- My talk at MathsJam, 11th November 2023.
Camera: Ayliean MacDonald
Vision mixing: Tiago Hirth, Ben Sparks
Speaker: Ben Ashforth
Following the talk, Daniele Aurelio made me aware of a second Pi Day road, "Vicolo 14 Marzo 1848" in Bitonto near Bari.
Here are the slides from Adam Townsend's talk the previous year, which set the precedent: www.mathsjam.com/assets/talks...

Amazing! Many thanks to Tom Scott for sending me this way!
You Sir, are doing the work of your chosen deity. Possibly the most useful thing done in the world for many years.
Fun idea, excellent execution!
If you're reading this after February 2024 and wondering why you just got such a giant spike in views, it's because Tom Scott recommended this video in his weekly newsletter.
And I'm extremely pleased to see that February 29 is not missed, partly thanks to the fact that 2024 is a leap year.
…and that’s why I’m here. And highly enjoyable it is!
Publish a page per day calendar with these photos and you’ll make a mint.
There's a freely downloadable page-per-month calendar at www.benguin.co.uk/2023/download.html if you don't mind printing it yourself.
@@woollybenguin3479 I don’t have a printer, and if I can’t order it from Amazon then it’s not going to happen. What am I doing with my life? Answer: nothing.
this is ridiculous, rigorous and entertaining, THANK you.
What an incredible project and entertaining presentation - I applaud your commitment to figuring this all out... and then actually visiting them all. Incredible.
Thanks Tom
This is so cool!!!!
It's insane that you fit all that work, effort and time into a 5 minute presentation. Very efficient. Thanks!
What a wonderful idea, superbly executed and concisely presented.
Fantastic. Goals!
Wow!
I’m sure you’ll get quite a boost from the 617 current views on your video thanks to Tom Scott’s newsletter, but this was really great! Fun concept, educational algorithm and really efficient and to the point execution!
One of the best 5 minute video presentations I've watched! My only wish is that the quality of the microphone was a little bit better, you should look to do one of the TedX rounds Mr Benguin!
Incredible!! This needs to be a TED Talk! :)
The world is a better place for having folks willing to do such ridiculous things in it. Well done.
This is a killer project and presentation, I hope you had a good trip!
Fantastic talk well delivered, and a brilliant idea. Bravo 👏
Wonderful video!
Oh I'm certainly gonna print that calendar and use it as a planner! Thanks for the talk and for the brilliantly executed trip and idea. You are a pure legend
I found myself clapping, too, at the end of this! Bravo!
Genius
That is genuinely a work of art.
Excellently done, on every level.
I am envious of that road trip. :)
That was incredible
Wow, 5 minutes doesn't do this justice, I could've listened to this for 5 hours! Brilliant, brilliant stuff (and thanks Tom Scott sending me here)
Excellent work!
Best one year 5 minutes presentation!
I totally agree with the other poster : this instantly became my favourite mathsjam talk ever, with no close competition. (I've been to a lot of mathsjams now 14+?) Simply bonkers and superb in equal measure. Thank you for taking the task that no one asked for, so seriously, that we all now know we should have. Simply wonderful.
What a joyful trip, amazing algorithm.
I applaud your dedication!
What a ridiculous idea and an insane amount of work; respect! I had a genuinely good laugh about this absurd and brilliant presentation!
This is so fantastic! This is the kind of thing I love! If only I had unlimited resources and time... 😂 Congratulations on your achievement!
Absolutely wonderful stuff
A hilariously brilliant undertaking - well done!
Amazing stuff - what was Adam’s talk that was referenced?

this was delightful, thank you tom!
An amazing talk!
Thank you Doctor Numberphile
My god. World class. Thank you for making and sharing, 54 out of 54 on the DaveGormanometer.
Until you said that I had completely forgotten that the reason why the "Via XX Settembre" sign caught my attention in 2004 was that earlier that year I had spent a day visiting every road in London which starts with "Z", an idea which I got from a throw-away comment in one of Dave Gorman's books.
Nerds. I swear.
(this is completely awesome and hilarious!!)
This was spectacular.
I didn't get to see you at the weekend, but this was the obvious highlight of MathsJam for pretty much everyone I spoke to. Magnificent commitment to the bit, but also a really well-judged delivery -- I think we'd much rather hear about the process and problems than see a slideshow of the dates. Excellent work :-)
Is the calendar on sale anywhere?
I'm not selling it but if you download the full-page pictures from www.benguin.co.uk/2023/download.html then it will be on sale from anywhere you know which does printing.
Perfect algorithm! Wish I had Decision Maths students right now.
Oh, that's charming and fascinating - love the algorithm. Thanks to you Sir Benguin and thanks to Tom Scott for pointing me here.
I'd love to know more about how to actually calculated the optimal route. Do you have any code you could share?
If you really want to see the code, it's here: benguin.co.uk/2023/plan_route_2.m It's uncommented Matlab code which I never intended anybody else to use though so you could probably understand how it works better from just watching the video that from looking at the code. Lines 62 to 428 are the seed, which now specifies all 366 places to visit so If I run the code now it does nothing because there are no other dates left to find.
Marvellous! Truly remarkable and I’m so very envious of your trip. (Kudos to Tom Scott and his reader Mikey for sending me here)
Seven weeks of travelling for a five minute talk.
I know you had a 5-minute time limit to fit this in but my WORD you talk fast, I had to slow the video to x0.75 to understand you and English's my native language!
I wondered whether people would do that. I wouldn't have presented it like that in the old days when the talks weren't videoed.
3:39 - Someone mooning their backside on the central reservation
Ha! Sorry about the poor picture quality. It's actually somebody in a flesh-coloured jacket kneeling down and facing me.
Tom coming in with a great recommendation!
You deserve an MBE
What's his OF?
I wish you spoke a bit slower. Very cool an interesting project
Seven weeks 😂
