VR-4 Front Subframe Assembly

  • I am strong aware that my brake calipers are on the wrong sides. I already fixed that, but I left it wrong in the video just to test you. That means I also had to flip 2 of the brake pads. I don't know where on my workbench that I got it crossed up, but it's already fixed.
    All of the part numbers and the process for assembling a front subframe has been covered in this video either on the white board or close-ups of the labels. Details of some parts that were used in this video were refurbished or rebuilt in other recent prior videos of the Galant playlist. There is no point in restoring a car that doesn't have a solid subframe, so overcoming this step and assembling all of the rebuilt and new parts for the systems it supports is an enormous win!
    This short video covers at least 3 sections of the factory service manual and outlines my process for staying organized and thorough. I had a blast doing this and I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to bring you these informative, focused videos in an entertaining way. This stays fun for me because my Patreon supporters have my back and fill in the gaps where UA-cam does not. They deserve all the credit for the evolution of this channel and the quality of my videos that you see here. I'm just willing to do the work to bring it to all of you. I think an over-restoration is both due and appropriate for 1229. It's a much greater challenge today to keep it stock and original. Nearly impossible if it's not already all there before you start. But if it's 30 years old, original and all still there... then I don't know why you wouldn't powder coat it to preserve it? lol! See? I told you it's really difficult! Thank you for the compliment because I do cringe a little while modifying stock antique parts.

They just have a different approach and different projects, but both you and them are creative in solutions to problems unique to your builds, technical and careful where needed, willing to fabricate anything or make any parts required, attentive to proper management and handling of parts and so on... Plus, they are two guys, not one, so they can do more work and dedicated work in two areas, where you have to struggle twice as much and more to do the same as a solo artist... and yeah, i call this art, damn right!

      When Abe was born, the value of Gold dropped so substantially it caused the ousting of Federal Reserve Chair Arthur F. Burns. Totally ended his career. I'm literally here on UA-cam today because of this guy. When I got stuck on my DSM stuff in 2001, it was one of his friends that he built a DSM with who kept putting me back on track. I don't know if I'd have lasted this long in the DSM scene without both of their help. Half of this story is true.

    Hi I admire your work!!, I will torque the strut nuts with the tire on the ground under the car load.You should leave them just about snug, if not just a little loose. If you tighten them before you put it on the ground, when you do get the car on the ground, there will be tension on the parts, which means it will wear quicker

    • @Jafromobile

      7:16 Absolutely correct. For factory bushings. The poly bushings don't bind when the bolts are tight. They still move freely. I did include this detail in the voiceover because it is important for factory rubber bushings. The new LCA's came with that, and I removed them for poly.

      For imports you've either got a dual link or a McPherson setup. This being McPherson means the mounting points and geometry should all be about the same, you just don't have axles to deal with like I do. You've probably got a Koyo rack, too, because it's in Toyota-everything. It's great equipment! All the great Japanese legends use the same manufacturers. You pop the hood of a GT-R and there's Mitsubishi logos all over the intake and emissions controls. I'm really glad they all have so much in common because it opens up long-term options for organ donors.

      I guess I got my end links on backwards? I swear I thought I followed the drawing... the end links on the outside? I put my strut bolts backwards on the passenger side, too. If you put the pointed guide bolt forward, you will pick up every single plastic bag you ever encounter on the roadway. Don't ask me why I know because I'll tell you. Sometimes those plastic bags can work as an ever-tightening saw to cut through the CV boot. Check your LCA 12 x 135's bud... you'll thank me later.

    Thanks for all the videos Jafro! So I wanted to privately message you but don't see an option on UA-cam.
    I owned 1929 for about 2 years. It was a real fun car with a nice HX35 turbo setup. I did all the custom work myself. I'm very sad to see it in its current condition. I sold it to a young fella around 2010 and I'm assuming he destroyed it. I bought those black/machined rims and winter tires in 2009. Man that was a fun fast car.

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  7 місяців тому

      I knew at some point I'd find their former owners. You saw I spoke of it with the utmost respect. When you see your old dome light find its new home right over Jafro's enormous, engorged head... we will always have that connection. We have already pressed all the same buttons. I also have its pristine dashboard, and haven't made up my mind which car it will go into yet. Probably #148 because John saw the value of it as a parts car and bought it. I wish I could go get it, and I may try... It's 919 miles away from me. There's very little salvageable on the body unless it's plastic, and I'm sure the subframe and suspension are in the same kind of condition, too. I tried to jack it up from the body. The jack went up but the body and the tires stayed right where they were. It went "crunch crunch crunch", so I stopped. I would blame the climate more than the guy you sold it to. The reason it looks like the buzzards got it is because all of the good salvageable parts had already been removed, and I have more than half of them. It clearly was winter-driven as if that was its purpose. If you never did, then yeah, blame the guy you sold it to. But none of the old Japanese stuff fares well on salted roads. Salt+time is often much worse than abuse. Rust is a killer. Edit: PS:... the engine and transmission were long gone.

    Could you have used bolts and washers to cap the ball joint taper holes to stop the coating getting on that surface?

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  8 місяців тому +1

      Yes. Lots of ways to mask it with enough time, but it's easier just to ream it out after it's coated. Low spots (which would created pockets) would allow water and/or salt to seed rust, but if you used a sharp thing that cut only the high spots and contact surface away, it leaves the coating on the low spots, now there's rust protection on them. The entire hole isn't tapered, so the coating will still remain beyond the contact surfaces of the parts. It's splitting hairs, but either way takes time and it's the only real plus of using the ream beyond making a used hole perfect again.

There is an old, short, demonetized video of me doing my GSX's brakes' rebuild. Ironically it's demonetized by the record label of a DJ who made his entire song out of other artist's work.

      They're powder coated to match the factory valve cover color. It was the thing people did to these cars at their peak of popularity, so I mimic'd that to poke their brains. I personally think it clashes, but it was right for a Galant. It will look 100x better when the car's paint is all the same color.

    I like blasting my internal threads with long nozzle can of industrial grease for forklift chains... It`s made to serve a thing that sits outside, gets rained on, gets covered in dust, chunks of crap and possibly salt if it`s winter... Just have 2 cans, one with a long nozzle for internals and the spray cap for the male threads... It`s disgustingly sticky, even dish detergent doesn`t wash it off the hands in one go, so it`s what i advise for any chassis fasteners... Also, if you have a scratched area or a surface that you need to protect from rust, but painting it is just a waste of effort for whatever reason - this thing will do you good too... Just spray the area with it and voila, rust protected... Reapply every 6 months if it`s on a surface that has full exposure to aggressive elements or whatever that could wash or wear the grease down, but other than that, most places you can blast once every few years and it will just keep building up slowly... I find it almost to be a counterpart to the cavity wax... One is for cavities, the other one is for fasteners and exposed areas...
    Also, generally speaking, turning of the reamers backwards is considered a no-no among many machinists... I don`t know whether it`s a tall tale and a myth like backstroking the files which appears to have been debunked by fireball tools, but reamers i have not seen spun backwards like ever, at least not without someone starting a yelling party in a hurry over how it ruins the edge, which is said even for cylindrical reamers, which do not cut on the straight or spiral flutes, they cut solely on the small tapered section of the flutes at the lowest part of the reamer... The flutes are there to channel junk, to stabilize and guide the damn thing straight through the piece... Tapered reamers actually do cut on the flutes, so i think that you could dull those out by backspinning them or working them back and forth as if a threading tap... Not an admonishment, but just a thing to think about or question the next time you handle a reamer... Also, taper reamers seem to benefit even more from lubricants(not cutting coolants) and cutting oils than the cyl. reamers do, so always use it...

    Those bushings are binding so bad. You Shouldn't need to compress bushings around the parts of motion like that. A swaybar should freely(relatively) rotate in place once the bushings are torqued down. :|

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  8 місяців тому

      But they do rotate in place. This is just how hard they are to install with a bracket that must hook into the frame, rotate 90° and be bolted down on only one side. When you attempt to rotate the sway bar installing them they either 1) make a bent part of the sway bar try to share the same space the subframe occupies, or 2) not compress the edge that rolls against the frame, pushing the hooked side out. Once you get the brackets to rotate into place, they're fine. There is no binding with them installed, they just don't cooperate with the install. There are other commenters here talking about these, and I know I won't have any of this trouble on the rear where the bracket just uses 2 bolts on either side of the bar.

      I know I replied to this one?! Where did it go?!?! lol. They're powder coated to match the factory valve cover color. I had the valve cover restored by Detective Coating, too. Everyone was doing this to their calipers in the 90's no matter what color their car was, and I matched the valve cover to poke everyone that was alive back then in the brain. I think it clashes, too... but it's period-correct. It will look much better once the body panels are all the same and correct color of green. A color I may tweak slightly?
