Boom finally there’s a filmmaker out there that speaks the truth and talks about all the things you can use and make great content and fantastically gripping stories with just what you have in your pocket or what you have around you no thousand dollar lights no $30,000 cameras no trucks full of grip just think outside the box everything you said is absolutely 100% true And this is coming from somebody who’s been in the business for a long long time and still working with these things, the sun, the fog, the rain all of it thank God for people like you to tell others the truth, and that it needs to be told so we can spell all these myths about buying gear💪🏼💪🏼🎥🎬🇫🇷

I wouldn’t say gear isn’t ever important but lack of it is certainly no excuse for not making stuff! Thanks for the support!

00:47 is a bit misleading. Many scenes perceived as lowlight to the audience are more than likely lit to all hell. It's the way the light is manipulated and controlled, as well as post production during the coloring process that gives off the final look. It's a hell of a lot easier to grade a bright environment to a darker mood. It's nearly impossible to do the converse. Many behind the scenes of movies, like Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" is a good example to look to for this exact thing.
Otherwise, I think this is a really well done video for those who are looking for that extra creative push!

Hmm I suppose I could have been more selective in the shots for that section. You’re not wrong, especially night exteriors on many of the films I’ve worked on have large lights to bring up the ambience of the scene. I think my point still stands though that you can be creative with the sources, as demonstrated with my fridge scene. I’ve shot/ worked on many projects where there aren’t many light sources. YES it’s easier to light a scene brighter and grade it darker, but it’s still possible to catch perfect exposure in camera. (Take the rain scene I used from “The Lost Horse” for example. Check out that film too, we had no real lighting gear!) Hard for sure, but still possible.

So this guy is telling me I don’t need lights… While showing footage from movies shot with literally millions of dollars of lights..?

“The best time of day to shoot is golden hour..” No, you muppet, it’s just the best of time to shoot for a golden hour look. It can be the worst time of day if you need hard light or just to shoot a scene that takes place in the middle of the day.
