This video shows you how I installed a 2" brass drain on my new fiberglass shower pan. I used plumber's putty (check shower pan manufacturer's instructions!) versus silicone to seal the underside top lip of the drain. Gaskets went on under the shower pan in order: thin rubber, paper, then brass nut. Shower pan then went over runner PVC drain coming up from floor, then put the thick rubber on (bevel side up) followed by the brass castle nut. I water tested everything and checked for leaks. Dry and good to go!

This is a GREAT tutorial! ESPECIALLY if it's not a pan is already installed situation.
My pan was installed & I worked with the open ceiling joists above.
Your suggestions caused me to find the CORRECT drain & install it properly with no leaks!
Thank you VERY much. (My Wife truly appreciates being able to shower tonight).

Great diligence and very thorough. You went the extra mile in order to show us that it was leak proof. Up and down the stairs a lot, I'm guessing. Job well done.

Not bad! A little psycho cautious, but better than psyco wet 1st floor ceiling, due to bad sealing.

The under-the-shower-plastic-funnel-to-a-drain-point-in-the-ceiling-underneath-to -help-detect-leaks-without-waiting-for-ceiling-damage is super clever... it is like a shower pan under the shower pan. v2 should just route it to waste as well and never worry about leaks!

Haha, that's an idea! Yes, I was able to sleep a little better with that plastic underneath.

You also need to test with ‘weight’ on the floor plan as if someone is showering to make sure there is no flex around the drain.

That is correct that’s the problem. I’m having with my standup shower right now. When I stand in and move around it leaks through the ceiling.

or you can be crazy like me and simply once your done put water resistant silicone over the gasket. if you buy a good type of sillicone it can last 20 years without mold.

Not every pan will work with putty. It is advisable to read the product installation guide first.

After having installed the drain as you did, I have tested it and never had a failure. There is no need for the test and delaying work for several hours.

Maybe a to test to see if there is too much testing. Then check that test for errors and that should settle it.

Nice. Is this Kohler? What is height of PVC pipe that gasket goes round?

I could not get the drain and ring tight, once it got close to tight the entire unit spun together

Honest question, I’ve never understood why a rubber gasket is not used in place of the plumbers paddy. Could you explain? It seems like it was be easier and would seal that part better.

    • @diybandit
      @diybandit  Рік тому

Great question! It could be that rubber gaskets have a relatively shorter life span than plumber's putty. Or, perhaps plumber's putty, because it is malleable and clay-like, can conform to a variety of variables or install situations. For example, a rubber gasket could be sold with the shower drain, but perhaps it would not conform to the specific fiberglass shower pan I bought and was using it with. But I'm no plumber, so perhaps another viewer can help out.

I've used a brand of kitchen sink drain that uses a foam gasket instead of putty.

Or, better idea, why is the main part of shower base not the male piece that fits INTO the female drain pipe???? This seems like a much better way.

Too much testing. Your second test just increases the chance that you would have a leak. How do you test the reinstall? Do it right as you did and there is little chance of a failure and all the testing is increasing your chances of a leak.

@@diybandit the way its actually done is you can get a test plug or ball and that will close off the drain pipe and you fill the pan with water and monitor the level over a period of 24 hours
