Knew every word of this album and sang it for years. Didn't know what the MCG was until the internet came along years later. It was tough being a Paul Kelly fan in the states in those days. Viva Paul.
Love Paul Kelly! Especially this classic tune! smells the leaves burning in May [down undah, May = our northern hemisphere month of November)...Paul Kelly!!!!!!!!!!! I'm growing leaps and bounds...........!!!!!!
Paul Kelly is the epitome of being true to your heritage; never wavered from writing songs for and about Australia. I have always admired his brilliance as a songwriter and as a singer of his own songs; he knows his limitations and writes tunes that fit to his ability and limitations as a singer, but also writes songs that are marvellous for other performers. I cannot say that I have a favourtie Paul Kelly song because so many of them are so wonderful, but "Leaps and Bounds" strikes a real chord with me because I have so often seen 'the clock on the silo' as I was walking to the M.C.G. to watch and barrack for my team.
+Mark Henry I USED TO DRINK PISS at the Riverside Hotel under the clocks. I love Richmond. So many memories, good, bad and indifferent.Your summary s accurate, succinct and pertinent.I left Victoria years ago "FROM StKilda 2 kingz-cross...
We remember too Paul! When you could come down Punt Road and see the silo, or in from Richmond station and in the train across to Flinders Street, if you looked back you could. Ah, happy happy days.
Going to the Dome to watch your team is great, but the 'G' is really where it's at. The home of sport in Australia. The worlds greatest sporting venue!
When Melbourne was unspoilt by ridiculous high rises and wasn't so crowded. Will always love my hometown though :) You can take a girl out of Melbourne but you'll never take the Melbourne out of the girl :)
Mark Domney Umm yes Carringbush was used by the Author, Frank Hardy in his book 'Power without Glory' which later was a TV Series. It was about the corruption of the Collingwood Council and shady deals businessman John Wren did and his passion of the Collingwood Football Club, it should be noted that Frank Hardy was a fan of the Fitzroy Football Club (which the Collingwood Football Club was formed from by splitting from it in 1892). Actually I was born and brought up in Bayside Melbourne which you were either a Saint or Demon supporter (I was a Saint Supporter) but have lived in Thornbury, St. Kilda and Coburg. Now the song mentions the MCG in the month of May so chances are (since it was the 1980s) that either the Demons or Tigers would be playing their home game. Knowing Kelly though he did prefer the inner suburbs and I did see him play live a couple of times in 1985/6 when in St. Kilda but he did preferred Cricket over Football and at the about the same time wrote 'From St. Kilda to Kings Cross' which contains the lyrics, "I want to see the sun go down from St Kilda Esplanade Where the beach needs reconstruction, where the palm trees have it hard I'd give you all of Sydney harbour (all that land, all that water) For that one sweet promenade." Again I ask, Why go to Collingwood unless you have to? But you're right - I have no idea.
i was living in townsville in a fruitless relationship i was so confused about what was going on i just wanted to come home to melbourne i asked for a sign anything this song came on the radio the next day i was on a plane back to tulla god i love melbourne

This has and always will be my favourite song of all time. I wish the rest of my generation would agree.

Living in Brissy now, I'm hearin' ya! "And the clock on the silos says 11 degrees" is something that ONLY Melbourne people will get.
Yes :) And as Elvis Costello would say, (Melbourne is alas) "overrun by a Chinese line" now.
Really? What's Melbourne got to do with the Korean war? Or was this just a comment echoing 1990s era Pauline Hanson racism?
apfelprincess45 well said mate
Hoem*
Oh cool. I'm glad someone put the whole version of this up.
I hope they get the clock going again.
Live in the NT, but this song always takes me home......only a matter of time before I'm home again:)

Carn Pies.
+Tamera Connelly He/she said Melbourne was a beautiful city. I doubt if he/she went out to Collingwood. Why would you unless you had to.

Saw Paul live in Dublin about 10 years ago, what an aussie-fest it was, i think every aussie in Dublin was there.

does anyone cruise past the nylex sign and think to themselves. gee decade or two ago paul kelly was making real music on the top of that. ;)
I remember... I remember everything...
Back before that road was a toll road.
Some people say he is Australia's Bob Dylan, but to me,he's,a South Australian Charles Bukowski.Peace.
No one comes close to Paul Kelly...
Always think of football when I hear this song
Well if you want to think of footy, look up Up There Cazaly and then you really will!

My other guess was at the Myer music Bowl.
Just tell me something- They all not moving much. Is it because of the sheer verticle drop probably about two feet away from them?? :)
Good call Carro.
Channel 7 news reported about Nylex sign will be refurbished and done by 2022.. 🤗
Great song. Pity about the clip. Bit embarrassing. I hate Melbourne but still love the song.
