- Game development update for the game PixelTribe that im currently working on. In this devlog series I discuss the progress of the game and different challenges ive met during development.
In this dev log I add some new boats, new continents to raid, and some new raid mechanics!
PixelTribe is a game where you can build, upgrade and manage your own clan of vikings. Here you can craft and equip weapons and armor for your vikings, and send them on different raids against other bad-guys.

arrows could be consumable but strong and mages could cause effects to permanently weaken or damage the enemy
Rewatching your old videos is quite interesting.. of how you went to basically nothing to what you got now.. when the trader price was still lo- anyways, love that already have mages, archers and more stuff got added!

I'd think it be really cool if the mages could have a healing ability, or one where they shoot a ice shard and it freezes the enemy.

Mage:

You could also implement a charge shot for the archer or mage that charges for 1 turn and then lets loose a powerful attack

Archers could do a multi shot, or like a piercing shot that can go through two enemies if angles correctly.
Mages could have just a fire or ice attack, or they could have a healing cast.
You could also create vikings with double-sided axes, vikings with long swords, vikings on horseback, or (and this ones my favorite) crackhead vikings which use their helmet as like a swinging attack

-meteorite (enemy go boom boom)
-portal (above their head which summons a kraken or sum and deals damage over time, like every turn 5 dmg(like a poison effect))
-lightning(zap zap)
-rampage(select viking to boost their dps)
-boosted(defence stat goes up)
-cursed(make the enemy viking lose defence or dps)
-wall(make a rock pop up out of the ground, the allied viking will not be able to attack as long as the barier is up, maybe archers can still attack)
-refueled(heals allies)
archer:
-arrowbarrage()
-doubleshot(shoot multiple arrows in one turn)
-poisonshot(shoot poison with damage every turn)
-aimbot(curve a shot that makes 2 enemies on the same lane take damage)
-archers duty(buff themselves in attack but lower defence a lot)
Mages seem like status effect guys, archers seem like damage guys, fighters seem like armor piercing or shredding guys (something to target tougher baddies), and defenders keep the party alive
Mages having a freeze, burn, or confuse/stun ability would suit this. There's also chain lightning (a classic).
Archers having split shot, aimed shot, pinning shot, fire arrow, barbed arrow (for bleed), etc

I think a necromancer mage would be cool, like when a unit dies it gets replaced with a weaker skeleton version (you could do it for both sides)

your game reminds me a lot of this one viking game that I used to play back when I was a kid so I was immediately drawn to your project ^^
(That game had a very similar fighting system but that's all it had) Keep up the great work!!! ^^
An idea would be boss levels of Norse gods. A Thor boss would be pretty cool, and you can obtain Mjolnir. You should also implement dwarf tribes which might grant you better upgrades of weapons. You should maybe add a symbol aura like the Aegishjalmur or the Helm of Awe, for protection spells (have fun making that cause that's really hard).

Thematically I feel that viking mages should be all about Druidic/shamanistic powers. Not the effects per say but the graphism and such. Plenty of already mentioned good idea for the effects. Good job!
I know your channel is only this game so far but please create a play list for it. So much easier then having to go backwards through uploads which will get worst as more videos are released. Really like the way the game appears so far and wish you good luck
can you do an attak for the mages that have a chance to freez the enemy and an archer attak with a chance to bern the enemy (sorry about my bad english)

I think that mages could add a shield ability to one of their allys for 1 turn (if they are low and dont want them to die) but you cannot abuse this and only use it once per raid
The Vikings yeeting at others makes me think of berserkers from viking lore and mythos
If you wanted to add a bit of player thought into combat, you could have a rock-paper-scissors sort of deal. Mages beat warriors (armor doesn't protect against a fireball to the face), warriors beat archers (armor prevents arrows from hurting you), and archers beat mages (low armor leads to surprise porcupine).
I don't know if it's too late to suggest something, but it might be a cool effect to add certain Elder Futhark runes to mages depending on the spells they cast! Especially since each rune has a specific meaning that could change with the action being done (Eg: ᛁ = Ice, ᚲ = Torch, ᛚ = Water, etc). It could be a good place to get inspiration for spells they could cast, too!

Dirty Tricks (Archer Ability): Shoots a poisoned arrow that has a 90% chance to hit the enemy and a 10% chance to hit a fellow viking. The arrow poisons whoever it hits.
Magical Aura (Mage Ability): A spell is casted on a fellow viking. The viking gains 1.5x attack.

Stackable abilities are fun. Eg.
Multi arrow ability
Fire arrow
Ice arrow which freezes enemy.
If you shoot a frozen enemy with a fire arrow, he bursts into flames.
You can have multi fire arrows. Fire + ice can be a water arrow or something etc. Basically Combining abilities for emergent gameplay.
Combining effects is a great idea! Adds another layer of planning and cool side-effects to the fights! Awesome! :D

What if, for varieties sake, there was different classes of mages?
You could have fire mages, who do overtime dmg
Grass mages who have throw boulders and root enemies
Thunder mages who have deal massive dmg
And healing/enchanter mages who are support mages
It could be the staffs that change the class of mage - or its random from each mage viking - or its a class tree that you choose for them and level them up as keep fighting!
Classic mage AOE spell. Does less damage but hits more things on the field.
Arrows can bleed the target, dealing a small amount of damage per turn.
Mages can shield themselves or an ally to grant them temporary resistance to a certain amount of damage which lasts for a few rounds or until the mage is killed.
I think having things like this can help impliment a 'rock paper scissors' type combat style where mages are support/situational, archers are high damage but low health and fighters are low/mid damage but high health.
Perhaps as well mages are very powerful and squishy but have cooldowns on their abilities. Like the shield ability can only be cast once every 2/3 rounds etc.

for the different clans to fight later you can add the various races of Norse mythology such as the giants of jotunheim or specters of helheim and so on with the other 9 worlds

i think mages should not be able to do direct damage but they can make the troops around them stronger, heal them, give them a higher defence etc, whilst they can make the enemy weaker, weaken their defence etc this will ad a cool twist to the tactics of the game!

I kinda like the typical trio of mage elements: Fire is pure single target damage, ice is a little weaker but slows enemies (in a turn-based game I guess chilled enemies might deal less damage instead), and lightning hits multiple enemies but for less damage to each one.

Poisonous cloud (to drain 1 or more hp from all the opponents every turn)
meteor strike
Archer:
Poison arrows
sharp arrows (same as poison, but this one makes the opponent bleed)
Double arrows

I subscribed due to the trader video and am loving the game thus far. Since you are going a magic route, would it be possible to have different magic types? It would be neat if you had to gather bones to make a bone staff to summon a draugr. It doesn’t look like you have a grave site for the fallen. Perhaps you could even introduce the haugbui if you wanted, which is like a draugr, but only stays near its grave site and can be used as protection perhaps? You could also use a similar path, but for a Druid or something. Just some ideas that could be neat while also building in some lore. Also it would be neat to see a slightly different look to the mages than the normal fighters and even between different classes of mages. I can’t wait to see more of your game. Thank you.

For archers, you could add some sort of splinter shot, that hits all targets/ the main target and the adjacent characters for less damage then a normal shot. You could also add a strong-shot/heavy shot, that deals 2x damage, but makes it so your archer cannot attack on its next turn. Another idea is a high level "Barrage" ability, that fires multiple arrows at each target. With mages (this might be a bit too complicated), you could add some sort of mana system. Mages have powerful abilities, but they all cost mana. strong spells deal high damage, but take more mana. You could add in an ability, or an item, that restores mana. Just some thoughts, hope it helps!
I also think adding "prestige" or upgrade classes would be awesome! archers can turn into Wild hunters, gaining the ability to use nature magic to aid them, but you could also choose Ranger, which deals high single target damage, but has less utility then the wild hunter. For mage you could add ice, and fire mages, ice debuffs enemies and deals damage, while fire has strong AOE attacks, but also features abilities that buff allies, like lighting their weapon on fire, or even lighting the Viking themselves on fire, causing them to deal extra damage, but take damage every turn. Warrior could upgrade into berserker, or rogue. Berserker is a tanky, high damage raging Viking, while rogue is a stealth class that has daggers, stealth's if not attacked for a turn, and deals extra damage when it attacks from stealth (they lose stealth if they use a damaging move).
Thats an amazing idea! Would be super cool to specialize them even more!

building upon many ideas that have already been given, a way that you could make a spell or something that empowers other vikings could be by incorporating the fungi Amanita Muscaria, if you don't know this is said to be the mushroom that viking berserkers would make as a basic way of drugging themselves up, or in other words, I think you should add drugs to your game, its historically accurate and you don't have to say that it is a drug, but it would just be funny for people who find out, I don't really know how you would incorporate this effectively maybe have a spell called amanita muscaria idk

There should be different types of staffs and each one will be different with different elements. Like one would be fire with fire blasts. And another would be water with a splash. Even an earth staff.

Maybe Mages should be able to cast shielding spells that add Armor (maybe a shield icon next to the HP bar) for example mage adds 15 Armor to fighter, fighter gets attacked for 20 Damage, only 5 come through and the shield is gone

For mages it could be pretty cool to add magic based on Norse Mythology. For example lighting magic from Thor God. Hod for winter/snow attack. Sif for earth attack. Loki for attack based on deception etc :)

Maybe you should try something like this
Vikings in the front melee/sheilds
Archers in the middle chance for crit
Mages in back for support or Area of attack
Sword and axe attacks are more powerful, but you have a chance of getting hurt yourself, especially if there's still more than one enemy.

mages should do high damage but have a cooldown of 1 turn or longer based on attack
mages should also be able do hit multiple enemies because of aoe attacks
a rain of arrows for the ability
Mage: first ability: You can summon a big fireball that atacks both enemys at ones and costs 2 turns to recharge.. second ability: drains enemys hp and heals an ally Archer: first abilty: an aura of arows that when an enemy attacks you the enemy takes damage too

Air Strike by summoning the dragon. But anyway, does the magic feels a bit odd for Vikings? Maybe the magic-user should be more realistic like preparing explosives, poisons, or biological infection (flees, or bugs damaging crops) or potions that makes warriors invincible, or just by specializing in making beverages and building a brewery.

Give every type of fighter a right to exist. You can make enemy resists or weaknes vs elements. Let the ranges with the bow do elemental arrow damage OR stat decreases/buffs. If ranges do elemental let the caster do the stat thing, or the other way around. Mages elemental and ranges debuff/buff. Would be cool in my opinion :)
Edit: You also can go the always seen "Range Hight single damage, and mage Big AOE damage". I personally think this is getting boring after all the games who choose this way...
