- Ben Sollee visits Deep End Ranch in Santa Paula, CA and plays an intimate performance of his song Letting Go. A genre-bending cellist and songwriter who combines classical artistry with bluegrass and pop, Sollee has created a unique and infectious take on folk music. Letting Go was composed for the soundtrack of Killing Season, an action movie released in 2013 starring Robert DeNiro and John Travolta.

Lyrics ©Ben Sollee:
It’s a long, hard road
Through a rough edged land
To the softest part of a man
And it’s lined with stones
Tangled with regrets
That are just too hard to forget
There’s rusty signs
Overlooked on the way
To the heart of a troubled man
And you can loose yourself
In the deep, muddy ruts
Worn through by the pride of a man
But, letting go...?
In a lonesome field
There’s a wild-eyed mare
Tied to the weight of a man
And she once ran free
With the wind in her hair
Breathing hard for the love of a man
He won’t let her be
She won’t let him rest
‘Till he learns how to forgive
But, let her go...
Forgiveness is a falling leaf
In the changing of the years
As it settles down to the cooling ground
Let it go
Let it go
Let it go
"Sometimes things become a part of you. Whether you like it or not."
Had the pleasure of meeting Ben at a party. Just a great guy who loves and makes beautiful music! Kentucky Proud!
I love this song so much, played it when I was depressed, heart broken and downcast. It helped me heal and now I play it as a triumphant sound. Helped me let go
I LOVE this song. There's something about that resonates with my soul, like a tuning fork.
Who is this genius? I am so glad I found this beautiful song. Can't stop listening!
Hey... thanks for checking out my music! Plenty of more to be discovered and I hope you enjoy.
@@BenSolleeKY Moves my soul. I connect when you hear honesty in the voice. Regardless of writer, if it rings true, ah.. the sweet spot. It gives reassurance that other have put words and set to music thoughts I shared. Reassurance and resonance.
I always come back to this one right here
i could seriously listen to this for hours holy shit he's so good
That part about the falling leaf 🍂 was pure genius. You’re a young bob Dylan
Just lost my dog, Ginger. She was my friend and companion. She was medicine for my spirit. Can’t let go yet. The loss is too much right now. But I’ll get there. Thank you for this song. It’s healing. Thank you.
Sorry for your loss.
This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. ❤
from the movie 'killing season' i found this gem. very moving song. hope to hear more. great video. thank you.
Thanks for listening and hope to see you out on the road soon!
One of the great things about living in Kentucky is having heard him live in several venues. But hadn't heard this song until today, when I really needed it. Great talent.
Words cant describe the way this song makes my soul feel ❤😊. I feel asleep watching killing Season, and i wake up hearing that beautiful melody and then "Let it go" i swear i was in a trance! I have listened to this song 6 times in a row now. It's therapeutic. 💯
Amazing ❤️👍 I watched the film of Killing Season. Its a part of sensational music journey with the Nature ! We are without any attachments ! Let it go !
Thanks Ben 🌹
THAT, boys and girls, is a REAL MUSICIAN!
Once again, Ben! So up lifting. Thank you. Can't wait to see make stuff together again!
Not tire of repeating
A MASTERPIECE OF ALL THAT IS WHATS HARD TO COMMENT ON..HIS VOICE WORDS AND MUSIC SAID IT ALL.
As a musician and recording artist, I actually listen to the music when I watch a vid. As I listened to the music over the credits at the end of "Killing Season", "Letting Go" came on and my ears perked up. "Who-the-hell is this guy?"
What a concept: a solo cello with vox! So, luckily, the producers were kind enough to include the credits for the music...and I became a new fan of Ben Sollee...even if he’s young enough to be my grandson!
I will be listening to more of his stuff because, in a word, he’s brilliant!
Evidently, there’s some hope for contemporary music after all!
Hurrah!!!
Same here.
Grow up.
I'm 53 and have found a lot of my favorite music/musicians in the last 10 - 15 yrs or so. Ben's one. There's a lot of wonderful music being made by young & not so young musicians today. I wish I were 25 again just so I could be around to hear what's to come.
Saw Ben tonight in concert in Cincinnati...It was Awesome!!! he is such a unique musical talent
incredible!
Thanks for the kind words, Sarah!
Usually I don't care for folk music... But the cello was amazing!
Me too, I am your new fan!! Today i was watching the movie ""the killing season"" and then I listened that beatiful song, so, I started inmediatly looking in You Tube, for the title and Here I*m!!! Thanks..
So impressed by this man.
Had the pleasure of listening to you on the Ohio River the night of Thunder. Great stuff!
Has to be one of the best songs I've heard in a long time.
Wow- the playing and the voice
He came to our school and was amazing!!!
What a talent this guy is. Da man!
Wow, this version is better than the studio version. Awesome song
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. Its deep, thoughtful and beautiful!
went to winburn jr. high and was in the orchestra with this guy OMG...... making us lexington natives look so good keep up the good work ...beautiful song
Love this song… the groove of the cello and the lyrics go straight into my heart
Every time I watch this song I get the chills. I met Ben at the Boulder theatre one time and he was not the nicest guy I ever met (I might have been boring out a bit too hard) but it hasn’t changed my love for his music
He could have been having a bad night. Not been feeling well. Family worries. Who knows? If you approach him again at a future date and get the same type of response, then I would say your theory is confirmed.
A very talented young man
After a workshop I had with him one day, I think I'll start convincing him to start teaching others becuase that day, I was enlightened by his unique style; his music is brilliant! I honestly haven't seen most of what he's done until I found his music on UA-cam but in all regards, keep it up Ben!
Congratulations landing this song on Killing Season! Thats great for all of us songwriters, thanks! This song deserves so many words of appreciation, I couldn't succinctly express just how much this composition plucks at my heart strings. I think the most notable aspect of this song is the inherent humanity in each individual performance Ben Sollee gives to the world. Each time I see and hear this song it is so warmingly familiar and yet so unique in each performance. Killin' it Ben.
Excellent !!! J'adore
One of my favorites 🎻

@@BenSolleeKY is that you the real Ben Sollee?
@@BenSolleeKY thank you so much sir. I salute you. You are precious 💖
I love your voice and your playing style like I didn't know a cello could sound so good. I'm definitely a fan.
Alexander MacDougall then you should check cello music out a bit more in depth because, although i love Ben's music, i have to say that a cello can do this and infinitely more, its one of the most beautiful instruments that exist ❤️😉
79soleil I totally agree. I've been listening to a lot more lately and it has become one of my favorite instruments. Now to learn it 😂

Amazing.....but grab an iron next time bro!
For the algorithm
What's the story behind the cello (and its scroll)?
Charles Plager From what I remember, it was an old "Kay" brand cello (originally sold through Sears I think) that he found broken, took to a respected luthier and had revived. That's the original headstock, i believe. He actually calls the Instrument "Kay".
That scroll is off a knilling porta cello, probably not original I've never seen them on a regular cello. No telling when it was put on there but it looks good.
