I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this-maybe read it somewhere but forgot. This cool video helps introduce or re-introduce me to this gaming oddity! Yeah, SEGA has great IP, and did great things with the Arcade in the 80’s. I can see how that 1989-1990 period, to be exciting with the Genesis I wonder if Phantasy Star had anything to do with online, back with the SMS. Good observation about Diablo as a current example. Kinda bizarre about the gambling and horse races 🐴 and all lol
You know I don't know was Phantasy Star online "in" the arcade at all? I thought that was mostly a console marketed MMO for the most part? Honestly though diablo came to mind since I've been playing a ton of D4 lately lol and the horse racing....I dunno its a thing in Japan they have always been crazy for it at least it seems that way! Thanks for swinging by Thumb!
@@geekstorian no problem-I enjoy your videos when I can find the time. I also like how you brand the videos, so I know I have others to catch, when I can. With the Phantasy Star, I kinda made offhand, that yeah, I don’t believe it was Arcade, but it was SMS console. I just brought it up cause I know SEGA was trying to do something there back in the day, with having multiplayer RPGs
Yeah, Sega really did innovate a lot in the arcade in the 80s, and that goes back to the 70s even. In fact other companies sometimes made big money by just copying Sega's best games. Atari made "Dodge 'em", a clone of Sega's "Head On" (1979), and Activision copied both "Turbo" (see "Enduro") and "Astro Blaster" (see "Megamania").
Some channels teach you about a game, others about hardware. This is the only channel you can go to for the Infrastructure behind the retro hardware lol.
Can you an do Gaming Oddities episode of the Nintendo 3D1 Joystick? It was a joystickk for Windows 95 produced for Nintendo and manufactured by Laral Group in 1997. The design of the Joystick itself is greatly inspired by the Nintendo 64 and its controller since it was Nintendo's relevant home console at the time. It also bears the logo of said Nintendo 64 despite not being compatible with the system itself and can't be used with a Nintendo 64 game console. It became an official licensed product.
Hahaha I love how horse racing is slowly becoming a recurring theme on your channel 😂 I'm not really sure where the Sega ALLS... system?... would fall into this. Maybe just a moment in history?
ALLS is used on a bunch of rhythm games. Ongeki (8 games), MaiMai (at least 3 or 4), WACCA (sadly defunct now.....didn't even really get off the ground, THANKS COVID.....it launched early 2020 and has already been shut down.).
Yeah covid did anumber on a lot of things :(. Tha ks for sharing all this i had no idea if was used on this many rhythm games! Also thanks for swining by in general much appreciated!
Sad arcades are dying over there. Hey Nick what are your thoughts on Diablo 4, since you mentioned it? I’m happy with it. Can’t say the same with Diablo 3 at the time cast improvement imo.
Yeah its the end of an era and as to my thoughts on diablo im conflicted. Parts of it i love and parts of it i find annoying since your farming a lot more gear to pull things off of it and put more gear in and a lot of missions feel very much the same. The story is amazing 10/10 but the end game is good AND bad overall worth playing for sure! Also awesome to see you btw!
@@geekstorian well if part 3 tells us anything it should go uphill over time. I think it’s impressive for a vanilla build. Keep in mind Elden Ring recycles things and is still excellent. I think that’s more an open world issue than Diablo exactly issue ya know? Like we do need to evaluate what does or doesn’t benefit that design.
Part of what you have to keep in mind with some of this stuff is japanese culture to. They dont always have consoles in theor place and they grew up and offen prefer public arcades to home console gaming. Not that they dont do that they biy plenty of them but this kind of thing leans into their love of arcade and want of a larger community. In particular the horse racing lets them compete with multiple other arcades and harkens back to their love of horse recing and gambling on it like the games used for the tenkey pads on the famicom and super famicom.
..not completly relevant..but players used to gather around when, and encouraged, grow when you arcade well..also,gambling is not realy gaming..get good,or you not good..not just luck,no hack..just good..
Yeah, well that was more back in the hay day of the arcade when people would gather around to watch each other play and point coins down to see who got next. Now we just go online from our couch and get some matches. Also yeah gambling isn't a good hobby but Japan seems to really love it and I suppose if your just doing it to get tickets or tokens for prizes its no worse than half the games like that in a Dave and Busters in the states.
@@geekstorian Firstly we cannot change it,and secondly..fuckit.!..I loved my games and knew I played them with love, dedication and much gusto.!..yet,sadly,there they must stay.a happy memory..and thirdly..know how many times I tried to fix my digital joystick with pratley.?
Being a sega fan, this was fascinating.
Hey graphic god good to see uou glad you liked this one!

I'll look into that one :)
I was geeking out over this. Japan for sure is ahead of the game
Yeah it was a wild idea and a cool way to kove things foreard even if the arcade scene appears to be dying.

Its totaly unintentional it just KEEPS coming up. I turn around and Japans doing horse racing...AGAIN! I'm like ok ..you do you japan lol.

If Sega made a jet fighter simulator for the US air force there PC technology would be powerful enough for the program to run
Nice! I didn't know that thanks for sharing that! I may have to do some more digging into that one :)

If you're just going to play against people over the Internet, then why bother going to the arcade?
