All I can say is thank you. Your teaching style is great, your narration is great, and hearing you talk through all the little tricks you use is invaluable. Excellent video.
So it does pay off by taking a gamble it’s gorgeous how beautiful 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Yes it does Susan! Thank you, and Happy Turning!
Kent, once again one of your videos has allowed me to use a piece of material that I had previously judged unusable. Thanks again.
Great, Bill! Yes, there is more out there to turn than meets the eye. ;) Happy Turning!
This is exactly the type of wood i have to work with. A big walnut limb that broke off early fall i cut for firewood, white oak cutoffs from a place in town that makes whiskey barrels, and just other odd and end pieces. Your videos r great
A pleasure to watch!
Thank you, Jim!
I continue learning every time I open any of you videos.
Almost hard to believe what you made from that chunk of wood.
Thank you.
Thank you kindly, Nelson! Happy Turning!
That’s so cool what your doing with the glue!
Thank you! Happy Turning!
OMG, Kent, this is JIT - a friend had a GIANT black walnut tree chopped down two years+ ago and gave me a trunk part full of cracks. I wasn't sure what to do and lucky me, came upon this video. Now I see it as a totally different prospect. Let's see what I turn with it. Thanks for the inspirations!
Fantastic Jeannie! Yes, you have some gems in there! Enjoy and Happy Turning!
I just got an old 80s jet from my neighbor for a 100 bucks. Your videos are helping me out big time man!
Glad to hear. Enjoy and Happy Turning!
Gorgeous!!!
Thank you! Cheers, Barbara! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
When doing the final nub removal, I like to throw a thick towel onto the bed below the work so that if I'm a clutz (and I am) the wood doesn't drop down and get dinged.
Got to get me some FOG wood.
Beautiful!
I'd really like to see a small one from that chunk of log turned
Fantastic tecnique!
Thank you!
Very informative. Thanks for posting!
Nice. I like your perspective. The bowl is in there. Find the vision and turn it out. Would like to see part2 where you turn the flat 1/4 sawn boards. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the idea! I might do that! Happy Turning!
Wow, the amount of spoons I could get from just one piece of that log!!!! I love working with walnut
Yup. All kinds of things can come from that log. ;) Happy Turning!
Very nice and a lot of instruction. I am a new fan and fallower of your vidios.
Welcome aboard! Thanks Dave. Happy Turning!
Beautiful work. I really enjoy the videos where you make bowls from “firewood”. As much as I like exotic woods, I’d rather us local firewood/scrap for different projects.
OK sounds good. I think there will be more firewood videos in the future! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thanks for great advice
I learn so much with each of your videos -thank you
Thank you, Nelson! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Sweet!
Nice work thank you for sharing
Thank you Jude! Cheers!
More magic from the wizard of wood, I wish you lived in Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you kindly, Deano! All the best to you and Happy Turning down under! ;)
That is a beautiful bowl and no wood is ever trashed you can do something with it and you showed us that
Indeed, Curtis! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
This is a gold mine of information!! Thank you!!! Super helpful to be able to look at a piece of wood in a different way!
Thank you, Jennifer! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
I love Walnut and that is such a gorgeous piece!
Thank you, Carol! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Kent, I'm at the 12:15 mark in the video. While I'm sure there is much good stuff to come, I want to say thanks for this segment. I have a log outside that's been sitting for months because I didn't want to throw it away but how to use it just didn't jump to mind. Your chalk work and explanation were excellent and I'm sure I'll bring it in and mark it up, though I'll have to ask a granddaughter for a piece of chalk. This 12 minutes was really helpful!
Fantastic Josh! Glad to hear and I hope you find your treasures! Happy Turning!
I am absolutely thrilled that you have made this video! I get really fed up with people who chuck out wood, which has a bit of a crack, when there are sections which could be used for something lovely. Thank you for showing how it's done!
Thank you, Stephanie! Yes, there's plenty of good piece hiding in there! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Wow, great lesson on how to salvage a chunk of wood and make something beautiful.
Thank you, James! Happy Turning!
Another terrific video! Always pick up some good tips. Thanks.
Great. Thanks, Bill! Happy Turning!
Nice job. Love the tips on securing cracks.
Glad you like them! Enjoy and Happy Turning!
Great ideas! I think I have a piece or two like this in my log pile so now I know more ways to utilize it. Thanks!
You got it, Eric! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Another treasure! Well worth the work! Thanks!
Thanks David! Happy Turning!
Treasure! Beautiful bowl.
Thanks, George! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
David P form Alexander,Maine I like to see your video trees to bowl so I can save my stock for turning
Thanks for entering! Happy Turning!
Always treasure… just think it through and adjust. You don’t always need a ‘perfect’ bowl.. well done Kent…
Amazing video
Thank you, Daniel! Happy Turning!
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
That would be a cheap way to get a lot of smaller lumber to glue up and make segmented turnings as well. I might have to stop by a local firewood and look through the lumber. A chain saw and small bandsaw you could turn a lot of waste wood into small lumber. I know Aromatic cedar is gorgeous lumber and around these parts of the wood , /these farmers will pay you to take them down and dispose of them.
Sounds like a plan. "PAY YOU wood" is even better than free wood. LOL Happy Turning!
Hi Ken, I like the work you have put into the demo. Your 'talk over' the video, makes more time but is more informative, also time for you to think of your comments. This makes a better, more informative , video . Great stuff.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you, Don! Yes, this format is not for everyone, but works well for those looking to learn. Thanks for writing and Happy Turning!
Definitely treasure.
Thank you, Mark! Happy Turning!
Merry Christmas Kent, thanks for all your lessons
Thank you, Art! Happy New Year and Happy Turning!
Good tips, as always, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Hi Kent, you teached me saving some wood. Otherwise I probably feeded my workshop oven with those logs. Kind regards from Egbert
Glad to help. Stay warm! ;) All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Chet Bisno,
Kent, as always you manage to relay numerous points that most demonstrators neglect. Lathe turning speed, specific tool angles and safetly tips are of particular value. However, also noted the lack of light over the bandsaw early. That degraded an otherwise excellent presentation. Keep them coming.
Thank you, Chet! Happy Turning!
Been absent for a long time but I do love this video & the brilliant way you explained how to salvage such a 'poor looking' piece of wood. The resultant bowl from this first piece of salvaged wood is excellent. Love the way you camouflaged the cracks that were remaining using wood glue & sanding dust as opposed to just using CA glue. Excellent job, thanks for sharing this. Cheers, Don from South Aust.
Thank you, Don! Much appreciated and welcome back. Lots of videos to catchup viewing. ;) ua-cam.com/users/TurnAWoodBowlvideos
Fantastic bowl Kent and a bunch of really good tips and info. Season's Greetings, John

Love your videos, you're easily the best teacher out there, all the best for 2022
Thank you so much! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Great video Kent! Nice piece. The quarter sawn grain is awesome and all from a piece of junk firewood. 👏👍
Thank you, Scott! Happy Turning!
Another great piece of work
Thank you!
👌perfect treasure.,,!!!
Your videos are so easy to follow!
Glad you like them! Thanks and Happy Turning!
Hey Professor! Loved this one so much, that is a great tip for sealing up cracks which before this, I really had no solution. Also, must say two thumbs up on the video quality, super delightful to watch. Thanks!!

Thank you, Steve!
So beautiful !! Glad I subscribed a bit back , learned so much . The lathe I have is a pen style so great chance to make bigger things 👍😇
Fantastic, Ben. Thank you and Happy Turning!
Love to watch your videos
Thank you, Mary! Happy Turning!
Love the pedestal base. Most of my turnings are from "junk wood" that I find. You are so right that treasures abound in these pieces.
Thanks, Barry!
So I started turning with a 100$ beginner 5 piece set that had a 3/8 bowl gouge from m2 steel and doing a little oak bowl from a cut off was a rough time, I had to sharpen every 5 minutes if not less. But then I got a premium cryo m42 steel 1/2 bowl gouge and it is a whole different story. I sharpen it every 20-30 minutes even turning oak(I do turn it greenish so that helps)
Beautiful work 👏! Some times the small bowls are the best. Merry Christmas to you and your family! Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!
Thank you! You too, Stephen! Happy Turning!

Amazing job, as usual. I love walnut !
And now I see the screen you mentioned in your Q&A video... :o)
Thank you! Cheers Thomas! Happy Turning!
I don't think seeing some cracking is all that terrible. As long as they're glued and won't be opening up any more I think they give the piece some character. It's wood after all, an imperfect medium. You could turn resin or metal to ensure an entirely crack free bowl. I think this is a beautiful piece salvaged from a potential piece of firewood.
I completely agree Thomas! Thanks and Happy Turning!
Rubbish!! Just as bad as using that beautiful piece of wood as firewood. Why not treat it with some kind of adhesive, epoxy even before turning it. Or break up the pieces according to the cracks; glue them up in whichever way to preserve it's shape and turn as a whole piece. What a waste.
Absolutely beautiful. Another work of art by the master. Merry Christmas Sir
Thank you and Merry Christmas Don! Happy Turning!
Merry Christmas, Kent. Thanks for another useful video. I'm a long time woodworker, retired for a bit over 2 years, and a fairly new turner, although I have dabbled in turning here and there through the years. I have learned, however, that turning is addictive once one jumps in fully, and lathe "necessities" are a real rabbit hole. My platform is a 66 year old Shopsmith. Although it can turn a 16" blank, 8-10" is really more practical due to its low speed of 750rpm. My next venture into the rabbit hole is to purchase Shopsmith's dedicated speed reducer, which will reduce the low end to just 100rpm - allowing me to turn some of the large Beech and Sycamore blanks I've recently accumulated.
Your glue tip is a variation of a technique I've used in my other obsession, building musical instruments. In my case, I use CA to flood the crack, then quickly sand it with black oxide wet/dry paper. It takes just a few seconds, and the crack will be stabilized and smooth to the touch. I've used the technique on several bowls. Just last week, I grabbed a small half-log of White Ash from our firewood pile and turned a live edge dish about 8" long. The cracks are visible but smooth to the touch, giving the piece a bit of charm, at least to my eyes. It's going to be a Christmas gift for a family member who has been eyeing some of my small bowls. I wish I'd figured out years ago how much fun woodturning is.
Tony, Thank you for writing and sharing! It sounds like you have a great set up and your family should be happy this Christmas! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
I also use an old shopsmith with the speed reducer, Tony. I can confirm it's worth the price. Much nicer to have the wider array of speeds available, and it feels a lot safer on larger things. Even 8" is gonna get that shopsmith walking all over the shop/patio without the speed reducer.
Thanks Kent, Often I’m guilty of not getting to the rounds in time and wind up with what you had. You did prove to me it is not a total loss.
Thank you, Len! Yes, there are gems between those cracks! ;) Enjoy and Happy Turning!
Hi Kent, I tried the wood glue -sanding trick on some cracks in a piece i was turning and it worked like a dream. Thanks for the tip. I might start turning more of the slightly checked pieces I’ve been cutting off (need to restock my perfect stock of blanks). Thanks. Hope you and yours have a very Merry Christmas. Cheers, Tom
Thomas, I was going to say the same thing. Kent, another great video. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our woodturning community.
Thanks, Larry!
Excellent! So glad you can now "see" more potential in your cracked wood pile. ;) All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Hi Kent, first of all Happy Christmas! Just some feedback that I think your videos are great. You are an excellent communicator, your videos are always entertaining and the skills that you kindly share are excellent. You deserve a far higher number of viewers and subscribers in my opinion. Best wishes for 2022 and I hope that it's a happy and successful year for you.

Great video and tips - really like how you explain the 1/4 sawn sections and how that brings out the character of the wood - bandsaw tips are very valuable also :)
Thank you, Mike! Glad you liked this. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
In glue and dust we place our trust, if that won’t do then putty must. A quote from my dear father who is no longer with us.
Great quote Ken. Thanks for sharing. Happy Turning!
Also merry Christmas to u and family.
Thank you and Merry Christmas to you as well. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Very good information. I have some cherry logs that were not prepared properly (my ignorance). This gives me good ideas how I can salvage most of that wood. Thanks.
