Therapist suggested this exercise to me after scoping my throat. I just started today, but I am anxious to see if it works. The video was very helpful, because it added the importance of posture.
I’m 22 years old and this has been happening to me since I was 19. It stated in the beginning of 2019 and it’s been 3 years since it’s been happening. It’s hard to swallow juice, water and even if I wanted to drink wine. I hope this really works
Checkout UHN Patient education and their videos on Dysphagia workouts, I have it and I’m on a 6month journey to see if I’ll feel better after 6months so don’t lose hope
@@bhaveshsharma8422 Yeah, the benefit I got from it is that I often find myself forgetting that I have dysphagia on some days, which is a win for me because I used to feel it daily. My next goal is to be more consistent with the hope of completely restoring my swallowing strength all time. So basically I do feel a lot better my friend🤝
No specific optimal pressure. Higher pressure may provide more resistance. Most important is the angle of chin tuck - the subject needs to be able to chin tuck at least 20 degrees to activate the suprahyoid muscles during CTAR
Hi, this exercise will only strengthen the suprahyoid muscles, which will potentially improve the movement of the hyoid upwards and forwards. Unlikely will change the location of the hyoid at rest.
Sorry for late reply. If the cause of the issue is weak suprahyoid muscles, then strengthening of the suprahyoid muscles should help to elevate the hyoid bone better
Thank you so much. I really hope it works. I've been suffering with it since 2019 and swallowing food with water each and every bite. It's really shameful amongst people. But I don’t had cancer or stroke I'm just 20 years old. Can I do these exercises? Will it help?
you are most welcome. CTAR works on strengthening the suprahyoid muscles which will facilitate better upper esophageal sphincter opening. I hope it works for you. It depends on what swallowing difficulties or which part of the swallowing that are affected. Wish you all the best! Take care.
Make blood test its called a n.a. screening test to see if u have any autoimmune disease because i have scleroderma myositis and probably thats the cause of my swallowing problem since i was age 26 years old hopefully u don't have autoimmune but its better to check it out
My 80-year old dad is suffering from Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Recently, the frequency of his having aspiration has been increased. Swallowing food is OK but he has hard time swallowing medicines. Would this CTAR exercise help him swallow his medicine?
Depending on what’s the cause of the difficulty in swallowing medicine. Need a speech therapist to do a thorough assessment and possibly an instrumental examination to find out the cause. Then the therapy can be more targeted to your dad’s Condition. If it is due to poor epiglottis retroflexion or reduced upper esophageal sphincter opening then CTAR may help. Please consult a speech therapist.
Hi, it would be better to consult a speech therapist/pathologist to perform a thorough assessment so that the treatment is more targeted to your daughter’s condition.
Just wondering how the chin tuck being performed? What is the angle? If tuck all the way down till maximum range, it would be difficult to swallow. I have consulted some dysphagia expert before, I was told that Chin tuck should only be performed around 45 degrees. Posterior tongue tie unlikely would have any effect on chin tuck.
Good evening.. I have a query.. One of my uncle has a dyphagia after tracheostomy.. He gets vomit after taking any food through mouth.. He is suffering from hemeplegia ( PCA STROKE).. is this exercise can i use for him
@@singaporeswallowingspecial735 thanks for your quick reply, I was wondering if you are planning to share an exercice video to target swallowing initiation.Thanks.
hi, CTAR specifically targeting the suprahyoid muscles. It is not targeting the tongue muscles but it would be suitable if the suprahyoid muscles are affected.
Can be performed on patients who has swallowing difficulties due to stroke, deconditioning, head and neck cancer patients, and other medical conditions. Not suitable for patients with known history of neck or cervical problem. Thank you for asking.
Sir I have dysphagia last month I was gone with dilation tube but unfortunately it came back does this exercise will help to swallow pills? Pls rly and help me I don't want another dilation or I don't want my food pipe narrow again ..its very very scary Pls help me sir ...what can I do ...does exercises will help and another thing I really want to get rid with acid reflux ...what can I do sir ....please tell me This dysphagia is very scary 😔😔😔😔😔 Please replay help me and tell me what I do plss sir
Hi Sara, this exercise targets the upper esophageal sphincter due to insufficient elevation or the suprahyoid muscles. I am not sure of the location of dilatation and your Medical condition causing your dysphagia. It is better for you to consult a speech therapist to ascertain the suitability of this exercise for your condition. This exercise would not get rid of acid reflux.
Hi, your wife may practice this exercise as it helps to strengthen the suprahyoid muscles / act as maintenance exercise. As for other exercises/medication, it would be better for you to consult a speech pathologist and a doctor.

Thank you verry much for this interesting video. What ball size would be the best?
The size will depend on the individual's neck length. we used 12cm diameter rubber ball for the research.
Can this exercise be used to move the resting position of the hyoid bone up and back for people who don't otherwise have medical problems?
Hi, this exercise will only strengthen the suprahyoid muscles, which will potentially improve the movement of the hyoid upwards and forwards. Unlikely will change the location of the hyoid at rest.
I read somewhere it might, making your jaw appear sharper
Thanks. Is there an exercise for nasal regurgitation?
Thank you. Not that I know of
In your opinion, would this movement help raise the hyoid structure if it is lower than normal?

what is the diamitter of the ball?

does this improve the hyoid?
Yes, CTAR strengthen the suprahyoid muscles that contributes to the forward movement of the hyoid movement.
Great
