Gaelynn Lea: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

  • Gaelynn Lea, the winner of NPR's second annual Tiny Desk Contest, makes music like nobody else. Her sounds are steeped in the deep melodies of great Irish fiddle tunes, but her performance and singing style aren't traditional. More than 6,000 artists submitted videos in which they performed an original song behind a desk of their choosing with the hope of winning a chance to play a Tiny Desk concert at NPR. Gaelynn Lea was the overwhelming favorite of our six judges.
After voting for Lea, I wanted to learn more about her and her remarkable talent. Following about a minute of just focusing on the desk, her video pans to a small woman in a wheelchair as she plays a violin she holds like a cello. Lea has brittle bone disease, which made it necessary for her to reinvent the ordinary - and, in this case, a way to play the fiddle.
I also discovered, after selecting Gaelynn Lea, that she'd become friends with Alan Sparhawk of the band Low. Sparhawk first heard her perform at a farmers market in Duluth, Minn., where they both live. They've become friends who sometimes make music together, recording under the name The Murder Of Crows, so I also invited Sparhawk to join Gaelynn Lea for two of her four songs at this special Tiny Desk concert. There was hardly a dry eye.
    Set List:
"Someday We'll Linger In The Sun"
    "Southwind"
    "Bird Song"
    "Moment Of Bliss"
    Credits:
Producers: Bob Boilen, Niki Walker; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Niki Walker, Kara Frame; Production Assistant: Jackson Sinnenberg; Photo: Colin Marshall/NPR.

Indulge me for being oddly personal for a youtube comment. I've a degenerative neuromuscular disorder. It comes with it secret ugliness like sleepless nights of excruciating nerve pain. And despite the typical social masks we all wear, there are times I break down over the inequality of fortune. The reason I bring this personal confessions up is to put it into perspective how lovely, how wonderful and how much it makes the heart fucking soar to not only be able to share in such tremendous talent inspired despite the curses of nature, but also how generally positive, honest, and kind the comments section is here.
The real pain of disorder is often the degradation and feeling of being less; it genuinely lifts that weight so much when we've gifts like this. Thank you to both Gaelynn and her supporters.

My god... I am german, and english isn't my mother's tongue, but the reason I am at loss of words is, because this is so breathtakingly beautiful. I was afraid, my heart froze over over the course of the the last months, because it was just too much pain, anger and sorrow that broke down on me. And then I listen to this unearthly beautiful music, and read the heartwarming comments, and now there are just ... floods of tears, floods of tears.

I'm upset that this is the end of 2020 and only now discovering this wonderful artist. She sings and plays that violin/fiddle with so much heart. Gaelynn Lea, what a joy to watch. When she sang "Bird", she is the bird, her wings are clipped yet she sings freely, the joy on her face expresses her joy of life despite the challenges she faces. Amazing woman. Much love to you Gaelynn Lea.

A couple of years ago I attended a small music festival, and was lucky enough to see Gaelyn Lea perform live. The festival had a big stage for the headliners and a small stage off to the side, which is where Gaelyn played.
I don't think most people at the festival knew anything about her. There was a small crowd when she started, but within about 5 minutes the small stage tent was completely packed, and by her second song there were more people at the small stage than at the big stage. The crowd was utterly silent, it was only a 30 minute set, the hairs on my arm and neck stood up the entire time.

I'll always remember the feeling I had the first time I listened this. I often let youtube running for music while I'm working, not really listening what I hear, but this made me stop and care. I was fascinated by this strange voice, by this painful and beautiful melody. "Who's singing this ? I want to know." Gaelynn Lea's performance is beyond normality, in the best way. What she's achieving is incredible, of course, but the most incredible thing is how strongly she touches souls and bring me tears. I come back here when I feel down, broken, and song after song, her music heals me, from bitter to sweet.
    Every. Single. Time.
So, I wanted to thank you for this treasure.

Imagine someone you love pretending to be someone they're not to try to get a stranger to like them- that's how I feel about seeing you all do this.. You're all good people, but fuck, this video is not about the music, at all-- It's about showcasing how progressive NPR is, and allowing people like you to pretend they are "good" for awhile; letting you imagine that you're a nice person so you can then imagine what people will think of you and then feel better about yourself because you don't feel any sense of self-worth other than what others say is in you.
This was supposed to be a competition, and they turned it into this.. I respect this woman immensely, but if I were her, I would feel both cheated and like a cheat.

Actually I came here because I was exploring the possibility of playing my five string like a cello. Someone mentioned this woman, so here I am…..question answered. Then I found another site where there was a discussion of new kinds of strings that can render the sound of a violin or viola more like a cello. Thank you Gaelin……as I have discovered over and over again in my 80 years, as an outside the box person, anything is possible….you just have to keep working at it until you achieve your goal.
As a side note, it’s not so much about her achieving this with a disability…it’s about perseverance. Many people are disabled in their thoughts…..never able to complete a goal….are just dreamers. Let perseverance fill the wilderness of your mind by the heart action of possibilities being endless.

I’m intrigued how her fiddling speaks sweetly to a part of me I never knew I had.

Since the first time I saw this, it will always be one of my favourite Tiny Desk performances.

I am guilty of using the word "amazing" too much. Like everyone, I fall into speech patterns out of laziness and end up eroding the true meaning of words over time. Then I stumble across something like this and wish I had kept that word in reserve for times like this. This is beautiful, honest, and raw.
I am sitting at the computer typing and deleting, typing and deleting, trying to find the words to articulate why Gaelynn's music is so good and I just can't find the words.
So instead, I will just say thank you to everyone involved to making this happen on any level.
The world needs more of this right now.
Also I am not crying...you're crying...ok...I am crying.
