- Why your COLOR sucks - Don't buy LUTs before mastering this! - COLOR GRADING TIPS
In this video I will show you how to get perfect white balance through color grading. I point out how to identify incorrect white balance and how to fix it. I’m using DaVinci Resolve as an example but the language is the same in Premiere Pro and Final Cut.

Hey bud, If I want to start creating content like cinematic travel videos, where do I start? Photography/Videography course or start with editing course? maybe how to use a camera?? haha
Hello ! I wonder if you can make a TUT how to achieve this color tone: ua-cam.com/video/C-B86v-uxsQ/v-deo.html
Thank you.

Wow, last tip with the vectorscope on the midtones is awesome never saw that before!!!
For people working in Davinci Resolve I did a lot of research on the different tools of white balancing, here is a rundown how you can use each one.
Temperature and tint in primaries: Like Jacques said it is a global adjustment but something important to know is that it doesn't move the blacks. What it means is if your blacks aren't balanced to begin with, it's not gonna fix the image. The best use of this tool is for grading, not for balancing. You do your balancing first then if you want to grade it warm or cool it can be a great tool since it's gonna keep your blacks black
Offset in primaries: One of the best tools to nail white balance in my opinion, you can use printer lights for quickly balancing the overall shot, most of the time you can have perfect white balance with this tool but sometimes you might need to do some finer control with the lift or gain. The idea is to do broad strokes with offset then finer details with lift and shadows.
Temperature and tint in HDR Controls: A lot of people don't know about this one but it is crazy useful. You can tell the colorspace your footage is and it is gonna change the temperature and tint like if you did it in camera. For example on my a7siii my first node is hdr, I select slog3 sgamut3.cine and then I use the controls like you would with raw controls, I adjust exposure with offset if too bright or dark, then use temperature and tint to get a more balanced image. Way better results than using the primaries because resolve respects the colorspace and when you change the temperature it truly changes it like it would in camera.
Thank you so much for the video Jacques the last tip was especially really useful for me since I've always struggled reading scopes on scenes with no blacks, whites or clear skintones. Amazing as always!
Thomas! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this and in such detail! Glad you found it helpful.
in order to use hdr tip , do i need to use color managed workflow ?
@@zweiche no but you do need to select slog3 sgamut3.cine in the hdr panel. When on the hdr panel, click the 3 small dots at the top right of the panel, then you can select the color space and gamma.
@@BizzVisuals ty for repply! So even if i use colorspace transform to rec709 or use conversion lut or in colormanagement workflow and tag my clips as slog3 and cinetone , in all of these 3 cases i still need to do hdr thing with dots ? What about u have different clips from different cameras in ur timeline ?
@@zweichethe hdr node need to be before your color space transform
thanks!
Cheers! 🙏🏼
Awesome tips! thanks!
So happy to hear, thanks for taking the time to comment!

Bravo, amazing stuff here!
Thanks Chad, so happy you like it!
This is one of the best white balance tutorials on UA-cam. Subbed.
That means so much to me, thank you Taran!
@@jacques_crafford Wow! thank you for this very informative video. I'm a bit confused about one thing, shouldn't we white balance before the LUT on the node editor? From what I understand everything that comes after the Phantom LUT won't be in scene space but rather in display space.
@@jacques_crafford help? 😅
Befok love it!
Haha dankie bra!
Thanks a lot!
Thank you!
Dude.........thank you. This taught me SO MUCH in 6 minutes!!!

Great tutorial and advice!
How do recommend color grading long (30 min+) outdoor shoots? The color and light from the sun and clouds are constantly changing.
What do you recommend for camera settings and grading?
Thanks for the great videos!
Fantastic content! Thank you for sharing Jacques

You do such amazing job of teaching this. Thank you so much. I just found your channel not too long ago and im learning loads.
Thanks Luis, really glad you're enjoying the channel. This comment is most encouraging!
@@jacques_crafford You have really great skills and you also know exactly how to teach others how to use them in a very great way. I have seen so many people on here with courses and a bunch of great quality work but can't teach others their technique with ease. Yours on the other hand is amazing work and you share with ease. You speak on what the tools are and how to use them how it needs to be. Great work. You definitely have me as a loyal sub.
Thank you so much sir for this great knowledge📚 🙏
You're welcome Deepak!
Cool
Yay thanks!
How do you set up your color management settings so you can have a consistent look across multiple devices?
Great video! Super informative and great insight to approaching shots! Nice 👍

Hey thanks for your videos! What Asus Monitor you use?
I always learn something new from you even if I think I knew it all, that was so informative, thank you
That's what I want to hear Usama! Thanks man!
I've been doing some of this, but the video gave me some more tools. Thanks!

Great tutorial! I be just done Davinci’s Colour grading course, but I still picked up a few tricks here! Thanks 🙏 👍😀
That's awesome to hear, thanks Nash!
Where u get this course?
@@breakingpointpictures9380 from Blackmagic Design, it’s free, they run it once or twice a year via zoom.
Fast becoming my favourite UA-cam resource. Keep smashing it my man! 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Yeeew yeew thanks Fraser, that means a lot to me! Shot for the encouragement!
I'd like to see this applied to photography/RAW editing software
I started using scope a few weeks ago and it's changed the way I work with color. And this tutorial is very helpful.
So glad to hear that! Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Good video for orienting oneself on an entry level. Looking forward to give the color correction a go in resolve.
Glad it was helpful! You got this! Have fun grading! 🙏
Whoa! That midtones vectorscope tip is fire! Great video, man!
Yeeew thanks Dan, it was a game changer for me!
Hey love all your tips n tricks...If possible can you also make videos on how to take cinematic shots using a smartphone since we cannot afford a DSLR camera..Txs for everything 👍
Thank you so much! I'll see what I can do!
Great video Jaques as always 👌 I work normally with Edius but it is similar and I have DavinciRessolve too
Thank you my friend!
Such a helpful video! Still hesitant to switch from Final Cut Pro to DaVinci Resolve but the color tools are so awesome with DaVinci…
Thanks Robert! I promise the switch won't take that long and it's totally worth it!
Very Cool bro! Still getting the hang of Davinci Resolve but this technique of grading makes a hell of a lot more sense now.
Lekker bra, DaVinci het alles verander vir my! Jy gaan dit love
Another consideration to in your video when you determined the girl in front of foliage appeared to be too green is the phenomenon of Simultaneous contrast. It refers to the manner in which the colors of two different objects affect each other. You will notice in every facebook forum that someone will post an image of a face surrounded in green and in the comments people will tell the person that posted that the skin tone is too green. But if you actually scoped them they have no green. It's also why you should never make skin tone decisions when using a green screen until the actual background is removed and replaced.
Do you have any tip to color correction the asia skintone
That's the beauty about the Vector Scope, it works on all skintones so I wouldn't do anything different.
Hey Jacques I wanted to know what Asus monitor you use ? What’s are the spec of this monitor please
Hey Minato, I'm using the Asus Pro Art, works super well for me www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08K2GFDKM?ie=UTF8&tag=jacquescraffo-20&camp=1789&linkCode=xm2&creativeASIN=B08K2GFDKM
Jacques, Your advice is priceless. I just quit my job as a paramedic in the Middle East to do this fulltime @ 45 😆 - I hope to be as good as you.
Thank you so much for the kind words! 🙏 Wow, that's a big step, huge congrats to you! And good luck! 🙏
i almost always use vectorscope and offset to set whitebalance, i dont know when to use gamma or offset...
And that vectorscope section is
Yeah bro, it was a game changer for me too!
How you color grade for premier pro sir??? Thanks
I will see if I can make another one later but I don't have Premiere Pro anymore :(
Thank you!
Again you bring a new technique that I didn’t watching before.
But to be honest, it was a bit to complicated to understand completely.
Thanks David. Sorry if it seems complicated but it's so worth trying to understand. Maybe I will make a longer one next time :)
Really love your content & tips Jacques! Totally changed the way we work with video for the better. I would love to hear your take on colour correction and white balance for nightlife events or concerts where lighting tends to scew skin tones?
Thanks guys! I'm gonna do a few more especially focusing on Skintones, hopefully soon!
Wow!!! That’s exactly what I was looking for.
You are a pro and a good teacher.
God gifted you with amazing talents to teach this cool stuff with others
Thanks
Thanks for the blessing, I’m grateful for the opportunity to share these skills 🙌🏻
