That we subsidize immigrants to do publicly funded research on topics of very narrow interest is troubling. I am glad that this young man has found a research topic that interests him, but this is not something that reasonably brings a lot of value to Quebec.

Many students were made to believe (by whom) that they could automatically apply for permanent residency following their graduation from a Canadian university which was never guaranteed. A visa is not a binding contract. It is an administrative permit issued by the Canadian government. There is no cookbook path to permanent residency in any country, let alone Canada.

I think the professor at the end really needs to define his terms. I think the general notion of "immigrant" is someone from another country who's gone through the difficult work to become a Canadian citizen - and they should have all the rights of a Canadian citizen. Temporary workers, international students, rich off-shore millionaires living here in their mansions on 10-year visas should get fewer rights. For instance, given the crisis level of housing, they shouldn't be able to own Canadian property when most working Canadians are priced out.
