Lol, I only know my native language Filipino and English and this guy is much better than me. I sometimes, no, always forgot my native language.
i wouldnt say that speaking 3 languages at good level is kinda hard or something
Garnt and Joey also speak multiple languages. Yes, the struggle. That's most of the world speaking multiple languages.

The fact that he's only been in the industry for five years and yet he's been involved in some of the biggest anime of recent years is seriously impressive. Not a single project he's worked on hasn't been hugely successful, goddamn.
Exactly! Man just talks casually about being a part of probably the two biggest anime movies of the decade and has been in the industry in only five years
I mean, not to undermine his work, I love Ken Arto's animations, but right now there's a shortage of animators in the japanese animation industry, mostly because japanese beginners are turned off by the impossibility to live off of that job (underpaid + overworked as fuck) and most studios are desperate to get any decent artist on their productions (hell, there's some youtubers who were contacted to get into a production even though they didn't know how to draw)
Outsourcing is huge in the japanese industry, you could say at this point the industry lives off of it as most of the anime episodes you've ever seen have been for the most part outsourced to cheap chinese and korean studios
@@gian.4388 I know someone who got contacted to work on animes.

@@BearMeOut True dat. Very few franchises can manage like Pokemon or Hello Kitty where main selling point is not B I G T I T T I E S.
It sucks that they get paid little for their hard work, but on the other hand if they got paid 50% more, let's say, that comes around to us, the consumer. Streaming services will cost more, blu-rays will cost more, etc. And I don't know about you personally, but if you're like many anime fans and only pirate anime then it's not fair to say animators should be paid more when you don't even support the product. Again, not saying this is anyone in particular, just some anime fans in general.
They are so underpaid it’s cost average 2 million usd and they barely get paid like 1% of that right now

It still blows my mind how many stories I hear of people getting looked down on for liking & drawing Anime/Manga, so glad I never went to any art school.
I don't where you are from but in Europe this is veeeery common
It has a reason though. In order to be able to simplify real life, you first need the fundamentals, and many people coming into art school think that they can draw anime right away without fundamental knowledge and call their lazy attempt an "artstyle" while in reality they do it just because it's somewhat simplee with less detail that they wouldn't be able to add in anyways.
@@Cavi587 i think they mean, even with fundamental knowledge being put into an anime artstyle, it would still get ridiculed.
@@pixiepearl2783 you can't really put all fundamental knowledge into anime since it is a very confined style , so not really, you can put kowledge (was just using your term), but you cant use it fully through application
@@pixiepearl2783 Possibly yes, but you go to art school to learn. Most people going fresh to art school will most definitely be taught the fundamentals for a very long time at first before getting into more personal projects. But even then, in order for the teachers to test your knowledge and skill, you must create pieces that revolve around these fundamentals, and a simplified style is not fit for that. I guess what I mean is that art school isn't a place for your own style, that's what you do at home. You take all the things that you've learned at art school and put them into your own style, even if it's simplified or cartoonish.
Imagine this. 20 years from now The Boys are still going strong, they are supper famous and Ken comes to them again. First they watch this "old" video. Laugh about how young they were. And then Ken will tell them that animators in Japan are still fucking underpaid.

@Jannes Ebeling there’s an announcement on the 4th of April. They haven’t confirmed that announcement being Stone Ocean, but ofc it’s likely
I'm an art instructor from the Philippines. Here's why anime is frowned upon quite frequently.
It's because most art profs want art students to pursue studying the fundamentals of figure drawing which is realism or drawing the human figure in it's realistic form. Because once you master the anatomy, that's when you can explore stylizing or creating other styles such as comic book, anime, cartoons, etc.
I always put it this way, Think of drawing as a making a dough for baking and the bread, cakes and other pastries are the different art styles. You cannot jump from baking a cookie to baking a cake immediately. You have to master making the dough first before venturing out to other stuff you can bake (art styles.)
Where do you work? There are no art schools near my place here in the philippines, It sounds like I can learn more in this art school than where I am right now
But realism is different from learning fundamentals, body positioning, symmetry..., realism can be considered a style in it self
@@spring3281 realism is fundamental because that is where all other art forms derive their style form. When the first person drew an anime man who was his inspiration? A chicken? No idiot, obviously a real man

he has the coolest accent ever, half french half Japanese and while trying to speak in an English accent
@Kate A English is lenient. English is basically dumbed down Latin imbued with a mixture of all other languages in Europe, made so that the illiterate masses could have some sort of literacy for communication without wasting half their life learning it. One of the ways English is easy is that unlike most other languages, it doesn't give a gender noun for objects without life. Theres only a single 'the' for all the objects in the world. It's a crowd pleaser language.
@Kate A but it's leniency is what makes it a good language. It does the job of communication very very well. A few words can get your meaning across to almost anyone anywhere. It's only when you try to go in depth in the language, u realise how its also incomplete and kinda troublesome at times. For example, Shakespeare, to make sense of his plays and poems and the ideas he wanted to portray, he had to invent and add almost 1700 words to the English language. Even now, it's one of the few languages that has to keep updating it's dictionary from time to time as more words keep coming up.
@@prajwalkrishnabhat5539 Guess the phrase “there are no shortcuts in life” also applies to languages
There is barely any Japanese in there. It's very dominantly a French accent
As in a French person with a slight Japanese tinge, who learned English in France
Teachers regardless of age just denying "manga", this is pissing me off as well, just recently i was asked to showcase the "Best works of my mine according to my opinions & taste" to my teacher to evaluate my skills & knowledge. And i proudly brought in about 9 drawings, some were graphite, some were paintings, some were oil pastel, and of course i sneaked in a "Manga" drawing, I didn't really give a fuck that it was manga or not, i thought that the work that i have put in was probably the greatest and finest of all. That could have been an other ordinary graphite drawing, it could have been my oil pastel works, but that the one i thought was my very best happend to be "Manga" like drawing, and it was just mere coincidence..
So as she was flipping thru my works, she took about a minute to evaluate each work, but when she got to my manga drawing she just, flipped thru it right away, and she said "That's manga" with a disapproving face.. Look, i understand Manga as a style and or artistic choice can't be evaluated because it's history is merely TV / Manga entertainment, but mother fucker at least value the work i have put into it.. It's not like it was created via a wish fulfilling golden fish, it was still created by my hands and my tools..
I think all art teachers seem to be that way though. They're all seem to be assholes if they don't like a certain style.
I'm so lucky to have 1 art teacher that appreciate manga so much that he literally talk about it most of the time. But yeah, except for him, majority of art teachers only care about their opinion about art.
Dude I used to love drawing back when I was younger but in high school I got an art teacher who absolutely hated anime. After that I basically stopped drawing. Every now and then I’ll try to draw but get frustrated and end up not finishing it.
That is because your art teacher is incompetent and filled with Nietzschean resentment. People hate things that are better than them. Manga is a highly stylized artform that is not easy. It is the artform of the people and---of course---that means that elitist dickheads hate it.
I bet your art teacher has never sold a piece of art in their life.
@@karlnord1429 Or maybe it's just that anime was created as a cheap and quick way to make animation. Easy for anyone in the team to copy with no trace of personal style so that the studio doesn't depend on a single artist and so that they can hire animator with near to no experience. While it's starting to change in the last few years it's still mostly what it is for cheap studio and it will take even longer for that reputation to disappear.
It also doesn't help that the point of art class is to get out of your comfort zone by experiment with medium, style and subject you're not used to. In the last few decades student who draw anime gained the bad reputation of being very stubborn about staying in their comfort zone and only focusing on copying a single art style instead of actually learning and developing their art skill
I love how clueless Connor is about all this. Makes for a proper viewer surrogate. Probably their best episode content wise.
He got such a soothing accent and voice. The mix of French and Japanese is so nice to listen to, and him talking so calmly is really nice.
I genuinely found this episode one of the most (if not the most) interesting episodes of trash taste.
Needless to say my respect for animators skyrocketed aswell because damn like you hear about heavy work hours and stuff but when its coming out of the mouth of someone in this specific field it just hits different.

One misleading info about his cursus at 12:04 :
When Ken talk about the Bacalauréat, it's not a bachelor degree but the highschools end's exams in France, which is quite mandatory to most of college studies.
So after highschool he went to two animations school, the first one who lasted probably 3 years with an internship at the end, and the second one which is the goblin school, a very famous animation school in France. So he probably spent 5 years to college studies.
EDIT: Btw, to complement the podcast, I recommend for some who are interested in japan animation and how it works to watch Shirobako. It highlights quite well how things work in animation studio and it's just great, so go take a look.
Animators, especially people like this deserve a lot more money
in germany "toilet cleaners" - cleaning personell is partialy specialized profession. In some places they are requiered to use special machinery (from high pressure cleaners, lifts and even heavy machinery like chainsaws etc.). and they have to at least know a little about certain chemicals they're using.
Go watch something about crime scene cleaners f.e., very interesting
A former Friend of mine started as a normal "Gebäudereinger" (basic cleaner) but than he specialized in doing Cleaing of Microchip production sites (Reinstraumreinigung), he was payed very good for that.
I would very much like to know how a chainsaw is used in toilet cleaning.

This guy’s accent is really cool! Mostly French with touches of Japanese thrown in at seemingly random intervals
The lack of workers rights in Japan is disgusting and i wish more people would advocate for change.
For real, when Ken mentioned he's paid €2 per frame that took me back a bit. Doesn't help that there's that culture of working overtime too, and getting mobbed by Twitter if your animation looks off. I'm glad animators like him are passionate, but I wish they were paid more considering what they have to go through
And he works on verbal agreements, without a contract.

@Vezla inmobiliaria It's Twitter fault that their "hate speech" policy only applies in politics and not in threats like these.
