- Ulysses is a modernist novel by Irish writer James Joyce. It was first serialized in parts in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920 and then published in its entirety in Paris by Sylvia Beach on 2 February 1922, Joyce's 40th birthday. It is considered one of the most important works of modernist literature and has been called "a demonstration and summation of the entire movement." According to Declan Kiberd, "Before Joyce, no writer of fiction had so foregrounded the process of thinking".

Totally enjoyable experience watching this marvellous video. I could retrace my steps with delight in the Dublin where I lived in 2006/07, and enjoyed very much. As I lived in Monkstown, my first visit was to the Martello museum in Sandycove. I loved the presentation of the story, Thank you so much.
I will watch this again on 16th June 2023.

I grew up in Dublin and this is such a beautiful portrayal of the city and Joyce's Ulysses. Thank you so much for doing this! It is such a lovely treat to find - especially on Bloomsday. Who is the person giving the tour? He should give tours! I want to take one next time I am home.

I respectfully correct one assertion; not only Ireland, but add also India as a country who has never persecuted its Jews. Miss jenny
But just as Mr Deasy was speaking in 1904 Limerick was persecuting its Jews in the Limerick pogrom, led by a Redemptorist priest. It went on from 1904-1906.

@@AuthorDocumentaries I don't mean to be overcritical but with my hearing and the sound on the video I miss a lot of it . Otherwise I was enjoying it and learning things which were new to me .So thank you for that.

the presentation would have been much better only hearing the voice of the narrator, the narrator himself staing outside the scene.
This video is also a fantastic time capsule of 2007: you can witness the reality of Dublin city life before smartphones took over everyone’s attention. Here, passersby are walking without phones in front of them. They're looking ahead. If they have a phone, they’re speaking into it via call. Thank you for capturing.

Thankfully things evolve. I remember my first Dublin visit in the early '70s discovering many of the spots portraide here, as well as the shock that you couldn t find or buy a book by Joyce !
The audible readings from text were awful.

maybe someday i will try ulysses again with this explanation in mind but ive never made it in the past

Really shocking that so many Joycean sites in Dublin have fallen into such disrepair. You'd think the city would absolutely cash in on such places and keep them well-maintained.

This was wonderfully engaging and informative. Always something new with every discussion. But I have to say that the reading/narration was the most toneless I have ever heard. It felt like the reader was just reading words that he didn't understand. Just awful. However, the film is still a triumph. Thank you.

It should also be kept in mind that the cyclops in the Odyssey was named Polyphemus, which means "many voiced", hence the many literary voices and styles in the Cyclops episode.
I would have enjoyed this more had you presented the audio here in MONO as opposed to the default to STEREO and have one channel work at a time. That is so distracting that I really feel sorry for the people who worked on this.
Pity you are unable to find a more appropriate thumbnail photo to the name of the item "Dublin...." as the one shown is of James and Nora taken outside the registry office the day they were married in London 1931!
A splendid presentation. I am very interested in content about Ulysses’s, but not in reading the book.

I reckon in 2006/2007 when I lived in Dublin myself. I noticed a pizzaria that I used to go to, the sign for sale on it, at the corner of Parliament St and Dame St, it was on the video and has long since gone. The building opposite had posters of all Irish writers at the windows, gone as well....I too wish they had put the date of filming at the end of the film.
@@lisejacquelinerigault2575 awesome. Thanks for that. I remember doing a walking tour in 2006 but it's a pity he didn't do any walking. The lockdown was the perfect time to do a proper walking tour with no obstacles.
