  • How to find the correct height of drain pipe for Oatey no caulk shower drain brass or pvc. For rough in the proper pipe height is required during install for the gasket to seal properly around the pvc drain pipe when you are stubbing it up through. For my garage shower install with concrete slab I did a one piece shower and wanted to share my experience to help you.
amzn.to/3xJ2SLt here you can find some Oatey or similar shower drains.
amzn.to/3VXYK3J here is some 100% silicone for this application.

As for the nut torque value, one plumber suggested tightening by hand and the a half turn with the large channel locks. The silicon will help lock it into place as well.

      Yes I think that’s probably a good estimate. 👍🏻

Great video! I'm stuck with the plastic drain and the instructions say to put the pipe 1/2 inch up inside from the *bottom* of the drain stem. Also, don't let the drain turn as you tighten the nut. You want to crush the silicon gasket material, NOT spread it thinner, which happens when the basket turns. Perhaps have a helper hold it in place with the metal tightening strip while you tighten the nut.

Yes that would help You to have someone keep it from turning. So yours wants the 2inch drain pipe to only be 1/2” up inside from the bottom?

@@SmartEasyDIYer Yes, only 1/2 inch. It's not an Oatey. The rubber compression washer is 1 inch deep and it just reads "UPC" on the drain cap. Doesn't that just mean it complies with the Uniform Plumbing Code? Perhaps I should order a brass Oatey?

@@acreguy3156 I think you’re probably OK that just didn’t seem like a lot, but as long as you follow your manufactures instructions.

Some plumbers recommend adding Teflon tape to the threads, despite the rubber gasket being used. Opinion on that? Many thanks!!

I don’t see that the manufacturer recommends it, but I don’t think it will hurt as long as you don’t put it on too thick.

@@SmartEasyDIYer 👍 thanks. I was thinking three turns of the thinner tape. Don't want to fracture the nut.

    Hi
Would you please let me know the size of the pvc pipe coming thru the drain? What was the hole in your tub?

Why did you use caulk on a “no caulk’ drain.

    • @SmartEasyDIYer
      @SmartEasyDIYer  23 дні тому +1

I used silicone instead of plumbers putty to set the part in the shower itself. The “no caulk” refers to the other part that uses the rubber to seal it up.

@@SmartEasyDIYer I thought the rubber went on the top side of the shower, not the bottom ?

@acenpc the big rubber washer? Yeah, that one goes on the underside.

Your trap arm is too short. It should be a minimum of 2 pipe diameters in length. When it's too short, it will siphon water out of the p-trap causing it to dry out and the ingress of sewer gas.
