As I get older, the joy in my hobbies shift from detailed exploration to appreciation of simplicity. Maybe others just hold on to their passion better? Personally, the best times with my blades are when I get a quick hone and good shave in. Love your finesse on the stone. Happy honing and new year, Keith.
Passion is one thing, detailed exploration is par tor the course. But sub-atomic OCD is another thing entirely.....lol. Thank you for the kind words! Happy Holidaze!
Hi Keith. When you are on the stroke coming towards you are you rolling the blade? It might be just the camera. If you are can you speak to why ? Is it because of the shape of the blade or the width? That’s pretty blade and fun to watch you hone it. You make it look really easy 😀
Hi - I mentioned the rolling stroke and reason for it in the video at some point..it rolls in both directions actually. The blade has a smile so rolling the stroke allows the bevel/apex to make full contact from heel to toe on each pass.
Wow after getting home from visiting family and friends I pour a spiced rum and Dam a Christmas vid from Keith extra special Christmas it is Gratz Keith merry Christmas to you and yours all the best
You know that ain't nothing like sharpening lawn mower blades! It is a good bit of fun. Wonder if at some point you could explain this question? Why do alot of people believe you can stop with just leather , getting around 30 shaves. I know my Grand pop told me they call a strop wet leather! Though I never hear of no one wetting there strop with water. I have done it like that seems like a different shave. Something to do with bevel wear. Just working on it a bit trying to figure it out. Mystery # 324:)
Hi, not really sure what you're asking exactly, about the strops and 30 days. I think your grandfather may have meant "whetting" which is an old term for sharpening....most people would not want to put water on a leather strop because it can dry the hide out and cause cracking. But, lotsa people did lotsa stuff and not all of it makes sense to me so who knows?
ooooo. nice blade mate . he does turn out some really nice work 👍 be interesting to see what finish you decide to bust out on that one. hope you have a great holiday season my friend👌
I agree, you can only nerd out about something for so long. Bottom line is what you personally care about. For knifes, I like knife cutting performance, and Victorinox 3.25" Paring knife or a Rabbit knife are good enough for my EDC cutting for a fixed blade, and a $50-100 knife for a folder, the simpler the steel the better, IE 52100, AEB-L, 12C27, AUS 8, 8CR13 are perfectly fine for me.
Merry Christmas and Happy New year. Hope you were not affected by the blizzard. I hope the edge on your beautiful Yurii razor came out good, and it shaved well?
@@KeithVJohnson1 alright, i'll try then eheh first of all i would like to ask you if you could send me a close up picture of your surgical back arkansas(wet). i would like to compare the surface with mine, not too much of use but i would like to see how it differs and since i know you're very knowledgeable i m sure your stone is in good conditions. basically i am curious to see the surface because mine has some very small defects and would like to see if others also have the same "pattern" i don't know how to say that in a better way, english is not my first language but this is just for personal curiosity not really to compare performances or anything x.x second, i would like to buy a japanese stone in the future. i know what i want based on the way i hone, i prefer stones that are at least 7cm large and about 13/15cm long now, i have the opportunity to buy nagura stones from botan to koma for a good price from friends (like, very very friendly price). how much do you think i should aim to spend for a hard stone with tomo that i am gonna use with naguras counting i don't want to have to use a diamond plate, if i buy one it's gonna be to use it this way and with a size of about 7x13? if you were me what would you do? i don't really care about colors, quarries or anything, just that it's hard and fine. to make it shorter: i would want to do a full progression of naguras from 4/5k synth up to finish with tomo. does it make sense to get the 4 naguras and then aim for the final stone of the above mentioned size? third i am about to get a coticule. i own one that i love, above average hard and fast but way too small to make honing on it enjoyable especially with slurry. i also had the opportunity to try many others from my friends and some i enjoy some i don't and was considering buying a new one. i know veins don't mean too much but from my limited experience the ones from la veinette sold directly by Rob at ardennes were above average and i would have the opportunity to get one from him. in your personal experience, how do you rate the ones that you've owned from that vein because i am considering getting one hoping for about the same performances of the ones i tried. i assume at the moment that's all, i hope i wasn't too annoying
@@leon930 for obvious and some no so obvious reasons I don't review or evaluate stones sold by other people, or from particular veins/strata, or give advice about what to buy, etc. Basically, everyone is different, every stone and honing situation is different, etc. Honing is largely trial and error, try stuff, see what works best. As for my Ark, the pattern is common, but the stone is not; it came from a specific vein that was exhausted quickly while back. There is a photo of it on my website, I don't have plans for another photo session any time soon. FWIW, I have had many Arks with the same pattern; all but 2 were completely different types of stone. A lot of Arks have surfaces that are imperfect under magnification but fine to use. Some of Dan's translucent Arks have small vesicles showing on the surface, they are very common/typical. If the stone works, that's all that matters, I wouldn't be concerned with small imperfections.
Ukranian makers do the same asymetrical shape blades and they are friends! To me and to others they work bot good and price is vey high🎉 But there are people like it!😂 So no problem! If you like the rest will not matter🤐

Simple works best most of the time for me. Simple steel, easy sharpening.
