  • We often get asked questions by our viewers -- and (although we can't answer them all) we do our best to answer them, either by commenting to the questions directly, firing off a quick email, or using the question as a topic for a video.
    In the last couple of months, we've had several people ask about the health risks associated with electric car ownership, specifically the risks associated with electromagnetic radiation from the car's power electronics and motors.
    To put those fears to bed, we decided to make this video explaining why you shouldn't be worried at all.

    yep, the biggest radiation hazard comes through the window. Very well explained. The commutating frequency of an EV motor is low. At 20,000 rpm, i.e. screaming, the motor is revolving at 333 revs per second. multiply by the number of poles, as a example, 6, you have a switching frequency of 2 kHz. This is audio frequencies and off the top of my head quick estimate, a wavelength of 160 km (100 mile).
    cheers

    • @levenkay4468
      @levenkay4468 5 років тому +2

      There aren't any commutators in EV motors (not the ones from major manufacturers, anyway), and I suspect the switching frequencies are way higher than 2kHz, because the motor drives use PWM techniques to synthesize arbitrary voltages.

    it's also worth mentioning inverse square law. The same reason why a mobile phone torch doesn't illuminate things couple feet away as much as it does an inch away. All energy, magnetic, electromagnetic - etc - works the same way. In other words, you'd have to sit on a very very very powerful motor all the time to have a slightest hint of an issue - if, even - and in an electric car you're always a foot or so away from such sources - and usually behind couple sheets of metal. So a faraday cage applies here too.
    It's also worth noting that "regular" cars transfer large amounts of energy from the alternator to the battery and around to lights, sound system, etc.

      Is it "FUD" if it comes directly from an EV manufacturer? The LEAF manual suggests that implanted medical devices in the vacinity of a charging LEAF could result in "injury or death". At least this warning was in the manuals for our 2012 and 2015 LEAF.

    I was listening to a teacher from McGill, teaching about radiowaves and said that there is NO long term studies about the effects and there were certainly some, some people would be sensitive to wi-fi and most extreme cases, cellular tower, having disiness, headache. He also mentioned that for EV cars, there is a warning if you do have a pacemaker or other devices. some people also complained that knee replacement was super hot after their ride in their electric car. there is definitely something here but for most of the population, there are no worries to have.

    Electric motors use rotating magnet fields and not radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic radiation to create a torque on a rotating shaft. The torque comes from interactions between 2 magnetic fields. Magnetic fields are generated by electrons flowing such as a current in a wire configured in a coil to concentrate the magnetic field flux density. Electromagnetic radiation is not the same phenomenon as magnetic fields although they are related in that electromagnetic radiation such as RF for TV requires magnetic and electric fields to sustain the radiation (transmission). Magnetic fields in electric motors use lower frequencies than RF for TV. Another way of looking at this is that magnetic fields in electric motors exploit near-field effects whereas radio transmitters exploit far-field effects.
    It is true to say that electrical equipment in general produces undesirable RF electromagnetic radiation due to electrons moving (kHz to GHz) and manufacturers try to minimise this RF to pass EMI (electromagnetic interference) testing. Therefore, use of an electric motor with its power electronics can generate RF as an unwanted side-effect.

    How does a petrol car compare to ev car with radiation?

  • @mr88cet
    @mr88cet 5 років тому +3

    Good topic!
    Yeah, it’s all about frequency or wavelength of the “radiation.” The frequency of the PWM (pulse-width modulation) from the inverters that form the monster sinewaves that drive EV motors can go as high as a few tens of kilohertz - 10^5 Hz at the most.
    However, even then, we have to remember that that’s only the “fundamental” frequency, and the inverter will produce some reasonably-powerful harmonics.
    Still, the lowest frequency of ionizing radiation - radiation that can affect chemical bonds, which is UVA - is at nearly 10^15 Hz, more than a billion times that frequency!
    The amount of radiation an inverter will put out on its billionth harmonic ... well, let’s just say “it brings new meaning to the word ‘negligible’”!
    Even then, you have the inverse-square law, wherein the intensity of EM radiation falls off with square of the distance from the source: so, increase your distance from the inverter and motor by a little over three times, and the intensity of the radiation goes down by a factor of ten, ten times the distance and it goes down by 100, etc. So it’s not nearly powerful enough, sitting in the car seats, to induce currents in electronics. If it could, then the car’s own computers and other electronics would fail.

    I wonder if EVs are more likely to explode on impact than gas-powered cars. I’ve read of several EVs in crashes where the occupants burned to death. UA-cam clips testing durability of individual electric fuel cells showed them to be very stable when knocked about, but very explosive when penetrated.

I reminded him that as train drivers we sit a few feet away from an alternator the size of a small car and sit directly over huge traction motors which require 25000 volts at up to 7000 amps to operate. "Not the same thing," he replied.

    I would be more worried about the cell phone transmitters that you hold right next to your brain. Since field strength reduces by the square of the distance, I like to use speaker mode since even being several inches away is significantly better than touching your head.
    For EV's I think all the metal chassis between you and the motors/batteries would provide significant shielding. Im glad to see that a study was done just to make sure.

      @@bobcoco6047 Two details, though: Neuralink might help transhumanists but it is not a transhumanist project.
      The goal on Tranhumanists is to abolish death. The goal of Neuralink is to merge people with AI (i.e. control AI the way the "reptilian brain" controls the cortex) to save us from ending as AIs pets. Musk said publicly several times he wanted to die on Mars.
      Another thing, 5G is short range and does not make any sense on a satellite. I believe their signals are also targeted at the receivers to both save energy and enable higher bandwidth.
      On top of that Lopez is just a senseless angry man. Starlink satellites are brightest just after launch. Although they missed this, initially, SpaceX updated their satellites to make them as stealthy as possible and their latest version is about as good as invisible, once they reach their orbit. There are around 900 (with a launch every few weeks) of them in the sky now, I believe but I don't hear about any new complaint.

      If I remember correctly, the phone doesn't give you a shock but builds up a charge in your body. That charge could travel through the nozzle when it touches the car. Since gasoline vehicles work by igniting fumes with a spark, I'm sure you can see why that is an issue.

    The only _'danger'_ posed by the proposed general adoption of electric vehicles is that the _de facto_ standard of a modern world powered solely by fossil fuels may be dispelled, erasing forever the concept of _'Black Gold',_ Petroleum, being a path to financial stability or economic control worldwide. After all, economists were assured for the better part of the past 45 years by experts out of Detroit, Frankfurt, and Tokyo that EV technology _'just wasn't quite there yet',_ probably would not reach viability for 50 to 100 years, and in all likelihood was impossible to achieve. The existence of Tesla also challenges accepted, common ideas that insist advertising is a necessary expense, that _'Independent Franchised Dealerships'_ are the sole viable means of Distribution and Sales of New automobiles, that labor unions such as the Teamsters and UAW are mandatory millstones for corporate manufacturers to bear, or that ICE powered by fossil fuels is the only safe, affordable, reliable means of transportation in the world. Thus, is it any way wonder that for over a decade there has been a constant, concentrated, focused campaign to portray EVs as inferior, unsafe, expensive, and incapable compared to their ICE driven forbears by newsmedia companies in print, radio, and television that are largely supported by funding from advertising paid for by petroleum companies, and traditional conventional legacy ICE automobile manufacturers and their dealership networks? Don't be a pawn of Petroleum companies. Decide for yourself, based on the evidence available. Sure, it is often argued that EVs simply _'cost too much'._ Perhaps. Notice how in 1990, the average sale price for a new vehicle sold in th U.S. was $15,000. Today that amount is $38,000. Yes, for several years, the Nissan VERSA was the best selling, cheap, ICE based car in the U.S. at around $12,000 MSRP and it was greatly outsold year after year by the BMW 3-Series, which sold for at least $34,000. Today, both are outsold by the Tesla Model 3, in the U.S. Combined. Collectively. In Consecutive years going back to 2018. Being based upon ICE does not automatically guarantee low price or high sales. Those who suggest otherwise are entirely ignoring the facts and evidence to the contrary.
    Similarly, the Tesla Model S has outsold many of its direct competitors among large, luxury, flagship Sedans since 2013. Again, its market dominance has been largely combined, collective, and consistently consecutive, despite repeated claims that Model S sales were being cannibalized by Model 3 sales in recent years. Oh, and the direct ICE competitors to Model S, in top trim, all cost more than the top-of-the-line Model S in its top Performance trim. So no salvation for ICE in that realm either. Even newcomers, praised for their size, power, handling, styling, and price point, among entry level luxury cars, such as the GENESIS G70, KIA STINGER, and Alfa Romeo Giulia, all ICE powered, failed to impress buyers in large numbers, despite their strict adherence to the precepts of tradition, convention, ritual, and legacy. Even with their use of _'Independent Franchised Dealerships',_ and advertising campaigns that were rather widespread, none of them came close to the sales of the Model 3. The term _'Diminishing Returns'_ comes to mind, along with _'Throwing Good Money After Bad'._ Even a rousing endorsement by Emerson Fittipaldi failed to garner results for KIA's entry. Each of them was simply _'Too Little, Too Late',_ a fate I believe, will befall the Ford Mach-E and Ford F-150 Lightning as well, though I actually like each of those.
    FUD -- Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt, have been fundamental in spreading potential, and inaccurate, propaganda against EVs. Concentration on the multitude of supposed 'problems' that presumably have not and cannot be addressed by EV Proponents, such as myself. For decades, I heard them say, "Until EVs have a 200 mile range, minimum, they'll NEVER be a viable source of transportation for the average person." Yet, when 200+ mile range appeared, nine years ago, suddenly the argument became '400 mile range, minimum' despite the fact that numerous performance oriented modern ICE vehicles, sometimes costing multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars, were incapable of a 300 mile range, even using gasoline. The excuse offered for that was that such performance cars 'were not meant to be grand tourers' and that 'most people rarely drive in excess of 40 miles per day, anyway'. So, assuming that's the case, why the minimum necessity for five days' worth of range? I used to think that was because, roughly 45 years or so ago, most cars were essentially gas guzzlers. So, a car with a 19 gallon fuel tank that got perhaps 12 miles per gallon had a maximum range of maybe 228 miles on a good day. Back then, there were no 'low fuel' idiot lights on the dashboard of American gas guzzling behemoths, so when the shadow of the bouncing needle of the fuel indicator/guess-o-meter glanced against 'E' on the fuel gauge, that was it, you had a walk ahead of you to get more fuel, because the car stopped, cold. There were no cell phones either, so no easy way to contact roadside assistance was available. You might be lucky enough to be nearby an operational roadside Call Box, but that could be expensive. Not that stopping at any of the Last Chance GAS! stations that used to dot the open highway in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas were particularly inexpensive, as they charged ridiculously expensive amounts per gallon, mercenary rates, just to fill up, for a ride, or tow. If your car only got 5-to-8 MPG, it was even worse, as your effective range was diminished even with a 25 gallon tank. Because of this, people routinely stopped to fill up at anything below 1/4 or 1/2 tank remaining, and really had no idea of the actual range of their cars. People who remember those days typically misjudge their needed range requirements for daily driving and mistakenly run out of gas all the time today, thinking, _"I just put five bucks in it",_ forgetting entirely that it has been a LONG time since Regular gasoline cost less than $0.75 per gallon. Dude, your circa 1978 El Camino is a gas guzzler, five bucks barely buys two gallons now, you were lucky to make it home. Of course you ran out of gas. Learn to count. Numbers won't kill you. I once had a Girlfriend, eight years older than I was, who was in the habit of similarly thinking _'five bucks'_ was a substantial amount of fuel. It was extremely difficult to convince her to read the amount of gallons she added at the pump instead of the total price she paid as a metric.

      People worry because of the unknown. Science thinks it can provide the answers -- and we look to it for that -- but Science only knows what lies within the limits of its knowledge. I assume you became a scientist because you wanted to understand things that have yet to be discovered and explained? This is great! But please understand that people are different: not only in how their minds react (for reassurance) but also in how their bodies react -- for instance, to electromagnetic radiation: some of us burn in the sun more than others.

    • @doritoification
      @doritoification 5 років тому +1

      @@michaelcarter2169 yeah but science also explains how ultraviolet radiation causes those sun burns due to its high energy and ability to knock electrons off atoms. There is no ionizing radiation being produced by an alternating current in a coil pushing magnets to propel an electric car. Nor do the LTE networks run on ionizing radiation. It's blindingly obvious that internal combustion engine car pollution is harmful though, and yet we understand it and are used to it so we seem to not care as much.

They are not considering the sub-clinical damage that is being done that will not be obviously observable or measurable for perhaps years. That is like having a person chew tobacco to see if any significant damage is being done to the body by one session of chewing it and than declaring it safe. A perfect example of this is how when cigarette smoking was declared to be bad for your health and could cause cancer by the Surgeon General this was entirely from observation of linkage, not from scientific study, which shows you clearly scientific studies are generally poorly constructed due to departmentalization and myopic thinking and leaving out many vital factors. If you are not an authority in biophysics, than you have no business declaring any type of radiation emitting technology safe to people or biology period!

    Remember it took a little over one hundred years to realise that burning fossil fuel is hazardous to health , and its not going without a fight .
    In the not so distant future electric vehicles will be the norm with several million vehicles being sold world wide each year .
    Imagine years from now , cities that suffer grid lock will there be a spike in radiation levels due to all the electric vehicles
    Could it be that one hundred years from now we find that maybe electric vehicles are a hazard to health also .

Throughout history people were quick to claim safety but ended completely wrong. We need to take everything with a grain of salt. I don't know about other people but whenever I sit in an electric car or any type of car matter of fact, I feel dizzy, nauseous and lose strength. It's as if I can physically feel the electromagnetic frequencies. Maybe it's just me or I am just super sensitive. But one thing I know is that my body does not lie. I guess only time will tell to reveal the truth.

    I don't think you are a physicist or engineer, so you are to be forgiven. Here's a case of something that sounds like what it is, is NOT. Electromagnetic radiation is changing magnetic and Electric field. It is not the result of the field caused by an electromagnet. An electromagnet produces a magnetic field (same as a bar magnet) unless it is produced by an alternating current, in which case it produces a MAGNETIC field which changes strength and direction. So strangely, an electromagnet only produces a magnetic filed, not a field of electromagnetic radiation.

    You are unknowingly completely off topic. At low power, the danger with magnetic and electromagnetic fields have no link with their ionization ability whatsoever. We can live with them no problem. In fact, the Earth natural magnetic field is significant and harmless. But constant.
    The thing is, every change in the electromagnetic fields require a small adaptation from living organisms. Very small, but an adaptation nonetheless. As all adaptation, this means stress. Small adaptation, small stress. Every change means an adaptation, making high frequency change more stressful for the body.
    For anyone healthy enough, this usually poses little to no problem. A bit like toxic foods, pesticides, air and water pollution, social stress, overworking, lack of sleep, malnutrition (very common in rich countries by lack of micronutrients), and so on and so forth. The problem is, many people accumulate a lot of these small or not so small stresses, and over the years, at some point, the organism cannot cope anymore and start showing symptoms. Over this, as in all things, some people are much more resilient, others much more sensitive than others.
    Thankfully, as I understand it, electronics are sensitive to these changes too, and so, they are shielded. Usually, many electronics are between the passengers and the motor, which makes modern cars, even electric ones, less of a problem than older ones. The batteries seem to sometimes be a problem, though. And for the most sensitive, there is still the wifi, bluetooth and other 4G connections.
    Among the usual symptoms, you can find headaches, nausea, tiredness, dizziness, confusion and difficulty to concentrate, depression, infertility. Usually not all at once, and some more prominent with certain bandwith, like the compact fuorescent light and to a lesser extent, the electronics in some LED lamps are prone to generate headaches, while wifi is known to cause masculine infertility. Most things the average physician will call of psychological origin after making their patient go through many useless, pricey, time consuming and sometime invasive medical tests.
    I used to constantly suffer from most of these in my apartment, for years, believing them to be of psychological origin. And then got to sleep someplace isolated enough from them and got more or less cured overnight. And got sick again the first hour I was back in my home. These threats are real.
    Note that ICE cars also deploy strong changing fields through alternators and spark plugs.

      Florestan Trément Right at the beginning you make an assertion that every change in the field requires an adaptation. Why? What kind of adaptation? How does the cell detect the change? What’s happening on a physical level? I suspect that at the levels talked about in this video the cells in your body are blissfully unaware that the fields exist, changes or not.

      Electromgnetic fields ARE changing magnetic fields (and electric fields) - they reverse polarity on each cycle - it's simply a matter of how quickly they change polarity.
      Until they change polarity around 10 raised to the power 17 times per second, they present no significant danger to human health

      @@jimmurphy5355 In a way, you are right, I don't know the detail of the adaptations, and this is only part of a theory. As the theory of relativity is just a theory. "My" theory entails cutting edge chemistry, quantum physics and another field, I don't remember which, I suppose related to electromagnetism. And I don't have enough knowledge in these fields to explain it. But as all theories, this one is grounded in two ways. First it roots in the law of hormesis, which implies every aggression that doesn't actually hurt the body is met with an adaptation, and has a threshold past which it fails and has to compensate in a more damaging way. And the second base is the experience of so many people, including mine. Sure many that claim to be electrosensitive are hypochondriac, as it is such an easy way to feel hurt, but this sickness comes with other symptoms, many electrosensitives lack. Especially those that didn't know what they were suffering from until accidentally and momentarily getting cured of their symptoms, like I did. Of course, you can be both electrosensitive and hypochondriac. Unsolved sickness breeds more sickness.
      Few people in the scientific world understand how it works, because of the specialist knowledge it requires. The one specialist I know about is Marc Henry, conferences from which videos are available in French. His field of study is water.
      One of the effects of these fields are related to the simple, and widely known, fact that H₂O molecules act as magnet, for all intents and purposes. This makes them sensitive magnetic fields. The chemistry of the body also relies heavily on ions, which are charged particles, which are sensitive to electric fields. If the body want them to act in a predictable manner, it has to adapt itself in some way every time their behavior changes. I have no idea how, but it seems reasonable to me.

    • @bobcoco6047
      @bobcoco6047 3 роки тому

      @@parajacks4 The answer is in the links, yet indeed my direct reply wasn't on target.
      Non ionising radiations won't "only warm your skin", actually in most cases, it doesn't, due to low power.
      The fundamental misconception hinges precisely on the premise the only harm radiations could do to us, is heat. All the bro-science studies from the national/global institutions (WHO, FDA, FTC, FCC, NIH, ICNIRP, you name it) are based on this assumption, therefore they only look for heat effects, find nothing, then conclude it's harmless, & everyone happily believes them.
      The DAS standard has been built on that same idea, the "biological" tests were applied to a plastic dummy, for 15min, supervised by engineers, aka not biologists. Is it enough for you? That's what we call pseudo-science, or a SCAM.
      All these organizations have conflicts of interests with telecom companies, lobbies, & some of those planning the 5G + IA + Transhumanism agenda today (but nothing new, it's been long time we have evidences).
      So, the 1st major point is, stop looking for thermal effects, they're the least important. The effects we're talking about here, are long term (depending on ppl's body, think of it like a battery/reserve of resistance).
      They imply cancer (any type, depending on the exposition/location; easy to remember expl: ladies with breast tumors exactly at the emplacement of their cellphone... Between their tits), immunodeficiency, unplanned avortions, cognitive deterioration, weird changes in behaviors (animals mainly), chronic pains (notably headaches), chronic oxidative stress, chronic fatigue, anxiety, early aging, infertility, & some + ...
      The way it affects us is through magnetic field going all across the body (where the electric field only goes on the skin), & makes random damages to biological/metabolic/biochemical processes. & there are lots of, at various frequencies. For instance, some ions rotates & oscillates at specific frequencies, such as 55hz for the magnesium one; if the frequency of the artificial EMF is close enough, you get some resonance effect (diapason) which prevents the biochemical reactions to occur as they should, inducing a chain of dysfunction. This is why some ppl freak out with WiGig & 5G, targeting the frequency of Oxygen absorption.
      www.imec-int.com/cache/pdfs/en/imec-magazine/imec-magazine-april-2017/60ghz-technology-for-wigig-and-5g-applications.pdf
      ua-cam.com/video/XvYwBGUevPw/v-deo.html : The 60 Gigahertz And WiGiG Reality #JOEIMBRIANO ; The Fullertone Informer
      Last point I'll make, is EMF are usually characterized by power (Watt) / flux (W/m²) / Voltage (V) / Frequency (hz), so that some common arguments such as "the Sun beams xxGhz frequencies, at xxxV/m², which is much higher than your phone, → it's stoopid believing the phone is harmful", which again, relies on the same type of fallacy as the 1st point: harm doesn't only hinge on power. It happens the PULSED character of artificial EMFs, are a major point making them harmful, for expl.
      So I encourage you to dig a bit further, bc it might be determinant in the current circumstances.
