😍
That ABG looks like a short sample, and looks like a VBG by the end of the vid
I totally agree blood isn't very dark
@@nightmeer6 ABG is not Dark. Venous Blood Is Dark. It was Indeed ABG.
Can you use Heparin sodium for the syringe to prevent blood clot?
If no Heparin how do you prevent blood clot?
Nice. Just what I wanted to know before I became a house officer!
thank you, i wish i could do it.
Great video! Do you have to roll the syringe to prevent clotting, or is it pre-filled with heparin?
Usually the syringe has heparin but the syringe should still be rolled to ensure no coagulation occurs while bringing it to be tested . At least that's what we've been taught
I do arterial puncture in rare cases of difficult venipuncture outside the context of ABG test. It scares me a lot and my hands tend to be shaky when i resort to this. Nightmare.
Hi from algeria
Just here to see what kind of bs my doctor's making me do now. Dammit this looks painful.
Why do we do allens test before abg sampling?
These bloody hurt. I think phlebotomists should be able to do this, they generally in my opinion are better at it.
wwoww i havent use any local anesthesia when doing the ABG @@
Him: Is it ok if I do a blood test
Me: NOOOOOOOO
Him: Ok
Me: If you move a muscle I'll shoot I don't care I'll shoot 😠🔫
Does it hurt at all?
In hospital settings, we don't use lidocaine at all. We simply stick. The initial poke will sting a little bit but the real pain is if the needle accidentally hits a nerve.
keren video nya. I like
1:21
Who really does the allens test?
I mean, cmon.
the white people
Tj Townsend maybe just a formality
I've never not done the Allen's test. And I've actually refused to procure an ABG on a patient who did not have sufficient ulnar circulation.
I am a med student in Turkey and we do Allen's test of course. Why would we take risks
❤😮❤
is there a special syringe for ABG alone ?
+SanjeevGeorgeV it depends on the devices used at your hospital; in the UK there is generally a special heparinised syringe for ABGs :)
Geeky Medics among regular needles and syringes, which type of syringe and needle is preferred?
2mm needle/syringe pack
can thrombophlebitis occur as a result of complication?
Well. No. Because you are going into an artery and not a vein. But you can have bruising and soreness at the site.
