    3. Coconut Oil. (Works not well for layers, but well for blending)

    I went on a cruise a few years ago and packed my art supplies to while away the time in between activities. Got on the boat and realized I left all my blending supplies and my monochromes in the car... I ended up using paper straws from the beverage station, aloe-infused hand lotion, tissues and black eyeliner pencil to draw an awesome red/blue seahorse. I left it for our amazing cabin guy to keep. I took pics of it and I still look at it occasionally and marvel at how much you can use everyday items to draw with. I went through a phase in high school where I used mascara to crosshatch some stuff too. Wonderful video :)

    Great video. I would never use oil of any sort to blend as it does cause issues with the paper later on (can go rancid which isn't fun), but I use isopropyl alcohol(basically the stuff used to clean computer monitors) to blend out. It works really well. Pretty much the same as acetone (nail polish).

    Thank you SOOO MUCH for this video! Always loved painting, drawing and sketching as an hobby to do something when you need to relax. But as painting produced more beautiful results, I shifted more towards painting. But the materials required need to be of the best quality and are a lil bit expensive. So couple of days before only I decided to use color pencils and then today I saw this amazing video of how you can make the colors look so beautiful and homogeneous by using a solvent. And that solvent could also be simple household stuff!! Really appreciate this video and I'm soon gonna try this!
    Love from India!

    Loved watching this. I'm new to working with colored pencils (haven't used them much at all since grade school some 50 years ago, LOL telling my age!) so haven't really done any blending. One thing I wondered as I watched this -- I would have liked to see a couple of control pieces -- try blending one with a dry cotton bud, and blending one with just water on the bud, just to show how much (if any) of your blending is from the bud itself or from just any liquid, as opposed to the specific item you're testing. Otherwise really well done!

    Great video. I like seeing you experimenting for me. Saves me the time and expense of trying various products.
    Prismacolor makes clear blending pencils and clear blending markers. With the markers, it’s best to buy several and label each with a color, because the nub absorbs color and can transfer it to the next color. I was a public school art teacher, now retired. We used a zillion colored pencils each year. I labeled blending markers with all of the basic colors so each table had a set. In school, I would probably not use nail polish remover because of the fumes, but there is nail polish remover that is acetone-free, so I might try that on my own work to see if it works.
    Another alternative to the clear blending markers is to buy very light shades of Prismacolor markers, then you have a blue one to use on blue colored pencils, green on green, etc. However, nail polish remover would be much less expensive.
    I also use watercolor colored pencils. I use one of those brushes with a well of water to lightly go over the color to blend it. Once dry, I often add details with fine-line permanent markers, technical pen, or regular colored pencils.

      She’s using both. Prismacolor are wax based, polychromos are oil based and luminance are a mixture of wax and oil.

    Thanks for taking the time to do this. I wish all the butterflies were done with the same color for better comparison. Different colors may blend better than others, so all the same colors used would be better. Thanks again

    I didn't even know this was possible which is a shame because I would have been trying these things years ago but my art lessons at school were in the 1970's and this was never covered. Now at 60 I hope that I can find a whole new world of art and give all these new things a try. Thank you so much for doing this amazing video, I've now subscribed and look forward to more of your wonderful tutorials. I'm off to give this a go with my granddaughter and see how we get on :D :D :D

    I use it Benzyc Acid for blending (other names: Benzin 80/110, Benzium, Petroleum Ether). It's cheap and dry very fast. Same as the Gamsol. I bought in the apotheke (10 EUR/l). This solvent is working well with polychromos.

    Distilled white vinegar on a sponge tip makeup applicator works very well. It makes the colors even more vibrant and saturated as well

    Should all colored pencil pieces be blended? The colors are much more vivid... With a light fast solvent, wouldn't it be a better piece? Or does it depend on what you're drawing?

    Next video topic suggestion : cost effective way to achieve good pigmented coverage without purchasing those expensive quality pencils :') I simply adore the look they give but the price makes my heart bleed.

    • @moxiephillips9661
      @moxiephillips9661 5 років тому +1

      Droolpuppy Try the prismacolor scholars! In US Premier 12pc set is $24.99, whereas Scholar 12pc is $13.49. I was trained with Premier and I actually prefer the Scholars. The difference is that Premier is soft core and Scholars is hard core. They’re nearly equally pigmented from my swatches. I prefer the Scholars partially because of the price and partially because they don’t break nearly as much when sharpening or in the core if they take a tumble. If you can buy from US shops, Michaels and Hobby Lobby both carry them and pretty much always have a 40% off a regular price item coupon. I used that coupon at Michaels and got the 12pc set for $8. Hope this helps!!!

      @judykrajecki462 3 роки тому

      @@moxiephillips9661 At our Michael's the price is over $2.25 a pencil! Waiting for a coupon is annoying. You can buy individual pencils far less expensive at Blicks. They start at $1.35 each. I looks like Cheap Joe's and Jerry's Artarama only sell them in sets.

    USING WATERCOLOR PENCILS like a pencil without water, what do I use to preserve my drawing? If I spray anything on it will it make the drawing bleed since I used it like a color pencil and no water?
    Did I say this correct?

    • @moxiephillips9661
      @moxiephillips9661 5 років тому +2

      Try a spritz of a sealant for pencil and charcoal. Do a swatch and spray that first to test so if it does cause bleeding, it won’t be doing that on your piece. Hope this helps!!

      Use a product called ( in the US) “Workable Fixative” if you think you may want to go back into the art piece to make corrections, add layers etc. or you can use just “ Fixative” if you don’t need to go back into the piece and add more layers . These products are great for graphite, pastels as well as colored pencils, watercolor pencils and watercolors. As with ALL products , test before using on your art piece in case it reacts wirh your particular paper or art media. And follow the directions of spraying several thin coats not one thick coat!!
      I use these Spray Fixatives in my mixed media art when I’ve used a water based media and I want to add something on top that I think will smear my water based media . So far I’ve used the fixatives wirh just about every media you can think Of ( nothing oil based) and I haven’t had an issue.
      It’s in an spray can , and the brand name is Krylon . You can get it at Michaels and other craft stores, as well as art supplies like Dick Blick, Jerrysartarama , Cheap Joe’s etc.

    Have you tried mineral oil? Also, a friend tried EVOO but even with blotting, it became sticky some months later and it had a slight odor. She has to keep in a glassene envelope. Great cats eye by the way.

      Marleigh Mae i guess in a way it is. They probably are both made from petroleum, not sure. I don’t use petroleum products on my skin. Which then makes me think of petroleum jelly as another item to blend with. I’m going to have to try it because I print with an inkjet printer onto copy paper and my ink smears if wet by water and I figure liquid mineral spirits might do the same.
