A better design is a small 2 stroke motor spinning a 26" prop so now...no battery needed and you never have to worry about hitting the lower unit on the bottom as it is an air boat. I built a small air boat in the 80's and ran it up and down the Delaware river for years and it was great. You could go up small 4" deep creeks. I may build another one soon after seeing this.
@@kellychase1069 books.google.com/books?id=-dgDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA101&dq=Rocky+Mountain+Airboats&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiFm7WH4sDrAhXHUs0KHRFECdwQ6AEwAXoECAQQAg#v=onepage&q=Rocky%20Mountain%20Airboats&f=false Here is an ad in the 1981 Issue of Popular Mechanics (page 101) for the one I built. It was made from 2 sheets of plywood and powered by a 10 hp lawn mower engine. It went a little over 25 mph. I lam semi-retired now and live in a small apt. and have no where to build something like this anymore. My post above was about using a similar design like KayakDIY did only use a small gas engine and prop on it. It would not take much to propel a kayak. They used to sell engine/prop kits to mount on bicycles and that would adapt easily to a kayak. It will be pretty loud though.
@DinkleDigeroo Ummm...I said I was living on the Delaware river at the time and that is considered to be a navigable waterway and I had no problem registering my boat (and paying the taxes) and no one EVER bothered me. It was much quieter than the jet skis that ran up and down that same river. (I had one of those too) So, please do some research before making such broad statements that you know nothing about. P.S. Those plans I bought for that air boat were sold all over the country for many, many years and I never heard of anyone ever getting into trouble by building and operating one. Please post your evidence that refutes this. Thank you.
I built one 6 yrs ago nobody gave 2 knobs of goat shit then and not trying to down this guys ability but lots of pro kayak companies have refined the idea.
I love how women Inspire us when they say we can do something with stipulations and we do it just to show them that we can and still have a good time doing it. That's awesome.
shes making a play for power first thing i would have done, drill a hole it cause I'm a man in pants with a maketa power drill. and you cant reason with me whose the captain of this vessel?...... dont drill a hole in the BOAT !!? Rubbish!
I did a similar. I used a decapitated sevylor 18lb, rope steering- It was very fun :) A few trips in salt water without proper cleaning afterwards destroyed it tho. Doh!
Now you need a US coast guard pfd , throwable , horn , flares , fire extinguisher , and registration every 4 years ! Sweet job though for thinking and doing at the same time . A simpler version is to mount the motor next to you on a bracket that crosses the cockpit area . It doesn't matter that the motor is on the side it will still handle nicely . And you have full control of speed and direction directly at the tiller .
That tall lever coming off the top of the front of the steering linkage isn't necessary. Just wrap the rope around the steering column at least 3x. ..and, if you put a pin that sticks up proud of the column on both sides, you can change the direction of the wrap and eliminate the crossing of the lines to make it steer straight. The result will be more like power steering action instead of rack and pinion. That's how I used to do it on my coasters (go cart without motor. ..we lived a hill). It works great.. could probably wrap it around the shaft of the motor too and lose that big shin busting yoke too.. Actually, forget the pin in the steering column. I think you could decide which way it will steer by now its wrapped around the shaft of the motor.. ..just some food for thought..
That thing is sweet, in the part of Australia where I live it would have to be registered and carry all the same safety gear as a regular boat. On kayaks we can use an electric trolling motor under 150newtons/ 33.7lbs of thrust without registering it. 30lbs one will be coming my way come bonus time😉
That is an awesome law! This one uses a 30lb thrust motor (link in video description). Here in U.S many states like to suck as much registration money out of people as they can without offering any benefit in return.
Here in NY any motorized vehicle must be registered. Even a canoe with a trolling motor. You must carry life preservers, a visual signal (flag) and audible signal (air-horn or whistle) as well as a 360 degree white light if out after dark.
Adam Kalman Yeah, the music was kind of annoying😕 but I appreciate the coolness of the whole thing and his positivity. I'm working on a hydrofoil kayak. The ultimate

Proud boy Bill for the picnic table are you going to use 55gal drums? That will probably be the most economical means of reliable flotation. Pretty awesome. If you film building it and share video with the KayakDIY channel I will link to you and credit your channel to help jump start your channel. Just an offer. I can’t build everything because I lack the time, but I think my subscribers would love to see that built. I’ve wanted to build one for a long time. There is a picnic table boat on the island near my house. Regardless I will be keeping an eye out for the build. 👍
You my friend should be making this as a kit and selling it , brilliant idea , would not be surprised if you idea could be adapted to most small boats too ,
I don't know what to say except that's wicked awesome! I'd run to Wal-Mart and buy one of those kayaks just to build one, because I have most of that stuff laying around here, as I'm sure most of us do. The only thing stopping me is it has to be registered and here we also have to pay "personal property tax" on top of that. That stinks! The state gets enough of my money already!!!
Wow! Your state really socks it to you. Honestly, I don’t register some of mine unless I’m going on major public waters with powerboats. However, I assume the risk. I think the states over-regulate. I know lots of private ponds/lakes. I saw this project via FB and it totally inspired me to maybe push the envelope of DIY a bit further.
My state squeezes every penny they can out of us to pad politicians pockets. I wouldn't feel so bad if they put that money into roads or schools or something useful, but they don't. The roads are so bad here you can't even hold a cup of coffee in your hand while driving...unless you want to wear it! Then, to make matters worse they just announced a few days ago that the govt. won't be funding the roads any more and we might be going back to gravel. (So much for rebuilding the infrastructure!) Probably 1/3 of the schools have closed in the state and consolidated with others and they are always begging for money. So where does all that personal property tax, vehicle inspection and licensing money go? Toward some politicians summer villa! So I make it a point to avoid registering anything I don't have to. I think any state regulates, simply to keep the cash flow going, because looking around here I can't see one good use of any of that money unless they are paying $1,600 for fountain pens too! This project is awesome and I think we need to see stuff like this once in a while to push our creativity to the next level! That's what DIY is all about!
same here in WV,if kayak or rowboat is human powered no registration or personal property tax.The minute you put a trolling motor on it you pay and register.ABS system that pimps the public while kissing the coal companies ass.
Same here in TN. As far as getting it on the water and avoiding major public waters, TWRA (Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency) are like vultures. Set it in a 2 foot creek and they would find you.
Cool idea. I just hope all those electrical connections are safe in a capsize. I skipped thru part of the video so maybe that was addressed in it. I like the motivation coach at the end.
Here is a possible upgrade option you could work on adding in...... Try mounting a small Solar battery maintainer/charger to the top front of the kayak for added longevity to the battery. Let you rip around the lake all day!
Though this is a nice idea and I would love to add this to my camping rental package for my customers were we rent out fully equipped air conditioned pop up campers fully decked out with alot of extras including 2 ghenoos , Canoos, or kayacks with every rental , aquatic tubes, dive gear, fishing gear, bird & nature watching equipment , hammock, storage tents, portable showers/bathrooms, stove, oven , coffee maker , refrigerator, dining table, two queen sized beds , screened gazebo, full reservations and more, unfortunately anything with a boat motor in Florida comes alot of risk with careless operators damaging the motors in aquatic weeds and sand bars. I would love to offer it however as I believe you have a wonderful idea. I am constantly adding new things to make the camping trips easy for people and this would be a wonderful idea so I wish. I brought up what we offer in our rental package to ask you your thoughts on how we can possibly apply your idea and thoughts to your outstanding idea. Just alot to consider is all on the matter. I have a nice 19 foot wellcraft sport (boat) with 150 hp motor and wireless GPS an anchor that is fully decked out that I would love to include in the camping rental package but again, the motors are a grave concern . The low rates we charge would need to be increased however and we don't want to increase it by alot either as we believe every child and family should be able to go out on fun outings without the heavy cost or worries. I am going to play with your idea to possibly include these in our rental package. Now that you know what we do, do you have any recommendations for us to consider? If we come up with a acceptable idea, Maybe we can exchange a offer if you are in Florida or plan on coming to Florida.
Thanks. Can’t take credit for the creativity. I only edited the video. We agree though....pretty darn sweet. It really did inspire us to see such creativity. Thus, we had to share with viewers.
Great idea...NOW, what do you have to do, to make it legal...obviously it has gone viral. "Do it...just do it. Make your creams come true...right 10/4 buddy, that's a big kayak convoy
How many pulleys do you need for this setup? I got the foot paddle for steering with a trolling motor setup with a battery beneath the kayak, but would like to make this change.
You might want to take a look at the handiwork of UA-cam small project craftsman Paul Elkins. I think he also sells complete plans for some of his projects, including a trolling motor powered miniature electric boat ... ua-cam.com/users/paulwelkinsfeatured
Can you reverse without having to reach back to motor controls? I live in Tucson and have liked kayaks since the 70's. I built one as a woodworking project in HS one year. It was wood frame with canvas. Ive got a fiberglass one thats long and skinny. Its fast and set up like that it would fly. I was looking at a short shaft stern mount with remote foot control for my coleman crawdad for fishing. I think its 50 lb thrust.
I just mount a trolling motor behind me and to the side of the kayak with a 2x4 clamped to the kayak. I steer it with the paddle or reach behind me if I need too.
The relay is a spendy item ... its cheaper to remove the handle/head and extend the wiring to allow you full control of throttle with minimal price and modifications... best of luck to.all looking to do some form of the mod its awesome and I hope to some day do the same type of thing on a pontoon
Definitely could have. There are tons of things I wish in high sight I had done. I designed several little inventions and shared the ideas with viewers. Few ended up being copied and sold on Amazon buy companies. In high sight I could have probably done things differently if I wanted to make money from my invention. However, I just like making videos. My other job I enjoy a lot too.

They can just smell that money, can't they ?!
That's awesome, need some outriggers for stability! Love it.
Bass Dojo not bad idea. Yak Gear style ones would be nice. They double as rod holders when not in use. www.amazon.com/dp/B003Q7UM7A/?tag=ytk-20
Or a PWM would also greatly improve the battery life.
Wow , I would love to do this to my kayak .
Holy Toe-ledo, Batman!!!
I'm from toledo
Amazing!
I love this
I just started the video and already gonna give you a thumbs up 👍
Thanks! Appreciate the support. 🙂👍
Pretty darn sweet!
Where do you get the cables for the steering system ? Has he make a complete kit to buy ? This is great and I would like to do this to my kayak.
great ep
Thanks
Excellent
How many pulleys do you need for this setup? I got the foot paddle for steering with a trolling motor setup with a battery beneath the kayak, but would like to make this change.
What a great idea I'm going to try to do something similar to it I might just go out and build a miniature boat and put a trolling motor on it
You might want to take a look at the handiwork of UA-cam small project craftsman Paul Elkins. I think he also sells complete plans for some of his projects, including a trolling motor powered miniature electric boat ... ua-cam.com/users/paulwelkinsfeatured
guys im the 1,000th like on the video, i keep liking and un liking it and its so satisfying because it goes from 999 to 1K
Do it!! JUST DO IT!!!!!
He needs to patent this and start selling it in stores!
It s simple & fonctional , well thought beau travail ;)
Did that to my tarpon 100 was a blast !
A reversing contactor would give you a reverse option by reversing the battery polarity conection to the motor.
Awesome 😎
I just mount a trolling motor behind me and to the side of the kayak with a 2x4 clamped to the kayak.
I steer it with the paddle or reach behind me if I need too.
Scott McKinney that definitely works too.
Amazing!!!!!
The relay is a spendy item ... its cheaper to remove the handle/head and extend the wiring to allow you full control of throttle with minimal price and modifications... best of luck to.all looking to do some form of the mod its awesome and I hope to some day do the same type of thing on a pontoon
I bet that dude gets all the hens to the yard on his lake 🐴🍻
Hi mate whats the run time on these
Depends entirely on battery you choose and the speed you run.
That is cool
Zoo wee mama!
Genius!
Genius
Wow. I did this 5 years ago. Suppose I shoulda posted it to facebook.
