    I had a 1966 Chevy 2 (Nova) station wagon back in the late 1980's it had a bad voltage regulator and putting the new one in and "balancing" the strength of the magnetic field in the ( external regulator ) was a pain in the ass. I said to myself: there's got to be a WAY to put the more modern version of A/C Delco, internally regulated alternator on an pre 1973 Chevy ( or other G.M. vehicle ) I was thinking about it again tonight 3 am, Saturday August 14th, 2021 and looked it up on UA-cam. It's so simple ! A MILLION thanks to you for this great, great video. I don't understand why ANYONE would give this a thumbs down. - Jim in Buffalo, Ny

    The guy's REALLY good with important details. 4:50 He mentions that the threads on the STUD that sticks out of the alternator MIGHT be METRIC on the new alternator because these internally regulated alternator's were typically found or made for cars in the mid 1970's and later and G.M. and other auto makers were "farming out" or "outsourcing" the manufacture of parts to places like Canada and Mexico that - you guessed it - use the METRIC system. If you lose the nut for that stud and figure "oh, well, I have another one on the OLD alternator that I can use..." watch out ! If it's NOT the same thread style as the new alternator you WILL strip the hell out of the stud or snap it off. In either case you're F... screwed and WILL have to not only take out the new alternator that you JUST installed BUT you will have to disassemble the alternator to replace the stud. Take your time for crissakes. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of CURE. Slow and steady wins the race. P.S. as he mentions: don't OVERTIGHTEN that small nut you WILL snap off the stud. I've done it. I've stripped them AND I've broken them off ( no, not on the same job ) have you ever seen a 275 lb mechanic cry. ? It's not pretty.

    Great, now Herbie goes to Monte Carlo. All jokes aside, thanks. My beetle just got a new chrome Empi alternator to go with my new engine. The old external regulator one couldn't keep up with the 1916cc rebuilt twin port. It was on it's way out and started putting out 17 to 19 volts at my battery. Then it had a meltdown and threw the belt. Similar scenario with the gen light on the instrument cluster and exciter wire.

    4:20 When you pry back the "keeper" tabs on the female brass terminal connector you MUST be very careful to NOT be too ROUGH or HEAVY handed with them. Don't pry them back VERY far either they WILL snap off. These are the keeper tabs that the video instructor mentioned 3:31 about halfway through the video that you push down on to cause them to "disengage" on the inside of the original alternator's ( white ) plastic connection plug. SO BEFORE you insert each wire into the plastic connection plug for the NEWER style, internally regulated alternator - you HAVE TO pry the "keeper" tab, of each wire, back outward so that when you insert the wire into the new plastic connection plug it will be "kept" in place. You'll feel it "click" when you've pushed it in far enough. That will indicate that it's inserted far enough and will stay inserted. You can gently pull back on each wire after you've inserted them to TEST whether or not the keeper tab had indeed "grabbed onto" it's companion mounting surface inside the plastic connection plug.

    Time to.upgrade my 66 GMC. It still has the original external regulator and the massive 35A original alternator. They work, but 35A just isn't enough to support my mods (electric fan, halogen headlights, stereo, HEI etc). It's been running the fan right off the battery pretty well, but at night with headlights and wipers on, the voltmeter in the cab showing 10V barely. It's not that low at the battery I'm sure, that's just the drop through the harness, but it probably is an overall discharge with that much load on the old alternator. Amazing that it's held up so long.

    I am having issues with it charging, I did almost everything you did, except my alternator only has one smaller brown wire coming out of the clip, besides the red cable going to the positive side of battery.
    I connected the brown wire from the alternator to the original blue wire, my GEN light is only on when the key is ON, but turns off after I start the car. Once I start the car; it only charges just over 13 volts. Is that good? I am not getting 14+ volts like you are.

    Have I lost my mind or did some 16 year old get over on me? 😬

    @Chris Craft I'm considering doing this on my 69 Pontiac Grand Prix do you know if this would be the exact same for a Pontiac I have 2 wires on the bat terminal on the alternator I think the second wire is a fuse able link I see you only have one wire going to your bat terminal on your internally regulated alternator ?

    • @chriscraft77022
      @chriscraft77022  5 років тому +1

      yes connect those 2 wires to the lug BAT on the new alternator.. it could be an ammeter lead if it has a fused link.. it may be wired different from my chevelle but will not hurt anything.. the main thing is not getting an alternator over 75amp output

    I was able to replace alternator and battery with new ones but still not charging battery. I disconnect battery and engine turns off, I check with meter and reads 12.5 v with engine on but that's what the battery reads too so nothing higher when engine is on. Can this regulator prevent power or alternator from charging battery?

    Does this also apply to a 71 cutlass because I tried it and my GEN light is constantly on ,even with the car off then when I turn the car off atg the switch it continues to run until I disconnect the jumper from the blue wire

    So the guy I bought my truck from he had cut a lot of wires and added more for the CD player and an amp and other stuff like that but and I figure out most of it and tapes it to make it look nice however I didn't find ground wire like yours any suggestions???..... also is there another way to connect those wires without a "jump" like just cutting the wires and attaching them or do you recommend jumping it like that

    Cool, now when your regulator dies, you can spend 3x as long tearing the alternator apart to replace it instead of just unbolting it from the engine bay. JK, good video

      i quit rebuilding alternators like 18 years ago... i just warranty them out at oreilly if they go bad.. externally regulated is NOT the way to go.. the external regulators are over $60 the reman alternator is like $50

    • @mongrott
      @mongrott 4 роки тому +1

      @@chriscraft77022 Oh, I agree that internally regulated is great, but when I can rebuild one for $20 with bearings and brushes made in USA, I would rather spend $20 than spend $50 for one that's made in China on my personal vehicle. Internal regulators last a very long time, its just a pain of one does happen to die. For a customer's car, internal is 100% the way to go.

      The beauty of GM alternators is that they're all the same size dimensionally through the 70s and 80s, except for diesels. The easiest way to pick one, is to get one from a truck. 1979 would be a good year. If you have rear defrost or power windows, get a high amp option. If you have no electrical options, a mere 36 amp alternator will be fine.

    • @mongrott
      @mongrott 4 роки тому +1

      You'd want a 63 amp or lower from an early 80's squarebody/g body etc.. The optional 80 amp truck alternator is NOT the same dimensions, it requires a different bracket

    I’m going to change my 1972 Monte Carlo over. On my alternator now has R and F the R is white and F is blue. White is on top and blue bottom. My new alternator is same R on top and F on bottom. Do I switch to Blue on top? Thanks for your support in advance. Big A. From Cartersville Ga.
