Love your video. Saw my first Tarantula here in Penrose, migrating to find a female, Texas Brown Tarantula!. I have a video of him on my channel. It was the only one crossing the road, and we just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Amazing!. Thank you for sharing and introducing all the information that you share. It means a Lot to me and I know many are thankful as well. I have been telling everyone that the Tarantulas are not that bad, it's just misinformation that they're getting. The Carolina Wolf Spiders to me are more scarier than the Tarantulas...this is just my opinion. Hope you enjoy your new pets and have a Wonderful weekend...also stay safe on your trip as well.❤😊🤩🤗🕸🕷🕸🤗🤩😊❤👋
In South Africa we call them Shongololo's as well. As kids we played with them all the time. It's amazing that you work with all the big spiders but the Shongololo's freak you out. For me it would definately be the other way around.
Same! As a kid these were my favourite critters. I used to play with them all time. I kiss them. I would absolutely love to keep them as pets but living in New Zealand makes that pretty difficult 😢
Wow I never thought I'd see you squirm or say "ew" at any bug 😂 I've always LOVED millipedes and thought they were the cutest. I played with them all the time as a kid and called them my little friends. I'd love some giant ones 🥰
I've kept 3 of these for the last year in the UK. Firstly, wow they cost a lot over there, $150? I paid £13 for each one from the spider shop UK! Try feeding them cucumber, they go mad for it 😋 They poop when scared as well so pick them up gently and have tissues ready 😂 One of mine has just come out after being buried for 10 months so don't get worried If they disappear. Lastly they need rotting white hardwood in their diet as well as calcium, you can chuck in a cuttlefish or crush up eggs shells and sprinkle them around. Also good to have some branches/sticks for them to climb up. Enjoy, they are fascinating to watch ❤
That’s so cool, I’ve been thinking about getting one for a few months but have been so indecisive. Are they easy setup wise? I’ve heard a lot of people say they need specialised heating? Also the site you got yours from, was it pretty good service wise? But I agree they are incredible looking
I had a Smokey oak millipede that I paid really cheap for, like 20 bucks or less, and I just bought an American giant millipede for only 15 bucks! I had no idea that the African giant millipedes were super expensive lol
I had a Smokey oak millipede that I paid really cheap for, like 20 bucks or less, and I just bought an American giant millipede for only 15 bucks! I had no idea that the African giant millipedes were super expensive lol
@@azzabazza3729 I got mine from the spider shop, a UK website. Setup is easy, you can get a millipede substrate which contains all the goodness they need, some decaying white wood, oak leaves, branches etc. I have a small heat mat placed halfway up the back of the tank so they have a warm area but no need for specialist heating like lamps or anything. I add crushed up egg shells for calcium and put a bit of fish flake food on the cucumber I feed them for protein. Keep them damp but not soggy.
Very nice! Some things I want to add is that they need a much much bigger enclosure, about as big as the millipede is length wise so they have enough substrate to burrow in. As for substrate, millipedes are detrivores- meaning they feed on decaying matter, so make sure substrate has at least rotting wood and leaf litter (I believe there’s a certain ratio of rotting wood to leaf litter, but I cannot remember) Another thing to keep in mind is that you don’t want the substrate to be too dry or too wet (that’s when temperature and humidity gauges come in handy) too dry and the millipede can dry out (that’s what happened to mine, unfortunately.) too wet and they can start to experience leg rot which is quite literally where their legs rot away from too much moisture :( As for Coco Fiber, I wouldn’t even risk it. Impaction can be fatal, so why risk the loss of a loved one, ya know? I hope none of this comes off as rude, I know you “specialize” in spiders mainly so it’s a learning experience with these creatures.
I live in South Africa and my friend and I ride our horses in a nature reserve. I’m always the one at the back shouting at her not to let her horse step on these guys because they’re absolutely everywhere 😂
That kid is in the perfect “I’m losing all my teeth and excited about everything” stage and I adore him. He’s so happy to share what he knows. I love when kids share so much like that.
Same, I think because it reminds me of my child self being obsessed with weird animals and always wanting to educate people about them. I’m studying zoology in college now so go figure 😂
You crack me up. I love your reactions in your videos. You are knowledgeable and clearly love your pets but you don't try to play big and bad. Very cute video. And so respectful. ❤
My daughter got to hold one at the butterfly house here in StL a few yrs back! The guy that was showing her was SHOCKED she wanted to hold it. She's obsessed with insects. Thanks for doing this video!! She's gonna love this
I have a giant african millipede called Onyx, they are incredible creatures! Mime is incredibly surface active and is yet to burrow! He is very confident as well! For me coco coir is a no no. Also since I'm in England, mine cost £12!
you would want a bigger tub for the a. gigas as they shouldn't be able to wrap around the sides as well as the substrate should be as deep as theyre long and im not sure about reptisoil but getting a cheap bag of topsoil is a lot better then anything made for reptiles by big companies
I had one of these back in 2006 when you could still buy them from Petco for 15 bucks. It was such a fun animal, but mine died unfortunately. I've been looking forward to getting another one. I absolutely love the way their feet feel It's like having a hairbrush give you a hug
I brought a millipede home from the science expo in 5th grade and my mom was PISSED 😂 Gave it to my science teacher at the end of the year because of the stank 😅
The substratet for millipedes must be a mixture of rotten wood in fine crumbs, old oak and beech leaves, you can use a little peet, but only a little. You must never use coconut fibers for millipedes. The substrate must be moist but never wet, the primary food for your Gigas millipede is their substrate, so it is important to have lots of rotten wood, leaves and some lime in the substrate. Good luck with your beautiful millipede. Kind regards Christina from Denmark.
In Puerto Rico we call the milipedes (red ones) and we call them gongolíes (plural) /gongolí (singular). I remember finding them all over when I was a kid.
I had these decades ago in NYC, and they are the gentlest and coolest! One time I took a nap and woke up with my arms thrown up over my head and a giant millipede starting to uncurl in my hand (I think that was what woke me up) and I thought - did it get out of the tank and crawl over to hang with me?? But once I was wide awake I realized I must have picked it up in my sleep. :D
now those are neat and they are so chill. where as centipedes are still a big nope for me, i think i would enjoy millipedes. Kat is a great mother, you can tell by watching her daughter so comfortable with it all (mr. kat good parent too). Thanks @tarantulakat for another awesome vid.
me and my sister used to love finding little millipedes under rocks and stuff when we were kids, wed love to hold them and play with them. i was afraid of them at first but my sister helped me by calling them 'friends' and from that point forward for YEARS wed call them 'Friends'. didnt even know they were called millipedes till we were both like well into our teen years, when we didnt call them friends we thought they were centipedes lol. but i love these guys so much, tempted to get a big boy friend.

Pretty much sums up why I'm afraid of spiders and centipedes (particularly House Centipedes, those are freaking demons I don't care how many people say they're harmless...they aren't to my mental health!). Milipedes don't freak me out quite as much because their legs aren't as long and undulate-y. I hate that about centipedes...it makes my skin crawl!

I find round millipedes to be super cute, much cuter than centipedes. They have the most adorable alien faces, their legs feel like velcro and move in an endless wave. I'm literally going to receive my African millipede from Tom in a few hours and I'm SO THRILLED to be getting it soon and on Halloween of all days! 🎃🖤🖤 Thank you for these care tips to get me started! I've wanted one of these millipedes for years and I'm relieved to see I have enough to get started holding one of these cuties.
Cool with snakes, cool with jumping spiders, growing to be okay with Wolf spiders… but millipedes?!?! NO! Nope. Uh-uh! Not even a little bit. I would self-immolate if one was even within arms reach of me. 😂I

@@DiamondSupport10 Some places sell rotting wood for feeding milipedes and the like.
i thought the same thing! the enclosure looks too small for 1 giant african, let alone multiple!!
I love that they just secrete cyanide when threatened. So cute, so horrifying.

they are so cute wtf, them drinking water was adorable
This is so awesome. I don't know why but I enjoy seeing kids explain about animals.

The sewing scissors on the box!!! I winced so hard!
This is the cutest video. Your reaction was adorable. "They have scritchy legs!""
I love that she called them scritchy 😂❤
You need to use a millipede specific substrate so that it can eat the plant and other matter in the soil

@mrlazli I'm in the UK- millipede substrate from Bugznbits

The sound of their legs was amazing. ASMR for sure!
I tend to mix all the leaf littler and rotten wood together with the substrate as that’s what they will be eating in the soil
I loveeee giant milli’s. I’ve got a spike tail from Thailand. I felt the same way about its legs to begin with but now they just feel tickly 🥹
Me who sees them everyday finds this a bit baffling🤣🤣 hope you enjoy them💛💛
We also refer to a millipede as a songololo in south africa, interesting. In our yard we have black ones and black with red stripes.
Got mine about a year ago. Such incredible creatures. Handling them is a delight, I love how their little legs feel.
I think the little (or big) guy looks amazing! I am also hesitant to touch my millipedes lol!
Haha, mine arrive this week. I'm hoping I won't be afraid to pick them up! It's the legs...
I looooove millipedes so much

These guys are small potatoes compared to their prehistoric ancestor. Which was over 10 ft long.

That was so cool! So great to see Mo and his son participating. I wish I could get some but I think they’re illegal here in Florida. 😔
After watching your video, I want one, two, three.... now!!! 🙂
I could handle those but the Giant Centipedes freak me out and they also bite.
Sounds about right. Kinda like how certain fish here are native but invasive somewhere else.
We found a giant millipede at work early last month. Was maybe 5"? Was super surprised to see one that big in the States

Do you know anyone on here on tikkytoc or if one of ur other spider friends could put me in touch I will then commit to signing up to join as a Patriot but I just love what you do anyways I know names of the bigger hairier spiders too just by looking at them so I have learnt a lot from you . I have a set up for the sling it’s a 3/3/3 cube with two circles meshed over and another hole with a cork stopper to feed them their fruit flies also and so on and so on blah blah blah . Anyway sorry this was so long prob loads of mistakes also sorry for that and keep doing what ur doing because even tho it makes me itch I love watching you and ur family x take care
