Special thanks to my wife Audrey, and everyone who helped me in any way.
Thank you for watching this video, i really appreciate it. I have a lot of ideas for projects that id love to share here.
also I am joking about automated litter boxes being too expensive. I just wanted an excuse to make one my self, don't come at me. - Наука та технологія

Thanks to Tom Scott for this video recommendation. Such an enjoyable video!
HI MOMMY I'M GOING TO THE BATHROOM.
Fern is a real sweetheart haha!
@@KeithSachs Litter issue get a throw rug, and place by the entrance. Not as grippy and dirt trapping as a Nomad door mat, which the cats might not like to walk over, but it definitely does a good job on removing the litter from the paws.
@SeanBZA we have the specialty matt that is supposedly made specifically for the purpose but fern is just a goblin haha
people who came here because of Tom Scott's weekly letter, like this comment :)
and btw the video was really awesome, loved it! Looking forward to further parts...
are you trying to tell me Tom Scott, the TOM SCOTT watched my video??
@@KeithSachsyes, he recomended you on his weekly mailing list as the first appearance.
im gonna cry i love him@@YouTenaza
@Fluckers to quote him "Well, this channel has that "x factor"."
@@KeithSachs "It's very, very rare that the first video from a new UA-cam creator is good - or, frankly, anything more than embarrassing. Yet, somehow, Keith Sachs has managed it! He's a maker, he's steadily building an automated litter box for his cats, and this is part one of the story. I didn't expect to watch all ten minutes of this, but the storytelling is great, to the point where I suspect Keith has more experience than the otherwise-blank channel would suggest! Yes, it's a bit rough around the edges in places - there's a couple of times where science explanations get a little lost in the weeds, and I'd recommend he pick a stage name that isn't an allusion to profanity, because that feels like the sort of thing that gets awkward when your audience gets larger. But those quibbles aside: this is good! Back before reality TV stole the idiom, "x factor" referred to a certain unknown star quality, something indescribable that made people think "this person has potential". Well, this channel has that "x factor"'. "
This is great, I’m looking forward to the next one!
thanks so much! had a lot of fun making it and im looking forward to the next one too :)
Congrats on what's sure to be a Tom Scott-driven explosion of views, likes, and subscriptions. And a deserved one!
i really appreciate it, i am so grateful for all of you giving me a shot!
Tom Scott didn't just watch your video, man! Here's what he said and why people are here:

Gotta say i agree. This video was engaging and well-paced and I would not have guessed it was your first. Looking forward to see what else you do!
i changed my name at everyones suggestion! should just be Keith Sachs now :) thanks so much for watching and the feedback! I'm trying my best to make the science stuff fun, engaging, and easy to watch. I think it'll just take some practice!
Tom Scott always finds the very best content
thank you so much! im really glad you enjoyed it!
@@KeithSachs I cant wait for part 2! Wish you the best
If you've never injected a puppy with an RFID chip, it's just a quick jab and then hilariously chasing them with the reader to get the number you forgot to write down before you threw the syringe in the bin...
I haven't! It just sounds spooky to inject something into my kitties without a vet
I injected one into my hand about a decade ago for keyless entry into my motorhome, it worked too until it was stolen. The motorhome that is, not my hand.
@@AdamHocking 🤣glad the hand wasnt stolen with it! need the keys after all!
@ metrazol @ Keith Sachs. Not so easy on a kitten. It‘s a big needle, was done in my home by the rescue service to my kitten on the day they brought him, it clearly hurt a lot, and when taken to my vet the following day for own check up for peace of mind, no chip, so not as easy as you make it sound.
i for sure would never trust anyone but a vet to do it to my animals at least @@Rocky-fv9ey
You're already better than your inspiration youtubers by a wide margin.
I think I've still got a lot of learning to do, but i appreciate this a lot, it means so much! ❤
Feels like 'Stuff made here' and I'm definitely up for more such content!
ahh!! thank you so much! Stuff made here is absolutely one of my inspirations, i aspire to be like him one day 😆
As daughter of an engineer, having grown up watching things being created from thin air (!), and cat lover, thought this was great! Can‘t wait to see what you finally come up with. Shocked by revelation that RFID implants are available so freely, but also glad that you don‘t have to keep grabbing a passing cat for your testing!
haha! fern was a good sport about it at least, shes a sweet girl
This is brilliant and charming. I suspect your views will increase very, very quickly (yep, I'm here from Tom's newsletter as well)
alexa - put this on my "this goes hard" playlist
Yet another new subscriber courtesy of Tom Scott's newsletter. I'm really curious to see how this progresses. I was not aware automated cat litter boxes were a thing until now.
Thanks so much for the sub! hopefully it works out well but we'll see!
From one Rustacean to another, great video!
Hey I know you!
you should get like a whole set of greetings for every cat so the voice doesn't get boring.
Maybe scrap some quote of the interwebs? Dunno, just throwing ideas at you. Great vid.
Thanks! I planned on doing a couple different lines for them i just wasn't sure what they should say yet. I'll for sure try and come up with some other funny ones :)
Amazing stuff my man, let''s keep this channel snowballing 🌚
Hello. Another Tom Scott-driven view. This was a lot of fun to watch and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. Btw, the voices felt spot on!
haha thanks! i thought so too, glad to have you!
Well done. Fully on board...
A tip to help with dusty cats: consider switching to pine pellet litter! You can pick up a 40lb bag for under $8 at tractor supply. It also completely neutralizes pee smell. Great video 💕
Thanks for the tip! We originally got this litter because it was advertised as flushable but I'm not opposed to trying something else
@KeithSachs The only potential drawback about pellets for this automation project is you'll have to sift & scoop to clean it, I'm happy to answer questions about it because I did a ton of research pretty recently haha
@@callmeperch For sure, i'll ping you if i have any questions!
Engagement go brrrrrrrrrr.
I think you know by now why I'm here :D
Gotta say, for a first video, this is extremely polished! You remind me a lot of William Osman and Stuff Made Here, which I really love!
I shall be anxiously watching this channel for new updates :]
Don't feel pressured to pump out videos for your fans, by the way. I find that many channels that do that produce seemingly "forced" content, which is not what making is about.
P.S. You said you like William, Kevin (the Backyard Scientist), and Allen Pan, but have you ever heard of Safety Third? It's a podcast they run together that seems right up your alley.
haha yes! i love the safety third podcast! and yeah the videos will take however long they take, i have a full time job so i can't spend a ton of time on them or anything. But i'm super excited to put out content! It makes me super happy you think my video is like william and stuff made here because they are both absolutely inspirations for me! thank you so much
I love this! More of this. Please! - Love Derpimus
There will be more from me for sure!
this is why I pay for the internet. Subscribed!
Here from the Tom Scott wave, love the video, the voices are hilarious! Can't wait to see more!
I appreciate you checking it out! i thought they were pretty good haha! I'm excited to make more!
Great video! I'm excited for what comes next 👍
Also your cats are VERY cute 🥰
they're little sweethearts for sure! i love them very much. Thanks so much for watching!
Seems like I have a new channel to keep up on. Subscribed.
thank you so much!
That mostly-black cat is incredibly chill.
Haha yes! She's a very good girl
Incredible first video! Also came from the Tom Scott newsletter, and I i agree you've got a great story arc and interesting format. Looking forward to part 2!
Thanks so much! i'm looking forward for part 2 as well, admittedly probably for different reasons though 😆

Cheap fancy homemade litterbox here I come!
Utterly delightful and well done!
Lol great idea but we have 5 cats so the voice notification could be overwhelming lol
maybe just a little 🤣
Tom sent me and I’ve subscribed.
Great video and looking forward to the next one.
Thanks so much i really appreciate it!
You’re about to get a ton of views
Great video. Great editing, especially for video number one. Mainly commenting to help boost that algorithm.
Thanks so much for watching the video and i'm glad you enjoyed it, i definitely have a lot to learn in terms of editing and film and i'm very excited for the journey!
Excellent video! I'll be following for future updates!
Thanks! :) you seem to have some pretty interesting content yourself! I'll have to check it out haha
First video? Good job. Looking forward to the next episode.
thanks so much! yeah this is the first video i've ever really done!
Keith, I've subscribed. Like many others, @tomscott pointed me to your site. Can't wait to see the next one. Keep at it, even when the going gets tough (as it inevitably will).
@@q8386 I'll do my best, i appreciate it!
Awesome video. Looking forward to part two. We have four stinky cats so I'm hoping your final project idea works well, because I'm planning on replicating it.
BTW I too was sent by Tom Scott :)
Ahhhh thanks! i hope so too haha!
I came here from Tom Scott’s newsletter.
The general rule for litterboxes is to have N+1, where N equals the number of cats. Also, if you scoop it every day, it will be far less stinky.
We have multiple litter boxes, the cats just generally prefer the one in the video for whatever reason. Athena, the mostly white cat is on a prescription diet and ever since being on it she's just been extra stinky, She also doesn't bury anything which doesn't help haha
love the video mate! We both got tom scotted XD
haha yeah! your video is an amazing show of dedication i have to say, not sure i have the mental fortitude to complete a project that large, huge Kudos!
@@KeithSachs thanks man! Glad you enjoyed. It was a labour of love really haha
Maybe at some point in the future it would be good to build somthing together?
@@Gregulations Hell yeah, would be my honor to work with you 😁
I would like to learn more about how you fixed the antenna!
Looking forward to the sequel!
Since the inductance was too low compared to the original antenna, I Just added a bunch of wire so it was way over, then i cut off one loop, measured the inductance, and repeated until it was as close as I could manage to the original.
Thanks for watching! I've got some other videos planned before the sequel to this one, so I hope you'll enjoy those too!
@@KeithSachs Thank you for this explanation. I already subscribed, and look forward to more videos!
Since I have a friend with a pet-supply shop, I am wondering how big the coil could be
😅🤣
@Wheeze_NL probably pretty big tbh, I think as long as the inductance works out right it should be fine, I imagine large enough for most pets is possible
@@KeithSachs I am imagining covering the entry door to the shop 😂
That was excellent!
Thanks so much for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it
Diggy Diggy to China. Our Whoflungpoo cats.
Great video! I've always wondered about how to read those chips inside pets!
i hope the video helped give some understanding for you! i'm glad you enjoyed it, i enjoyed making it :)
Keep up the good work Keith!! (i was sent by Tom)
Thanks so much! i'll do my best!
SERVANT I'M GOING TO THE RESTROOM
I've been meaning to try out Embedded rust for a while now. I've heard it's come really far since the early days.
it's great! especially if you opt for Espressif chips, they're putting tons of effort into Rust
Very nice video. Well put together! One quick question: what is that microphone you're using?
im using a Hollyland Lark M1 I believe, it was a cheap decent sounding wireless mic. I'm pretty happy with it I think

Ms Sachs is funny. Hang in there, it will clean itself, eventually.
haha! thats what i keep telling her 😆
he was right, feels like uve been doing it for a while... funny gags
First video ever!
Tom Scott was right, interesting and good to watch😎 Thanks to his anonymous tipper!
haha I'd love to know who gave him the tip! glad you enjoyed it!
As retired tech I really enjoyed it. Maybe go easy on the jump cuts in future, too many can be distracting.
For sure, I think the jumpcuts are mostly a consequence of my inexperience. I'll try my best to get shots to be more fluid and require less cuts in the future!
how am i supposed to compete with this level of handsome?
Says the man with fabulous hair
Here because of Tom Scott
I've been trying for many Christmases to make a cat-detection system so I can scare my cat away from my Christmas tree. I've tried PIR, PIR + touch, Bluetooth RSSI (one point), and Bluetooth RSSI trilateration (5 anchors). If I knew anything about PCB design I would add a UWB tag to his collar. For now I haven't figured out how to make a long-lived button-cell-powered UWB tag. Advice / collab welcome :)
i wouldn't call my self super amazing at PCB design either! this was my first try ever making an antenna haha. i almost feel like a vision system might be the best / most inexpensive option in your case
@@KeithSachs My cat mostly harasses the tree at night and I don't want to leave the lights on. Maybe I could use an IR camera.
@mikebenza yeah, IR should work well i think, a lot of vision systems change the image to black and white anyway
@@KeithSachs I just need to find a good spot that isn't obstructed by gifts / the tree. I think that's partly why my PIR attempt didn't work -- there are so many hidey-holes for a cat around the tree that I couldn't detect him well enough.
I am in. I want to build one as well for my cat but even just the rfid part would be handy to know how long he is in the potty to keep an eye on potential medical problems.
i'll release whatever i can!
@@KeithSachs What did you use for the RFID board? This rig you built would be great for checking for tags on ferals near me.
@@devinholland2189 this is the board i personally used, but there are tons on aliexpress that i imagine would work fine

Really enjoyed it, but... could you go easy on the jumpcuts next time? (And what's with holding a microphone designed to be clipped on so you don't have to hold it?)
Thanks so much! Jump cuts are definitely something i need to reduce. I think its mostly just a consequence of inexperience, ill for sure try to get everything in longer takes in the future! Holding the mic is just what all the cool zoomers do haha! I probably will avoid it in the future too though
Sorry mate. This looks really interesting, I love cats and I love tech (I'm here from Tom Scott) and I really want to see what you did, but the video edit cutting every three or four words rendered it unwatchable for me. I gave up 3 minutes in, it was hurting my eyes and starting to give me a headache.
Please, please try and do longer takes, I'd rather you said "erm" occasionally or flubbed a line than have the video chopping about like a flip-book.
Totally understandable! It's something i want to work on for sure! Hopefully it comes with more experience
Tom Scott armyyyyyyy
The obvious solution is to get a dog that eats cat turds.
