You could also use one of the charts that preserve one of the spacial dimensions

That is true, but because all of the charts are 2-dimensional, they cannot preserve all of the dimensions, and thus it is not as intuitive as using the selective histogram.

back in lightroom, you have to crop in to the zone you want to get a read on
