Hey all, it's day 14 here on Alex Lifeson month and today we have a look at how to play one of his most famous solos, the solo to Limelight from Moving Pictures. With apologies of course for picking apart Alex's own UA-cam tutorial for this one. Brave I know, haha.

Awesome job! Sounds great! Music is fluid. That solo is an excellent example!
The reason for that, is he would lay down 5 tracks for each song, then Neil and Ged would kick him out of the sound room, and they would pick and mix the parts they liked best. So often, he would end up with a solo that was unnatural and difficult to play, but said he liked that and found it a challenge, actually. 😂😂😂 This is hilarious! I bought that Alex tutorial when it first came out years ago! Poor Lersxt was sooo nervous during that lesson that I could barely follow it. I still get just as goofy today about that solo as I did the first time hearing it.

This is an easy solo that is a ton of fun to play. I have a tip for the last section after the 17th and 16th bends to play it more efficiently. After you grab that 16th and bend you pull up on the bar and vibroto. You want to try and match the 17th bend. Now instead of the triplets 14, 16, 18 twice then twice 16, 18, 19 on the "e"::: Grab the 14th (e-sting) with your index finger and slide to the 16th then hanmer your 4th finger on the 18th. Now your pinky is free to grab the 19th on the B. (same note as the 14th "e") then 16, 18 on the e-sting again. (this concludes the first triplets) Faster to pick and easier to fret as you are not spreading your fingers a mile apart. Now you are set up to blast the last triplets 16, 18, 19 twice and then 18, 19 and 21 to resolve the solo.

Extra touch with the final note`s vigorous bend - Alex activates that bend tone to a delay loop which rings in the background while playing first chords of chorus. He did it live too - check ESL live.

I'm sure that he did this tutorial many many years later, and over time he changed it by feel. I'm also pretty sure he doesn't sit around thinking about just how he originally played it, and how he was going to teach it properly with regards to the studio version.

Nice tutorial. Only correction is at the end he uses a looper on the final note…just looping a fraction of a second. I have an Eventide Time Factor that has a “Repeat” function that emulates this fairly well.
Hardest part of the solo? Getting back into the rhythm part at the end of the solo when playing with a band.
YES! I've been playing it correctly, WITH A TUNOMATIC BRIDGE, lol.
I had tried a version myself. many solos can deviate a bit and still sound good, but this one in particular almost demands that it adheres to the studio version.

What is your delay setting for this?
I think it's rather long. 650ms I think with 3 or 4 repeats.
Speaking of not playing things right, on your other vid I watched you weren't playing Finding My Way right.
Yeah Alex changes stuff, sometimes a bit, sometimes a lot. Same thing with the Bangkok solo part he demonstrated, it was slightly different.
If I remember correctly, I saw Alex play this live on a guitar with no whammy, which is probably why he's changed up the fingerings and the glissandos into the notes instead of using the bar. Next to EVH, Lerxt was an early Floyd Rose user on those bastardized Strats he played on Waves and Pictures.

He has a guitar with tremolo on every tour so why would he play it on a hard tail bridge?
What tour or concert are you speaking of?
@@dbrown6451 How the hell should I know? I've seen them 15 times. When he started getting Gibson support after Vapor Trails, he played lots of stuff on hard-tail Les Pauls. Your "I think so" and my "If I remember correctly" cancel each other out.
@@tomc4271 he played lots of songs on a hard tail that dont require a tremolo such as Tom Sawyer, Witch Hunt, Xanadu, YYZ, Earthshine. But not Limelight.
I think Al plays it without thinking so when he goes note for note in a tutorial he gets it wrong.
Exactly. His tutorial also has him fumbling around a lot trying to find notes and frets. It's pretty obvious that he doesn't put a whole lot of time or thought into the note for note teaching aspect of what he's doing. That's for us guys with a hell of a lot more time on our hands to worry about.
