  • 2-4-2 Attack Structure: Central Forward Play
Today we will be discussing a new Center Forward Structure. In This Structure there are 5 different options every time. Utilizing these options evenly ensures the defense must respect all options at all times. It's important to have at least one forward (hopefully more) with technical/catch/pass skills.

What is not explained is how you set it up, for example, your 7 and 8 are on the right touchline i would have expected them to be on the left. The phases to have originated from first phase on the left, that your 2 and 6 may have stayed wide from so be on the left. Do you only play the structures from first phase? it is difficult to do it from turnovers etc. Also how do you manage the transition from being in possession to defence if a side was picking and driving playing no pass and one pass rugby??

Hi Geraint, great question! I will try and make a video explaining it in the next week. For the large part, the Forward numbers are interchangeable. You can have any forwards wide/in the center. I've seen some teams play with props out wide to clean up rucks for fast ball and run heavy crash lines against often smaller backs.. It's actually very effective if used correctly.

@@rugbyiq1576Thanks, What i meant was if it started with a lineout on left touchline your 8 and 7 would probably aim to hit the first breakdown (particularly if wider than 12) and then drift after that breakdown to their position on the right. Your two would be a natural player to leave on the left and a 6 is often used but you could use anyone i suppose. Great videos by the way! there is very little information on this kind of thing. I have coached a senior team using a 1 3 3 1 formation which worked but my knowledge base was limited as the information was not that easy to get. For example, i never set any system up inside my own 10-yard line as the more conservative nature of my objectives came into play. I had to fill in the gaps regards to the transition from attack to defence etc These videos are the kind of thing that increases knowledge base.

can you maybe make a video from turnover ball (i know turnover ball is "run ball") but how do you get back to structure from where you where defending and now have to attack

Hi Pucara, 15 or 10 (if he intentionally wannts to swing it) can make the call. Typically the Decision Maker behind the forwards makes the call. Hope this helps!
