I have been in withdrawal, a kind of despair, ever since Kodachrome 25 & 64 were taken away from me. Thank you so much for offering a way to heal and reconnect with that artistic mode, that special way of communicating! I can't wait to experiment with the LUT 3D module.
That’s why I’m here! Hahaha. One thing that I learned with the LUTS package is that you have to decipher what kind of input the LUT needs. The generic K64 shifts color and adds contrast and saturation. Whereas, the regular K64 doesn’t add saturation but shifts color and adds contrast. I like the regular K64 (and Velvia) LUT now, just you may need to add saturation yourself.
It’s a very long list!! Haha. First thing is the ones labeled “generic” seem to be created by hand whereas ones that do not seem to be created from actual film stocks. The generic ones + Portra 400 add saturation, contrast, and shift color. Whereas the others add contrast, shift color, but do not add Saturation. To use the non-generic ones, add your own saturation (color balance RGB. I’ve had good luck with: Velvia 50 Kodachrome 64 Portra 400 -1 Provia 100F Delta 100 - B&W
I spent years shooting Kodachrome 64 and Ektachrome 100 with a 4x5 camera. While I will take a look at the LUT table module, nothing in the example even remotely reminds me of Kodachrome 64. I watched a video by Boris Hajdukovic who was trying to emulate Kodachrome 64 by matching a picture from an old magazine. He is a color/Darktable master and while his final image looked good it ain't no Kodachrome 64. My gut tells me that what is needed is for our digital cameras to have the LUT profile loaded before we take the picture rather than trying to "correct" something post. I am surprised that some camera company hasn't already come up with such a feature.
The trick with the LUT module is to figure out what kind of input it needs. Some LUTS just shift color/tone, whereas some will also add saturation. Also pulling the strength back to 40-50% helps a lot too. Enjoy!!
Hi..... thank you for this vid and the link. Wow a whole new world of editing has arrived on my pc. Ive already found a super polaroid LUT that is just the ticket for my recent holiday images. Very grateful. Thank you. 🙂👊😎📷👍
@@Giles29 I saw that too! I wish they also made a Velvia 50 preset haha. It’s a great 3rd option to play with and see what works. It’s also scene referred. Enjoy mate!
Hey thanks so much! Thanks for telling me it’s helping you. Haha LUTS are the least of it. Sigmoid is the best module in DT IMHO. Gives you the consistency of LR + you get the power of DT.
Awesome video and explanation! I'm new to Darktable and came across your series to get familiarized with the programm after leaving the Adobe universe. I tried to download the LUTs but unfortunately the link does not work. Any suggestions where I could get them alternatively?
I’ve seen this request twice now, maybe I should research this haha. Thank you for the input! I don’t do a lot of orange/teal, but I bet you can get here in 2 ways: 1) Color Zones or Color Equalizer - shift hue curve 2) Color Balance RGB 4 Ways tab - color grade towards orange/teal
Ahh yes! Search for Aurelian Pierre’s video on Portra 400 for details, but you can use multiple instances of diffuse or sharpen (blue + red channel) to create the purple halation that comes from analog film You can then of course add film grain as well
Hahaha! It was news to me when I opened the color lookup table for the first time and I was giddy with Joy. The external LUTS are really good you just gotta decipher what kind of input they need. For example some only contrast and color tonality but don’t add saturation. So you can add customization saturation before it hits the LUT
i tried to use these, but they dont show up when i click the folder icon. I click show all files but it always says invalid. Anyone lese have this issue?
Hey mate! You have to go into your DT preferences (cog wheel button) and change the default folder for the LUTs to where you out all your LUTs. It should work then!
It is possible to make and add your own presets. The only thing is I can’t find any other presets for say other films like Kodak films etc…. It can also be used mimic the color shifts of a camera profile if you have a color checker. Hope this helps! ✌️
Ha. I’m not sure what you mean by convert? Film emulation convert? Haha. I think I get it. If you want Velvia 50 or Portra 400 then shoot the real thing yes? It’s funny cause I actually did that this weekend and am awaiting results from the lab. Cheers to not having immediate feedback 🍻
When I DLd it I struggled too. Super annoying, proly should have mentioned it in video. I had to use a different browser because my browser (Brave) was actually blocking it. I think it was chrome in Incognito mode that did the trick. Let me know if that works for you.
I had issues DLing em too at beginning too. The files are very safe. Try a different browser and/or if your in Chrome, try using incognito mode. I think that’s what worked for me. Your definitely not the first to experience trouble DLing em.

You showed 2 classics. Which are the 5 greatest in your opinion (it's a long list).

Didn't know Rawtherapee have such amazing LUT. Time the experiment for the FILM EMULATION SPECIAL EFFECTS

The new color equalizer has a preset that could be a starting point for Kodachrome colors
