Mazda3 Turbo AWD Hatchback | Ownership Review

- Last August I purchased a 2021 Mazda3 Turbo AWD Hatchback as my daily driver, and it's just about perfect. I love this car. It looks great, drives great, and is an excellent value -- and, you should buy one.
I just bought the exact same car a week ago- 2.5 turbo hatchback, premium plus, Polymetal gray metallic exterior, red leather interior. I absolutely love it and always look forward to driving it. Great power train and handle, feels luxurious and high quality- all at incredible value; a perfect t daily driver. Nice video !
Thank you and congratulations! It’s an excellent daily! 🎉
You made an excellent choice. I have a 2014 Mazda 3 sedan. No issues and still running strong. I'm hoping Mazda will bring the Skyactiv X to the United States.
Great to hear! Thanks, Robert!
I just got the 2022 Mazda3 AWD Turbo in Soul Red and it was not my intentional first choice. I could find or get the price I wanted for a VW GTI. And so while looking at the Miata. (Wife denied) The dealership was comfortable, the salesman’s was actually not unruly.. we decided to look around, and that when it happened. Parked in the back, my new car. Because I did not do a ton of research. I’ve been chasing info for why I made the right choice. Your video helped a lot.
Excellent! Great choice. Glad to hear it helped. It’s a truly top-notch daily driver!
I wish aluminum foot pedals would be standard for a more luxurious look.
Just got a 2023 black turbo premium plus and it's literally my dream car. The drive is amazing. Powerful and IMO one of the most beautiful cars on the road. And like you said I never see them. I've seen 1 in the last 5 months.
I just got the same car 2022 Premium Plus Turbo AWD Polymetal Gray but with black interior.(they didn’t have it in red). Great review and I agree it’s a fantastic daily driver.
So happy to hear there’s another on the road! Thanks for watching!
Was there a markup when you got yours? I’m still in the market for one but I think they’re marking I up a bit around me.
@@lowellb3426 no mark up! At Bountiful Mazda.
The 2022 is $35k+ around me. I’m gonna wait a bit “maybe” the market will drop lol 🥲 used ‘21 are $33-34k around here too.
@@lowellb3426 Got it at MSRP- $35k
Agreed wife has the 21 cx30 turbo in same color awesome little cuv. Was looking at one of these for myself but with chip shortages and Covid I’ll wait til things settle down
I finally got my 2022 Mazda 3 turbo with the premium package after waiting 7 months! Definitely worth the wait! I'm loving it so far! I know Mazda has been having issues pumping out the turbos due to inventory in Japan where they're made. So glad I was able to get my hands on one. Such a sharp looking car inside and out.
Very happy for you! You'll love it!
Grew up in your neighborhood, and I just ordered my 22’ turbo 3 hatchback in this color and trim. Excited for the new daily, and to keep the miles off my truck!
Hey man! I definitely remember you. You'll love the car! Congratulations!
Awesome video! You are one of the rare people who have the exact same trim as me...Polymetal Grey Premium Plus with Red Leather interior lol. You are right, though about the 3 Turbo in any trim being very rare out on the streets in the U.S. I live in L.A./So Cal, and I've maybe only seen 3-4 of these around. I've seen many of the AWD variation in Polymetal Grey, but not the Turbo.
I've had my car for a little over a year now (February 21), and I'm still in love with it. I have some cool decals on mine now. Drives like a beast with the AWD, and I've taken it on several canyon runs with car crews around here.
One thing I will say...there is rattling in my infotainment area and the rear right and left door areas. I baby the car on bumps and over potholes, and only go quickly when i feel I have a smooth road. Looking to figure that out, but aside from that, couldn't be happier 🙌
I totally agree and have some slight rattles as well. No big deal.
I drive all over. You see this car the most in the Northeast and the Upper Midwest (IL, MI, OH) I see the CX30 more everywhere but the 3 not so much, but mostly in the places mentioned. I would probably go with the CX30 even though I love the way the 3 looks more.
Great review man, love the car , it’s a head turner for sure , best in its class, Mazda don’t have luxury brand so they put alots of effort in their brand.
Thank you very much! I agree!
Got the same car had the windows tinted the car looks even better now and it looked great before driving it alot of fun very happy with this purchase
I'm located in Bountiful, Utah I have a 21' Mazda3 Turbo soul Red. I absolutely agree with you. It's a fantastic daily commuter car, and pretty quick too.
Hey, good to hear from a fellow Bountiful man! I'll keep my eye out for your soul red turbo! Great choice.
Great review with a lot of detail. Mazda should pay you for this review. Sold.
This is my car exactly, (sans snow tires) and I've had it from new since Decmber 2020. I have many of the same thoughts you do, and love this car today almost as much as I did on day one.
My complaints are minor, and things I already knew and accepted when I bought it. Rear visibility is non-existent, but I've gotten used to it...blind spot monitoring saves the day. The infotainment isnt the latest, greatest or easist to use, but after just a few weeks it became second nature to me and I can do most anything I need to do with only a quick glance at the screen. (Favorites button is great) Once again this is something I knew beforehand and accepted, but this is basically a two seater with a couple of seats in the back if there is no other option. I'm 6'1" so whoever behind me better be pretty short😂 Only other complaint I can think of is the ride isnt great over bad pavement, but then again this isnt a luxury barge..I think it's a good tradeoff for the handling, my gf disagrees though.😊
With that out of the way, the pluses far outweigh the minuses. Nothing in this same pricerange can touch the interior, same goes for the sound system. (Acura Integra type S comes close on both counts I must admit) The power of the turbo engine makes everything so effortless...wether getting up to speed on a freeway onramp or passing two slow farming trucks at the same time on a two lane backroad. Simply effortless speed with no drama. I previously had a 2016 VW GTI that probably handled a bit better at the limit, but I dont drive at the limit on public roads, the 3 is equally fun to drive imo...but I do wish it either had a manual or something like VW's DSG.
Other than the battery prematurely going belly up overnight about 2.5 years into my ownership and the infotainment freezing up once (cured by a restart) I've had no issues whatsoever with this car. I do oil changes every 6k (full synth) and other reccomended maintenance, but it still runs and drives like it did the day I bought it, but now handles better (Pirelli P Zero tires) and gets better gas mileage. I agree, perfect daily driver for one or two people.😎
I had a 2021 in Soul Red Metallic and it was an amazing car to drive. Plenty of power, handles well and always got a lot of compliments on it. My only complaint with it was interior space, specifically the back seat. It was a lease and dealer offered to buy it back early, so ended up trading it in for a 2022 CX-5 in the same color combo (poly metal/red interior). I do miss the 3 though. Wish I we're able to keep both!
Yeah, the more I drive it the more I realize how tight the backseat is, especially with headroom. It really is more of a four-seater, with small-ish humans in the back. Glad you got the CX-5 -- great car!
Thank you for this review. I was worried about the blind spot too but you made it clear to me.
Dont worry.corksport will make some going fast goodies soon.....just watch
I'm so glad I watched this review... lookalike a fantastic car.. my future ride.. and i own 2008 golf vw and I am about to jump to this beauty.. ☺
You’ll love it!
I picked up a 2023 Mazda3 Turbo Premium Plus hatch a couple of weeks ago (in that gorgeous Soul Red Crystal). Traded in a 2019 Ford Fiesta ST that I had bought back in January. The Fiesta was fun, but it was missing a lot of creature comforts that I was looking for in a daily driver, and since the previous owner had done a lot of mods that, while done very well (the owner was a Ford technician), made the car really raw and not really something that my wife and I could go out with for a nice dinner or the like. Plus, she can't drive a manual which made it less than ideal should she ever need to take it for some reason.
So far, I'm really enjoying the car. I do find the seat bottoms a little firmer than I'd like, but maybe they'll become more comfortable as they get broken in. Also, the heated steering wheel is kind of weak, at least as compared to our 2021 Ridgeline or my 2022 Camaro. Overall though, I think it's a great car, and it's checking all the boxes I was looking for.
Congratulations!
Getting mine in a few days to replace my fully loaded 2018 3 Sport GT… This review did tip the scale.
Glad to hear it!
@@jasonbellcars I already pretty much knew that’s what I was gonna get since I bought my 2018 (Had a 2013 before that and parents have had a CX-5 GT since 2016) but was nice to see that most reviewers praise the 3 turbo. As my first brand new car, I wanted to make sure I made the right choice, especially since I couldn’t get a test drive before buying (no inventory).
Noticed a weird squeak when shifting above 30mph and 40mph in the 2-3k rev range in my AWD select sedan. Idk if anyone else out there feels something similar
Great review
Thank you!
I'm waiting for my 2022 to be delivered here in Québec in 2-3 weeks and I just knew that the red interior comes now with black leather on the dash and the doors, I'm so disapointed :(
I wasn't aware of that leather change! That IS disappointing! Well, I'm sure you'll enjoy the rest of the car. It's a great one!
@@jasonbellcars apparently this change affects only Canada 😡 At least the stiching is red
Currently waiting for mine in the US. I’m not 100% certain of the trims you have in Canada, but the Turbo Premium Plus comes with red leather on the dash here in the US, all the other trims that have red leather as an option, have black leather on the dash 😕
@@aurekogaming6600 there is only one trim for the Turbo in Canada. I saw one like mine at my dealership yesterday and the dash was black with red stitching.
@@pierre-olivierlaberge2004 Je suis en train de me faire une tête pour une AWD Turbo machine grey et l'intérieur rouge... As-tu eu la tienne?
Have you ran into the issue with your backseat down that you can't slide your center armrest back and open it?
How is the blind spot? Is it hard to navigate in the city?
I was worried about it, but it honestly hasn't been an issue at all. And no, it's great in the city! The blind spot isn't that big in real-life, and all the safety tech helps chime in if something is there.
People just need to adjust their mirrors properly.
What tint do you have? if you don't mind me asking. Debating on how dark to go when mine comes in. Thinking 30-35% would be just dark enough.
I think I did 30% all around and 80% on the windshield.
@@jasonbellcars Thank you so much for the quick response, Jason!! Love your videos
I think 30% is the sweet spot. 35% is just a tad too light (Though that’s the darkest legal tint in my state).
Thank you, Brandon!
Did I hear you correctly in that you are running 225/45's? If so, I was wondering how wide you could go on stock rims.
Yes, correct. That's just what was available at the time for Blizzaks. This is about as wide as I would go on the stock rims.
Dont any of you face problems getting in and out of the car? Im not tall by any means at 178cm. But when i sit straight, my hair can touch the roof of the car sometimes, and my head gets obstructed when i get in and out of the car. Its such a shame because mazda 3 literally looks like my dream car.
adujust your seat dude just drops it using the levers thats what i do i fit likea glove in the car and im 6'1
I don't do cm so no idea how tall you are, but I'm 6'1" and do find myself having to get really low to get in, but I've gotten used to it. The first few weeks I hit my head either getting in or out😂 Having said that, I like the feeling of being low when driving so it's a fair trade-off for me.
What do you think of the cx30? Everyone is buying SUVs
I like the CX-30, but I prefer the dynamics and personality of the Mazda3!
I test drove a CX-30 non-turbo, and in my opinion it is a lifted Mazda 3 hatch. Interior is virtually the same (few minor differences) and the handling is still very good, but not quite as sharp as the 3, especially the turbo.
I'd get the CX-30 if you have bad knees because a tall person such as myself (6'1") has to really get low to get into the 3. The CX-30 also has quite a bit more ground clearance if you live in a state that gets heavy snow that isn't always cleared from the roads.
How in the world are you averaging 28 mpg? I barely get 21 in the exact same spec car
I’d say I’m about 70% highway lately. And I haven’t been hammering the throttle as much.
I got horrible mileage the first year or so, but after the engine broke in at about 10k miles and I got used to the power (didn't get on boost as often) my gas mileage increased quite a bit. I was able to get a hair over 34 mpg on 165 mile highway trip last winter using premium.
Hey Jason this or the civic touring? i like to go fast
I would probably say the Mazda! Tons more torque and very fun in sport mode!
The latest Civic is nice, no doubt about it, but the Mazda is a more premium experience imo. Reviewers always say "it's a warm hatch, not a hot hatch", but as someone who came directly from a 2016 VW GTI (considered the hot hatch benchmark) to a 2021 Mazda 3 turbo hatch, I disagree. Yes there is no manual or dual clutch auto, but in every other way it IS a hot hatch, but more premium feeling than the GTI. Again, just my opinion.
What kind of winter tires do you run?
Blizzaks, always! I had Michelin X-Ices on my WRX STI and they were great, too. But, I usually go for Blizzaks. Totally worth it.
Awesome! Thanks
It's simple why it's not selling. No one looking at Audi, Mercedes, or BMW is going to even give Mazda a second look, much less a first one. And that's coming from a Mazda owner. Love my 2009 Mazda 6 sSport V6. Honestly, Mazda screwed up royally taking the 3 upscale. Two reasons. First, already mentioned above. Second, pricing it out of the wallets of their core-customer base. You don't do that, without sales suffering horribly. I'm in the market for a new car. Honestly, I'm not looking at Mazda.
if no on is looking for bmw mercedes or audi why wouldnt they look at mazda ? a resonable prices car turboed reliable good looking awesome interior and the biggest its not a CVT transmission AND SHE IS quicdk SO WHAT mistake did they make going upscale ? you think they would have selled anything if they didnt ?
they did the right thing goiung upscale i love my mazda 3 an i think they did a awesome job
but everyone has there own prference some could be price some could be speed or whatever
its up to you not to look at mazda but probabaly would think twice about it when you end with a cvt tranmission car cause thats what all the cars have now i rather take mazda over every car brand no matter who they are if there line up has cvt
