  • It's time to dig into my cheap (broken) 2014 Jaguar F-Type S. After I got the F-Type back to the shop I got it to turn over, blowing rusty coolant all over the car and the shop. Then after putting the plugs back in it ran great even though it was burning coolant at an insane rate. I was able to drive it around the shop a little bit without so much as a misfire... but now we have to find the coolant problem, and of course it's bad but possibly even a total loss.

    I love using Zip Lock bags when working on a project. I spent seven-years restoring a vintage motorcycle and the only reason I got everything back together correctly was due to labeled baggies of parts and lots of photos!

    When I tear something apart, I put all the parts in numbered one-gallon ice cream buckets that I have numbered 1 though 30. I save those buckets and use them over and over again. That way I know when I'm putting it back together, that I am close to getting the job finished and the buckets get emptied and the sequence that I took the thing apart.

      I did the timing chains on my XJ. Downloaded Jag service manual, bought special tools, job done. Never done a job like that before.

    I think @Samcrac had the same or a similar issue with the supercharger coupler, sounded like the engine was shaking itself to bits, but is apparently a fairly simple fix with stronger aftermarket coupler so it doesn't occur again anytime soon

    @watchjrgo I just did the supercharger service a few months ago on my XKR with the same engine. The plastic box device strapped to the back of the supercharger is called the "symposer" and can be deleted since it only serves to send engine noise into the cabin. Its an unnecessary device for a convertible and gets in the way when reassembling. While you have the supercharger out, replace the coolant line running under the supercharger and all the hard coolant lines that are known to fail over time. The supercharger coupler is a spring loaded coupler that fails overtime and can be replaced with a solid version. The Jag engines are relatively easy to work on since they only require a handful of tools.

    I pulled the engine and trans out of my 1970 Catalina without A/C and thought that was a lot of work. I look at the Jag and wouldn't know where to start. You are a brave man Mr. Ross

    I had 2 mini-heart attacks and a small stroke just watching you rock that thing and pull it off so you can imagine how out of shape I am and what would have happened if I had tried that nonsense. Grats, you're on the way to an new engine.

    I’m looking forward to seeing this engine out, I only just learned that it isn’t the 60 degree 3.0 litre AJV6 like in the S-type and X-type, but a mutated 90 degree V8 with 2 unused cylinders left over at the back of the block. Clever but quirky way to simplify development and save production costs for V8 and V6 options….

      WOW, If that's the case of these engines could you upgrade to a better engine swap and super charger? like a Ford 4.6 or 5.0 Coyote? or would there be compatibility issues?

      @@kineticg apparently people familiar with these cars say the 5.0 V8 and V6 are identical in almost every way aside from the 2 cylinders cut off, people have swapped to the V8 super easily. I believe JR did find the company that makes the wiring harness for that exact swap

      @@Theslipperyseal OK it would seem if possible for less engine weight go with a V6 possibly giving more room in the bay. plus still having strong HP? and for more power, swap in the V8 - very cool! and the upgrades you could add are just amazing!!!

    my original concern would be the actual first problem with the cooling system, there were water pump bearing issues with the early modules though your f-type is the first year, the 5.0 and the 3.0 are basically the same engine minus two cylinders, 5.0 came out in 2010 and the 3.0 in 2013, there have been many water pumps replaced when the cylinder head outlet pipes were leaking, the intake valley will fill with coolant and flow down the front of the engine at the water pump, there are more problems with the plastic outlet pipes than the water pumps, when the outlet pipe fails the rear coolant manifold will drain causing engine temperature sensor one to go dry and the temp gauge will read normal, thus engine overheating, if you remove the outlet pipe, the bottom lip will probably be broken off in the block, you can't replace one with the supercharger on, pulling the head/heads requires special tools but not all of the ones that the factory shop manual says, there are proven shortcuts and there are some things about the timing chain setup that the factory shop manual instructions aren't the best, there are actually only three tools needed, also must consider tappet positions and valve lash, there are aftermarket supercharger nose cone pucks available on line, I've got a factory nose cone assembly that's been run a month sitting around the house somewhere, the 3.0 f-type is fun, 50/50 weight distribution, they came in a 340hp and a 380hp tune, the V8 two wheel drive can be intimidating, R module rules and the discontinued SVR was cool because it made so much beautiful noise, should be a real fun car, don't store it with the top down (causes wrinkles) drop it only when cruising, best of luck

    Talking about supercharger oil changes is giving me bad flashbacks- the stuff reeks after 30k miles! (That was GM's interval on my '04 GTP) Used a turkey baster with a bit of hose taped to it to suck out as much I could.

    Take it out the bottom. My coworker had the engine, trans and front subframe out in 3 hours. It’ll be way easier to do the heads that way.

    4 equally impressive lessons on how to use a pry bar in under 60 seconds... once you were done with the third corner, i still wasn't quite sure what was happening, im glad you sent it home with that fourth corner, i really get the concept of what was going on thanks to that! thank you professor! :salute:

    Ford did NOT build or spec this engine. The AJ series motors are British made engines, which at one point came out of a Ford-owned building in Wales that Jaguar LEASED from Ford until 2020. Jaguar had their own section inside the Bridgend plant in Wales with Jaguar employees. After 2020, they later moved production to a non-Ford plant/building. The engines were always developed by Jaguar engineers and not Ford. This is a very, very common misconception. Remember that Ford sold Jaguar back in 2008, as well.

      He said in a previous video that it was more work and he needed specific tools that he didn’t have to come out the bottom. I still would of thought it was easier to drop the cradle though 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Ford DID NOT build this engine! This V6 is based upon the AJ V8. When Ford bought Jaguar, they walked in the door and discovered that Jaguar had a beautifully designed 32 valve V8 ready for production. Initially, they were going to shelve this design since they had their own 32 valve V8 also ready, but they realized how good the AJ engine was so they simply put it into production. Ford has "tweaked" the design, but the reality is that it is nearly all Jaguar.

    I used to use a mini bolt rack, ili wrote what was what and put them in the rack. Worked great when restoring cars

    I heard him say that He thinks Ford stamped the engine and developed it, but they did not. They did not develop either aj133 or 126 but I think it was manufactured at an older Ford pant in England.

    I know it’s kinda late but if you remove the throttle body and use a index pry bar between the water pump and supercharger it pops out right out

      yes, remove the throttle body, I use a heel bar between bank two cylinder head and supercharger, takes a couple of minutes

    Great progress on the tear down. I love those Jags but after seeing how complex the set up is. I would steer clear of them. I don't think I would have the patience for a job like this,. Enjoy watching though 👍👍👍

    I know Whipple made many superchargers for Ford in the day.
    That said, it wouldn't surprise me if Eaton made some as well.
    At 1 short time, Whipple made a unit for the Ford 3.0l. I could never understand why Ford chose such a thing and not the 4.0l SOHC, I have 0 idea.
    Just my thought.

    It's a Jag - the coupler has to be in backwards.
    You have more confidence than me. I'd have paper stuffed in those intake runners cuz the first chance some rando bolt or debris would find their way down one. Just a law of physics.

    It wouldn't be a Jaguar if something didn't rust or corrode itself onto the engine and not want to be removed. At least it wasn't one of those 5.3 V12's that fused its cylinder heads to the block and caused the engine to be scrapped.

    Ziplock bags do not last as long as they should. All the ziplocks I used when I took apart my 1981 Impala 10 years ago disintegrated so I have no idea where any of the bolt go now.

    Stuff those intakes with paper towel and vacuum up all the loose debris before filming to handle loose hoses. It looked like the garbage wanted to fall in there.

    Why not the engine removed by losing the the subframe and struts, lowering it completely as the engines in the Factory were put in from underneath?

    JR, Why in the hell do they make an engine so complicated? I am old school ... even with a blower on a SB chev a fourth grader can put it together. But this Jag is a science project, I know with the clean air thing, you got to make it clean for the EPA, But Damn .... If I had this Jag all that crap would come out and all the wiring and a SB Chevy would go in and a hot rod wiring harness. And then you would have a fast car and EASY to work on.

    I have an odd question for you. I have a P2542 code - Low Pressure Fuel System Sensor Circuit High has been detected. For the life of me I can't find where this sensor is as its not the fuel rail sensor. Would you happen to know where and how to replace it?

    Just a daft question but why didn't you go online to check which bolts are specific to the supercharger, so it cuts down on your time.
    But you have to admit it's a shame someone drove the miles out of it, but ever thought of using a mid sized fibber mallet to get the sooper off the engine. ??
    So you've got an 'Irish soopercharger' then fitted to your jaguar.

    I have the same model f type on a 15 my, i dont think i have ever seen a f type so neglected as this one you have, who would buy such a car and run it into the ground. They should be jailed for neglect. Can i just say here in the uk i can honestly say I've never heard of the head gaskets being a problem maybe its something to do with the temperature in the usa or bad ownership.

    Common failure on these is the thermostat housing it could have stuck closed and that’s what blue that had gasket

      the most common issue is outlet pipes, only see thermostat failures (leaks at the seam) with high engine temps, not common with wax pellet failures on the 3.0 or 5.0 engines

    So, was it really easier to climb prybar, climb on top of the engine, then rock the it out over using the engine support?

    This is not a Roots blower. They have big lobes kinda like cams. This is a screw style blower.

    I think I might have figured out what the "F" in F-Type stands for... cause that motor is definitely F'd.
