This country gal has always removed her boots on the porch. Half the time they’re mud boots with something way worse than mud on them.
Also, keeping species separated is how to prevent cross contamination and keep viruses from jumping species.
But I’m constantly surprised by how many grown folks refuse to recognize the risk of spreading diseases.

In 1970 my family lived in the Tokyo area for a year. Upon returning to the US, taking shoes off before entering our home became the norm. When I eventually established my own home the no shoes indoors rule continued. It is also house policy with my own adult kids in their homes! Wearing medical masks in public for health reasons has also been a long standing practice in Japan. They are way ahead of the US in many practical ways!

in japan i loved the rule on slipper etiquette especially in restaurants bathrooms and ryokan spas. its the way to preserve cleanliness and i can relax so much. back in the day people HAD to wear shoes. i notice americans dont clean the floor no sweeping OR mopping. i prefer socks or slippers in american homes but slippers in japan were super clean and. floors are cleaned everywhere! i love japan! makes so much sense!

Spending perhaps a third of my life in SE Asia / Japan I am strictly shoes off.
As a person who has always lived in large cities I am shoes off.
As a person who worked in biomedical I am a shoes off.
There are many habits that I have acquired living abroad and one of them was the shoes but another was designated cleaning accoutrement. I have a certain mop and certain sponges and even a different bucket for the bathroom then one would have for the kitchen or other areas. I absolutely cringe if I see someone cleaning with the same mop in both those areas!

As a European I've never understood the American culture of having shoes not just indoors, but many times on the couch as well! It's just disgusting and so unclean to have shoes on indoors!
Another thing about US and A I've never understood is the tipping culture... why should the customer pay the salary of the staff?! In pretty much most of the world the employer pays salary to his staff and not the customers!
And last but not least, the unpaid internships is not something that I would associate with US and A... but more eastern Europe, some parts of Asia and Middle East... but no! Unpaid internships are as American as apple pie!
I just don't get it... just like I don't get the unpaid overtime in Japan even though it's the law in Japan that overtime is paid worktime!

In the UK the middle-upper and upper classes don't remove their shoes, nor ask their guests to. If you've been on a walk in wellies or have muddy shoes, then yes take them off and put on other shoes, but it's seen as extremely rude and a bit lower class to just wander around the house minus shoes or ask guests to. Whenever I've been asked to, it's always been at someone's house who's trying to socially ascend or appear to be.
