Like you, I find some records sound better than the digital copies. However, there is no telling what they've done to the original masters to turn them into the digital versions, which makes it difficult to be definitive between the analog and digital versions. But this has encouraged my wife and I to go through all our old records to look for more gold. So far, we've found its been about even odds as to which will sound better.

Some of the early Blue Note records were originally recorded in mono. They will make the mono into stereo by splitting the signal left and right. You will often hear some instruments on one side while other instruments will be on the other side in the mono to stereo conversion. This may have happened with the Kenny Burrell album. That album is awesome.

Glad to see you adding to the channel. New/ different speakers, vinyl recommendations, DAC's, even some non-tube amps. I like hearing the opinions. I have found that if you listen fairly consistently to a specific reviewer/ channel, you get to understand their likes and dislikes and how they characterize the sound. I have a pair of RP-600m,s, a Bluesound Node, a Reisong 10 (among LOTS of other gear). So it is more concrete for me to understand your explanations. Of course, room character is always unique. At the very least, expanding your listening beyond viny, low power tube gear, and RP-600m's should silence some of the critics that complain that your reviews come from too narrow a set of equipment. At least we can hope!

Wanted to add a comment on the search for the perfect book shelf - I just installed SVS Ultra Evolution Bookshelf - they sound absolutely wonderful. Very detailed without the shrill. Great well rounded bass response - good enough that I thought my sub was responding, but when I turned off the sub, it was the bookshelves, had to see where my cross over point was set. These are easily driven - albeit I am running an Onkyo RZ70 with a fair amount of wattage - however, at lower volumes, tonality and clarity is not affected much. They are amazing for Jazz, Classical, Piano, Blues, etc. -AND - SVS or Crutchfield has a great audition / return policy to try them out. I believe I will keep them.

Man am I happy you like those s2 for now! For the same reason as you, I ended up with tidal for its easy integration, large library and high quality and they pay artists considerably more than spotify, Amazon etc.. Qobuz does sound better to my ears, and I used to have a subscription for both, and now that Tidal left MQA behind, it should all be lossless flac. But maybe MQA was better with the volume issues you are experiencing. I also think you are right that downloading digital files and playing them back is better than streaming…

Perhaps you should check out Audio Note Canada kit DAC's. They employ an R2R, non over/up sampling approach, sans a computational algorithm guessing at what was recorded. Employing the data stream that was actually recorded. Add to that an I/V conversion process via transformers with no analog filtering and a tube based output.
So many albums today are recorded with digital technology. Bought my last album(s), in 1982, Frank Zappa's, Shut up and play yer guitar, triple album. Always transcribed my albums onto R/R. First the Teac 2300SD, then a Revox B 77 which worked fine until the Ampex Grandmaster 456, tape fell apart. Been carrying 330 albums with me since, looking for a technology to record, the,"Vinyl". Been using a Tascam CD recorder to burn CD's from the libraries I've lived near since 2002, and playing back via an Audio Note kit DAC. But I desire a higher resolution format for my albums. The newer solid state Tascam recorders, sans moving parts, offer 96Khz, 24 bit word length format which my DAC is good for.

Paired with a tube amp is just magical. In the settings in tidal is you are rocking usb you can tell it to take over your dac so it has better control of it.

Just listened to the two versions of midnight blue on Tidal, and I agree the that the 2012 remaster sounds more pleasant. I dont know which one is more true to the original, but clearly the stereo imaging was in some instances reversed on the non 2012 version as well as just generally poor. There was a minor discrepancy in terms loudness, but maybe less so than on your system, as mine runs through a MiniDSP SHD Studio.

With the ear clone preamp my vinyl is a gamechanger, especially pre 1990 pressings. Im using a schiit bifrost uber dac which is no slouch but CD tends to sound "boxy" to me at times. High resolution sounds a lot better but for me it all comes down to the mastering and the loudness/dynamic range.

    Hi Stephe,
if your vinyl setup sounds better you have done all the right way!
I made somehow similar experiences. I have a technics SL1210 mk2, only a middle class MM cartridge AT-VM95E and a project phono pre-amp (I have allready all the parts for your EAR 834 and have to start building it up but didn't find the time yet). My phono chain sounds more lively compared to digital ! Especially if I have good vinyl material (e.g. daft punk 25th aniversy random acces memories). And even with average vinyl material like "Nirvana smells like teen spirit" the vinyl sounds more organic compared to the CD. And my digital chain is not that bad, a Marantz SACD 7001 Player with HDAM discrete output amps. But I use the marantz only as CD transport and use an external musical fidelity M1DAC from 2012 with upgraded caps and silver wires and new output XLR connectors. The DAC sounds a little more "foreward" compared to the Marantz internal HDAM modules. I don't know why they make such a fuss about this HDAM modules...
I once tested qobuz and I really liked it! It was a little better compared to CD via DAC and the microdetails were more prominent and music was a little more holografic and soundstage was really wide and precise and 3 dimensional. But I also have a spotify family account I share with my nices and nephews and I am not allowed to quit the spotify account, else they would be very sad. So I quit the qobuz account and decided to buy vinyl instead from time to time and spotify is enough for me, even if it clearly not as good as qobuz. If I benchmark it and give 100 points to CD I would give spotify 93 and qobus 105 and vinyl can reach up to 110 if you are lucky and have a good recording... These are only numbers and dont have to taken to seriously...
What really irritates me is that different computers connected to my DAC sound different. I used my DAC with three computers:
    1. 15 year old apple iMac24 late 2009 upgraded with SSD and max RAM via optical Toslink
    2. HP Pavilion x360 with i5 processor via USB
    3. HP Zbook 15 G6 mobile Workstation with i7 processor and 32 GB RAM (my company's PC for my work) via USB
Unfortunately my companys PC (HP Zbook) sounds best and I cannot permantly use it 😞. Second best but closely following is my old iMac24 from 2009. If I make a digital copy of a CD and play it from SSD via Toslink to my DAC it sounds a little better (relaxed, detailed and rhythmic with tight bass etc) compared to COAX digital Input from my Marantz CD Player. Worst sounds the HP Pavillion x360, it has more details in the high frequency range compared to the iMac24 but sounds somehow restless and nervous.
    Kind regards Burkhard

I get the feeling that music engineers/producers just cannot resist playing around with recordings when preparing them for new media. I have somehow managed to end up with three CD rips of the ABBA song Waterloo - all of them sound woeful. The soundstage on the original album is placed between the speakers but offset to the left. On a greatest hits album, it is also between the speakers but offset to the right while the third is more or less central but still woeful. Another band, The Left Banke uses that 60s hard left/right stereo on early recordings - drums in one channel, guitars in the other channel. I have rips of the 2011 Sundazed CDs and the 1992 Mercury compilation CD and the instrumentation is in the opposite channels. Who knows which one is correct? Note, the 1992 Mercury release has a much cleaner sound.

I fiddled with the filter settings of my Dcs stack I had in the past. (sold everything, won;t spend any money ever again on Digital) The point is that the difference I heard were in a completely other world that that of the many, many permutations I tried in the analog domain. The necessary filtering in digital adds it's own very strange to my ears characteristics to the sound, seemingly not related to anything in the "simple" analog chain.

About sources, my experience so far. Digital 'can' sound great, but flac/wave files bought (Bandcamp etc and cd rip) stored locally on flash drive, played through my streamer/dac (Bluesound/Chord) sound better than streaming. As for vinyl, many older vinyl analog recording I own do sound better on vinyl than their digital transfer counterpart. Is it bad transfer, engineers who can't resist 'remixing'.. I don't know.. but that how it sounds to me.

OK, this whole Vinyl vs Digital can become a ‘religious’ war. I grew up with vinyl ( yes, I’m OLD!). I have a refurbished Dual turntable with a couple of different MC carts and SUT. OF COURSE, I am rocking’ a Skunkie Designs Phono Pre! Certain albums in my collection have no equal in digital. PERIOD! I tiptoed into digital streaming about 7 or 8 years ago with BluSound. Meh. Then I discovered a DAC that changed everything! I bought into ROON and Qobuz, and that has been eye opening. The ability to listen to completely new versions of an album, and find whole new types of music in minutes is wonderful. That is the biggest advantage, besides hi-res audio. The sheer volume and variety of music literally instantly available. Don’t ditch your turntable, but use ROON and either Tidal or Qobuz to really expand your audio horizons.

I just enjoy the music more now with the massive catalog streaming has to offer.

As far as the volume issue on Tidal I've found that when it lacking in volume I turn off the volume normalizing and that almost always alleviates the problem. Just be careful when you go to the next selection to switch it back or the volume is gonna be too loud. I think their vol normalization needs work lol. As far as analog vs digital, I was a big vinyl guy until I built a dedicated Linux PC for streaming. I have a friend who worked in a local recording studio who hooked me up with some software that allows me to basically basically remaster a poor recording and store the settings for future playback. I can increase dynamic range, move the center image forwards and back as well as enlarge or narrow the soundstage and Eq it. I can also add 2nd or 3rd harmonic distortion overall or as I use it to enhance the sound of bass by adding 2nd harmonic under 100hz. I can basically make any digital file sound better than any vinyl pressing. So I'm a digital guy now.

Me and a buddy did a comparison of Miles Davis Seven Steps to heaven - SA CD, Streaming from Apple Music atmos, MoFi Vinyl and the original 1963 Vinyl
Shockingly the worst imo was the super audio cd
    Next worst was the atmos
Both had shrill at the top end and muddy at the bottom end
Then came mofi vinyl and the best was the 1963 recording - frankly it’s like brand new
The conclusion for us was the vinyls has the most accurate representation. The mofi version has the most clarity with pleasant sounding but cost double of the original vinyl -
Will do the same next week for MJ Thriller - SACD, Mofi Vinyl , cheap recent production vinyl and streaming
    Will report back
Will admit - This is on a 40k near sold state system (not mine) - exception is the preamp which is a Project Tube based - So mileage will vary - yes this system will expose poor source easily

I consider my self lucky that through all the relocations I have made over the years, I made a conscious decision to hold on to my LPs (not a fan of the word Vinyl, unless we are talking about cheap bathroom floors) and CDs. Both sound different, but a real vintage CD played on a good vintage CD player, can sound really good. I think it is easier to make a CD sound great than when you stream it. And CDs are so cheap, so get a vintage CD player (they are also cheap) is my advice to everybody who wants quality digital music. Oh and by the way, many people will tell you that a CD player must have a digital output so you can put a modern DAC on it. Well don't be surprised if the build in DAC blows the high tech DAC out of the water. And if you happen to have a Philips ladder DAC in you CD player, the modern DAC does not stand a chance, unless it is some high end model that costs thousands.

Beware the DAC snake oil. I used to think there was a massive difference between DAC's. Then one day I level matched my Denafrips Pontus II to the DAC in my LG V40 phone & set up a switch to go from one to the next with absolutely no delay. With speakers & headphones I was shocked to find that I couldn't tell the difference. At first I thought the Pontus sounded better, but then I realized I had lost track of which one was which & it was actually the LG phone that sounded better. But in the end I realized they were both virtually identical. Probably most of what people are hearing between DAC's is differences in output voltage as well as expectation bias. Audio Science Review had it right on DAC's all along. Most modern DAC's perform really well & don't have any measurable differences in the audible spectrum.

I'm with you regarding Bluetooth for casual listening (including UA-cam via smartphone). Does it compete w/ my Meridian DAC? Nope, but it ain't awful either. Comparing LP with CD/Streaming, I've found on many recordings, the LP has uncompressed content, while digital saturates with 5-10% clipping. Seems to be a sad trend :(.

Noticed that you have a tendency to listen to older music recorded 50-60 years ago using analog equipment. To my ears (I have had your recommended vinyl records for years) they all sound better than their digital remasters) If you try some of the latest digital music like the Billie Eilish song from the Barbie film (won Grammy award for song of the year) you might find it to be to your liking. Give it a try from Tidal. Sound great on my Node. My new philosophy is: analog recordings on vinyl, digital on digital. Simple as that

Yeah, i agree, mastering makes more difference than vinyl vs digital. That's why i collect the first editions of cds as they sound better to me than the 384737642782929th remaster that sounds like dog💩
Now about streaming, people go around all day saying streaming is lo res and all, idk about that, personally, i don't think so. But you may agree with them

One for my baby. On Frank Sinatra's Only the Lonely (1958). On the stereo vinyl version, the piano is way behind the right speaker, frank up front in the center. Then the strings come up behind him to the left. The whole album is beautifully recorded as if you're in the room. The horns are always on the right, strings always on the left, with perfect room ambiance. Then on the 2018 stereo remaster on qobuz, they compressed it all into the center. So disappointing

I can tell you they sound different but which sounds better I can't tell you. I can tell you there are some CDs that sound really awful, something I don't remember for when I collected vinyl long before CDs existed.@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics

Downloads vs streaming? Yes. Downloaded FLAC on usb/hdd connected to dac is asynchonous transfer - lower jitter, usually. On streaming you have lot of elements: modem, router/switch, ethernet port or wifi on yor dac, or laptop if used for streming. All of these inject noise, even the good ones. Same with jitter, may be significant = smear the sound. Some crazy folks have specialized routers, switchesm using fiber network cable (no toslink I mean), to get the cleanest possible digital signal to the dac. Well, this is this hobby about - isnt it 😂?

I use an Eversolo DMP-A8 DAC as my main source and pre-amp. It is also a streamer but I don't use it for that as it can also hold 4TB of music so I ripped all my CDs onto it as well as downloaded FLAC and DSD files. It has two power supplies, switch mode for the digital side and linear for the analogue side.

Local playback from a streamer direct attached device is a minimalist and potentially better sounding approach. Low jitter low noise i2s connection to the DAC can contribute.

Amazon music is equipment limited. When I listen to Kenny Burrell Blue note 84123 streamed through my Shield digitally passed to my Denon receiver I hear guitar only on left speaker, sax only on right. The streaming version on my system streamed at Ultra High Definition 24-bit/192khz at the original track, thru shield 24-bit/192, and decoded by my Denon at 24-bit/192khz. Also, I agree some vinyl recordings sound really good in the mids and high frequencies, but vinyl can't touch the bass reproduction of digital. Once the streaming quality gets above 24bit/96khz there is not much difference in sound to me.

    • @SkunkieDesignsElectronics

Lack of bass from vinyl is very dependent on the phono stage used.

Yes I agree, but vinyl can not reproduce the impact and dynamics of low frequency music without jumping out of the groove. No matter how good your equipment is.

This is why the conversational generalization of "digital" bothers me... it's as vague as you can get. Same with "analog". That could be a tape cassette, reel-to-reel, vinyl LP, and more. What should be the crux of your investigation is the comparison of two different physical formats of the same edition. For instance, the latest Blue Note LP versus its exact CD counterpart.

Hi Stephe 👋 So close to 15K subs! 🥳🔊🎶👍💜 I feel the same way about vinyl vs digital, not that digital can’t sound great, but I’ve put much more effort into my vinyl rig as you have. My DAC is just an older Adcom, but it can sound really nice.
Those Blue Note Classics and Tone Poet records just sound fantastic. My friend, Patrick (pbthal / the vinyl archivist on UA-cam) takes records and digitizes them, and is quite well known for how great his rips are. If you get a chance, please check them out. He’s done over 10,000 records over the years. I’ll try leaving you a link.

The remastered versions of albums on streaming platforms also annoy me. Often they're not an improvement in sound quality :-(
Might make sense to always keep hold of the original CD/Vinyl from when it was first issued.

The only reason I don't like Bluetooth is due to the fact that The music is interrupted if one receives a text message or a phone call.
As far as ease of use goes it's hard to beat.
Once again it's a matter of having and using the right tool for the job
