    Try soaking your larger type seeds (corn, beans, peas, the larger seeds) They will spout so much faster once planted.

    I owned a waterfowl hatchery in 70s and kept my geese, ducks separated from the laying hens. Same shed with wire in between. Fed unmedicated grain to all. Crushed the grain for the babies and kept them sheltered until they started to get feathers. Male ducks killed the babies in order to mate, especially in the water.They got separated quick ! Both male and female geese will protect their goslings. Great parents.Had a 400 goose egg redwood incubator with a 98% hatch rate. Hope this helps you. I plan to raise Standard American Toulouse geese again and maybe call ducks.

    So glad you got the ducks out . . . that last one died from something different than yesterday. I would just caution to be careful not to transfer germs from ducklings to new Icelandic chick just in case . . . just to be safe. Those piggies are so happy, it's a pleasure to see them! Thanks!

    Good job duck catching!!! We have 4 muscovy babies in a small pen on grass (made of hardware cloth) that we move daily, we suplmemt them using ground corn and oats and lite DE powder for parasites- There doing awesome. The guy we got them from says that he keeps the babies separated till almost full grown because their not like chickens (really dumb till full grown - then instantly super smart) Hope how well your three musketeers do!!! Re: duckling Compared to my geese......their first year, they stepped on the goslings when they were walking and/ or protecting them, and one day I came home and both of my goslings were squashed. Sad to hear about the little duck. I'm amazed you caught the other three, the duck ninja. The pig feeder looks great. The pigs look like they've grown in just the few days on pasture. Good thing you were short on time in the morning, might have missed the Icelandic chick. That sure excited Miss Livvy. Loved seeing the pig feeder put into place. That's great news about the Icelandic chick! It's a shame about the duckling, but as I saw on a Thunder Ridge video yesterday, on the homestead the reality is that _'livestock'_ will also sometimes mean _'deadstock'_ I think the beans were perhaps Serbian rather than Siberian? Maybe _'Sir Beans'_ for short? :)

    Ducklings could possibly have been stepped on by the pigerators or zapped at the fence? We have ravens that will take wild newly hatched ducklings, as well as, any type of raptor. I remember seeing other vlogs that first year raised beds have a tendency to hard pan on the seed before they sprout a root. Heavy rains ( which I know you have gotten this season), downpours that fall hard and fast will really 'rock up' the soil. It can also do the same to a conventional ground bed, especially if the seed never formed a root. I love the soil condition and prep that those 'porkers' do for your Homestead!

    The ducklings aren't getting into the duck bath are they? They can get a chill really easily and can also drink themselves to death. Otherwise giving them a supply of greens like spinach and adding some brewers yeast to their food should help if its a possible nutrition issue and it can help bolster their immune system.
    But really just make sure they stay away from things like the paddling dish as they lack the oils to waterproof themselves right now and it doesn't take long at all for the cold to grab them.

    • @LumnahAcres
      @LumnahAcres  7 років тому +1

Last night I lost one that was 15 and wasn't sick at all. He was just dead-no marks, no nothing. maybe time now to not turn over any more .. just keep mulching or even a hugle bed and be undisturbed soil. to soil aggregates into a living community for the plants...and with the chicks and duckings I have seen other homesteaders with a finer fence on the bottom.. Justine Rhodes has quite a bit on homesteading chickens .. goose..

    I lost my first baby duckling and it looked stiff like that one. I saw no signs of cause. WTH. Looked over and the second one was missing it's head and my dog was coughing all day. Beak caught in throat. That dog never bothered the baby chicks or any other animal. She is very gentle and old. Guess she likes duck meat. We got a few new ducklings and kept them in a Hardware cloth pen by themselves. Electrolytes in their water is a must when they are little and in hot weather. Mine are getting big. One Cayuga Duck had a fight today with Lavendar Ameracauna hen. The ducks try to chase the hens away from food or whatever. Lavendar stood up to duck. ( My hens do not fight ) It only lasted a few seconds and I was sitting 5 feet away watching. Hens and Ducks do not mingle well. But all of mine free range during day. So they do come in contact Occasionally. Have their own pens if we leave the property and are locked up in their own houses at night. Best to keep poultry separate. We are still feeding ducks a grower starter non medicated crumble. Ducklings need Niacin. They love meal worms. Iceburg lettuce can give them loose stools and dehydrate them. Mine seem to like peas once in a while. All my poultry love watermelon in the summer !! Someone told me to back off the ACV in hot weather?? Electrolytes are better in hot weather. ?? Seems to be working for us. Good lick finding the cause and let us know.

    Some mamas just don't do a good job of raising their babies. Other mamas keep the babies all very close at all times. I think you just have a poor mama duck. Once they get out away from the others they stress and then they can chill - even in hot weather - and then they just die. I think brooder raising them for a while is the best choice.

    Al i have been wondering about the pigs and compost. Dont pigs carry some pretty nasty stuff? i mean parasites at least. you concermed about gardening in this area? i ask cuz i am ignorant on the subject and not trying to prove a point.

    • @LumnahAcres
      @LumnahAcres  7 років тому

      Its all in how you raise your pigs. If you feed them good food you should be all set. And once they are on pasture eating grass, greens, dirt and bugs. You are even better, that is there natural diet. You want to make sure they are on good clean soil

    The ducks would be better kept separately from the chickens which can be quite threatening. They will also thrive better if they have water to swim in.

    Was there something toxic the ducklings where eating? Another thought, watching a video on chicken chicks that said their butts could crust over with dried poop, creating a blockage and kill them. Now I'm only arm chair farming here so take it for what it's worth (but trying to be a productive member of your Lumnah Acres community 😉).

    idk if this will help www.offthegridnews.com/how-to-2/10-common-illness-foundin-ducklings/ for example Duck virus hepatitis is a highly fatal contagious disease of young ducklings, 1-28 days of age. Ducklings are most susceptible at the younger ages and gradually become more resistant as they grow older. The disease is rarely seen in ducklings over 4 weeks of age. The onset of the disease is very rapid, it spreads quickly through the flock and may cause up to 90% mortality. Sick ducklings develop spasmodic contractions of their legs and die within an hour in a typical "arched-backward" position

      Chris Young the ducklings have no bald spots or cuts so I'd say the chickens aren't to blame im thinking the ducks are inexperienced mothers and dont make sure the babies are getting enough food . They seem to be stressful running around maybe the mothers are more in protection than nurturing.

    You should never turn wood chips into a garden you are about to plant. Wood chips will tie nitrogen up in the soil as it breaks down. You should check out the youtube channel oneyardrevolution. I've found more than once even a little bit of water get's on it and there's black mold you might not see it at once but if you look under the first layer there's black mold ... I've found that Straw bedding is the best for the Baby and Adult Animals !!!
