    You could always replace all the 194 lamps with a 194 LED replacement lamps. They are super bright, they don't burn out, less load on the wires and switches, less heat to damage the sockets, and they act like diodes so you won't have to add a diode to cure the engine run-on problem.
    Thanks for all the great videos Chris!

    Normal I I don't cement. You have the better diagnosis explain & repairs & you saved me time & banging head against wall breakdown fit looking to those who are less &/or cockeyed Inept? The Exciter wire was my problem & It puzzled me thoroughly even with the one wire system I was getting no charge & I still don't know why? Job well done thank you.

      How did you end up wiring for the excider wire?

    Love your videos. Very thorough. My lawnmower has a bigger air cleaner element than your car.

    hello chris...i´ve been watching your site since i bought a 55 chevy belair that was sadly enough chaotically restored...electronics were a catastrophe as the brakes and clutch and suspension although it had new paint new interior, new floor exhaust ..a 350 cu.in with 5 speed..must have been from a pickup, the shifter went to about the roof..you first helped me a lot with my carb...had a carter..old..baught a holley double pump...750cfm...that worked as you explained...not good...did rebuild with your help and sold it..now have a holley 600cfm warrior..nice...at the moment my major problem is the alternator...that "kicks in" at about 1600rpm(Delco)..i´v seen on you video that you attached the no 1 pole to the accessory..the intelligent beasts that installed the motor getting the firing order totally wrong..ran terrible naturally ...installed it with a batterie cable to the plus pole of the batterie which is a very large gauge but should work ok...i think ???would be nice if you could confirm that..and on pole 2 a cable to the pole running to the battiest post as you have described..fine ...what i don't understand is the no1 connected to the accessory of the ignition...how does that work???am i putting in 12 volt to the accessory or is the accessory throwing a switch in the alternator??....how does that work and is there an other alternative than running a new cable all the way from the ignition switch to the alternator???would be nice if you find the time to give me an answer on this...i live in france and here you've got those experts that can't even fix your lawnmower but know everything about american v8s...bullshiters....and in the net there are profi sites that say it should "kick in"..which doesn't make sense to me..especially as i do not have a cable going to or from the pole nr. 1 at all...and by the way ...after all my research in the net..and I'm doing a lot by myself out of desperation...you have the most sensible and creative site of them all...have seen almost everything you do and must admit your logical mind is a hudge asset for everyone in need of help..are you an engineer and teacher as profession...???or university prof in cognito?? love your sites as they help and also bring me home again after many years living here in the ass of the world ..europe...can´t go home yet because of my kids...am 71 years old now but sooner or later ill make it...thanks again for you fantastic site and very digestible way of presenting ...gary (siehnel23@orange.fr)....HELP!!!

      I have the “gm 3 wire alternator hook up video”... yes, for NUMBER 1, you run a wire back to ignition switch or fuse box ON with key to a ACC or ignition with a DIODE if you don’t use the GEN light

    If you want to know the alternator output voltage, you need to measure it at the stud on the alternator. These older vehicles tend to have the sending wire buried into the middle of the harness along with the charging wire. Because of voltage drop, back at the battery voltage may measure lower. As long as it's above 13, it's not discharging the battery. I bet your alternator is putting out over 14V at the stud, using the case for your meter's ground connection.

    The dummy light was known as the "idiot" light back in the '60-70's when the Generator meter was dropped. This lamp was officially called the GENERATOR light, it GOES OUT to indicate that the alternator is charging. Also, per GM factory wiring configuration for the #2 "sense" terminal, it should be tied direct to the +12v battery terminal for proper charge sensing and not over to the +12 alt lug.

    Ideally, the at-idle system voltage should be at 14.1-14.9VDC. The reason for it not being that--in the case here--may be simply a matter of the factory wiring being so old & worn that it's built-up too-much resistance to allow said ideal to be achieved, thus requiring a "refresh"/rewiring of the vehicle's electrical system... for safety & reliability.

      the alternator is a remanufactured one that charged 14.2 6 months before the video.. nothing to do with resistance in the factory wiring

    Tried to remove alternate toggle switch & wire into ACCY on the ignition, but It still has voltage drain with the key off? I don't know?.. the toggle switch cuts the power when key is off & I can control the sch etching noise of the Altntr. It could be the regulator"'s bad, but it does charges.. I still need to remove/repair the rest of tampered wires, almost done?= Maybe?

    Would it be easier to replace the mechanical regulator with a solid state regulator ? That's what I did to my 1970 Pontiac Tempest...no more flickering lights.

      I have the EASY conversion video you should check out.. no, get an internally regulated alternator.. the old regulators work fine they are just obsolete..why spend MORE money to have MORE obsolete parts that can malfunction?
      my conversion costed about $40

    • @arthurporrata8882
      @arthurporrata8882 6 років тому

      The solid state regulator has no moving parts unlike the stock unit and it only cost $17.00 at Rock Auto. I'm not knocking your conversion, I'm just a purist and wanted to keep it stock. I also converted the ignition to electronic with a Pertronix ignition unit which allows me to replace the point only. Thank you for your reply and for sharing your knowledge.

    Instead of the light you can use a 470 ohm 1/2 watt resistor

And will my dummy light still function as this one did in this video? Do i need to install the diode on #1 wire too looks like you didnt have it in this video just want to be sure i know its a simular wireing system but dont want to fry anything lol i appreciate your time and videos thanks!

    So number 1 should be ran to accessories ONLY on the switch? or can it be ran to accessories/ignition? I ran mine to what I think is the original wire because it was on the 4 spot on the plug I believe and it came on when the key was turned on. what are the colors on the wires from the factory harness for F 2 3 4. thanks for the videos and the help.

    Okay I having a bit of a problem ? I ended up buy a 1971 chevy Monte Carlo ..for my first muscle car . but anyways I have to keep jump starting it .so I changed the battery and put another one in an still having problems so i changed the alternator ..but I end up jump starting it and it will set and idle for a few minutes and then the dash lights dim and then she dies??????????

    • @chriscraft77022
      @chriscraft77022  7 років тому +1

      +Dalton L.j Carr your problem is simple but can also be like 10 different things... you need to get a wiring diagram and start checking things out... the fact that you are mentioning the idle of the engine indicates that your problem is beyond the wiring... you have some fused links blown or wires crossed to start off...

    • @DaltonLjCarr
      @DaltonLjCarr 7 років тому

      Chris Craft okay I will have too look into it and what are the ten possible thing that could be wrong with it ? And me and my buddy just notice the other day there was three different hook up for the alternator

    • @chriscraft77022
      @chriscraft77022  7 років тому +1

      no, there is ONE way it was hooked up... if you lived by me i could fix your car in 5 minutes... maybe 3... free of charge.... you need to get the wiring diagram to show you where the fused links are and exactly the way it was wired... 71- and 72 were wired different.... and i think that is where your problem is....
