Making M80 clone

  • This is a guide on how to make a thin walled paper tube with flash powder. This is equivalent to what M80s used to be like in the old days. This is actually a little more powerful than that but close none the less. I take a home made paper tube and using cat litter, flash powder, visco fuse, a hammer, wooden dowel, and some tape to make an M80 equivalent firework.

For anyone thinking about making their own, please do your research extensively on how to do everything safely, like using plastic materials to mix supplies to avoid static and what mixtures are impact sensitive and how to safely store supplies, and try to be responsible using such things, away from houses or people to not disturb or not doing damage to property or people, these are what made them illegal to begin with and we don’t need them making supplies illegal or harder to get. I myself don’t make videos about it because I don’t want to inspire a bunch of people into trying something they might be irresponsible with.

Just for the flash powder enthusiasts, if you have trouble getting potassium perchlorate, or deem it too sensitive to mess with, there is an alternate formula I use when making flash powder. 50% potassium nitrate, 30% aluminum powder, and 20% sulphur. I find this to be more stable, and potassium nitrate is easy to get. You can buy it as stump remover at a hardware store. The only thing that you have order online is the aluminum. Also, a few drops of super glue on the clay plug will render it super solid, if you want more compression.

Two Point seven grams is in the ballpark for an M-80 with flash powder they were 2.5 to 3 g . It is much easier to use cardboard end plugs and they work fine with good flash powder. Just cut a 1/16 inch thick cardboard circle from a cereal box or something about 1/4 of an inch wider than the tube you are using and force it through a hole the same diameter as your tube id with a dowel 1/16 of an inch smaller than the id of tube and glue in the ends with elmers glue put them in the same direction you forced them through the hole. P.S. this wont work with BP or the slower flash powders but well mixed KCL04/Al 70/30 will do just fine. this is the way the originals were made back in the good old bad old days of my youth.

that is incorrect if you go pull and read the old army core of engineer books for the recipe it was 69% pot chlor 28% powder alum 3% sulfur (because the m80 was invented by them to simulate life fire for training)and was weighed 3.5g of powder but that was for the military version when they made it a consumer firework the law was 200mcg max powder thats 2g, so the consumer version of a m80 had no more then 2g of flash powder by law

Don't ever mix or store Flash in a plastic bag or use plastic tools (spoon) for handling. Static hazards abound! Use the diapering method, gently mixing the chemicals on a large sheet of Kraft paper. Charge your salute casings with a paper funnel immediately after mixing and use a commercially made paper end cap. Use anti-static spray on yourself and your work area. This video scares the heck out of me. I hope you aren't making any salutes that are bigger than what is shown for the sake of your own safety.

+deepdixie1979 I am not sure if you have ever made flash yourself or not. I have made small batches for a few firecrakers for quite some time now. I have never had an accident, knock on wood, but it sounds like you might have not made it yourself. There is danger in anything that we do, I just happen to know what the risks are and how fun it is watch that pumpkin explode. If you are not a little scared (or respectful) of what you are doing, you probably should not be making fireworks at all.

Rex Morgan Rex, I have been involved in the pyro hobby for many years now, learning about the safety aspects from the professionals in the pyro club I belonged to. So yes, I have made flash before. I'm just looking out for your safety. Don't get all uptight about it. There are just some concrete do's and dont's when it comes to certain materials. Hopefully, you will progress to building more complex fireworks soon. I also started with the most dangerous pyro by building ground salutes years ago and have since moved on to aerial shells and mines.

The comment "I hope you aren't making any salutes that are bigger than what is shown for the sake of your own safety." worries me a little bit as it suggests that salutes in the size shown in the video are not that dangerous. Even under the slightest confinement (or for that matter no confinement if high quality ingredients are used) 3-5 grams of flash powder can result in truly horrific injuries and can easily destroy or amputate a hand. Don't underestimate the damage such items can cause.

This is true. It works best with the tube only half full. Leave some air in there to compress before the tube bursts. Thick as you can find tubes (like from pyrocreations), and glued in end caps works great. Don't use a hot melt glue plug because that becomes a projectile. I haven't seen cat litter vs glued in end plug, but I'm thinking the glued in end plug would hold a lot more pressure. This is a good tutorial ua-cam.com/video/P1sNw70ctfk/v-deo.html

I’m not a pyrotechnic and only know a little about this stuff, so if you want to get into it try you should do a lot of reading.
