Most people don't even like religions there, now.

Thanks for making this one! My grandmother was almost among the Jonestown victims--only the fact that my uncle was entering his senior year of high school and needed support writing his college admissions papers, etc. persuaded her to postpone her plans to follow Jones to Guyana. She was a staunch civil rights activist, and frankly she and many of his followers would LOVE to have been on CIA/FBI watchlists, because that would mean they were making a difference. But, alas, the only thing it was a front for was a narcissistic predator who did a ton of drugs, just not the government issued ones. She lost friends, and a lot of illusions. I can't watch the Casual Criminalist episode--like Bundy it hits too close to home...literally. I grew up just outside of San Francisco . The Peoples Temple moved there when I was just 6 years old. They were only there for a few years, but I remember hearing about nefarious incidents and accusations on the news. Jones got involved in local politics. Someone set fire to their church. Then they moved to this "glorious paradise" in Guiana. All his followers seemed so peaceful. I remember the first haunting images from the helicopter hovering over the bodies on the news. Every time the subject is brought up, I can see that image. I never believed that all those people chose to die. Now you know where the saying , " Don't drink the cool aid. " comes from . It was so easy for people to get swept up in to cults in the 70's. Jones , in S.F. , targeted the poor and struggling, Blacks and Hispanics. He told them of a better life in community and service and then murdered them all. He was a narcissistic megalomaniac .
You comments are accurate and sensitive, thank you. I wonder if some if Jones' radicals set fire to the church to motivate the move to Guyana. After the whole story came out, I cannot put Anything past Jones.
Peter Beter got his doctor of juris from George Washington University and became a practicing attorney in Washington DC. He was involved as general counsel in all sorts of matters in Washington. So he can say he is a Doctor but not a physician.
A person I used to work with, went to Guyana to research a book he was writing. One of Guyana's top exports is bauxite (aluminium ore), they also export railway cargo containers, gold, crude petroleum and rice.
I'm a San Francisco native who was a young adult during the 1970s, and it was a truly bizarre era in which cults of all kinds were everywhere, and crime was rampant (millions of males late teens to early 20s coming of age). I passed the SF Peoples Temple on my way to work and the horrible tragedy that followed plus the assasinations at City Hall later in 1978 left a real pall on the City. No one who lived there then will ever forget it.
Great episode! Between Simon's delivery and the writing this might be the best coverage of conspiracy theories I've ever seen. And I knew a few of these theories but not all of them, always fun to learn to about old conspiracy theories.
The point of MK Ultra was "to determine if a person or group could control the mind of another so completely that they will act against their own self interest, even their sense of self preservation." Suicide bombers/ hijackers, maybe?
Well, it has something to do with kids going into schools with big pieces of metal and plastic they shouldn’t take into those schools and doing things with the metal and plastic that they shouldn’t do.
We always do christmas eve at my in laws, usually at some point a few of us end up in the garage having a drink and taking a smoke break. My father in law (retired air force) came out to have a cigar and cults come up, specifically Jim Jones.. and then my father in law just casually drops his first, bear with me I'm not military and can't recall the term he used.. but its the equivalent to a mini deployment/mission, was to go down and bring all the bodies back from this event. My husband was quite surprised, not once had his dad over the years ever mentioned it. I had that week just watched the Casual Criminalisy on this 😂
Give your Dad a hug and a "Thank yiu fir your service" from me. He helped manage the bodies of my best friend and her brother and their parents. I was 15 years old at the time.
In tue 70’s it was still cardboard punch cards. They didn’t store data (anymore than a note on a piece of paper), they installed data points based on where on the card a square hole was placed.
On 1974 I was a 13 year old in secondary school in Ireland . We had « computer science « once a week where we learned how to prepare the oblong cards with punched out holes for for computers. We never saw the computer which we were told was the size of a room.😂
He touched on it on Brain Blaze not too long ago, but the premise of that video was conspiracy theories that you aren’t supposed to believe, meaning the person who started it was trolling or joking etc. (like the “birds aren’t real” guy) but I genuinely don’t think the person who launched this one was trolling. Maybe I’m wrong, but they seem like they wholeheartedly believe what they’re saying in my opinion, so I’d love to see it covered on this show too, treated like something that (stupid) people really believe. Lady of the Library did a really fantastic deep dive on it when it first emerged. Definitely a different energy than this channel but worth a watch!
Re: MK Ultra, the Behind The Bastards did a great job on it and how absolutely hilarious it was. They accidentally discovered for themselves the best way to get people to do what you want: threats, sex, money...
New subscriber. When I was a child we live down the street from The Peoples Temple (the one that got razed and is now a post office) and we were invited to his church several times. We moved to Livermore Early 78 and watched the news about Jones town on tv. My parents had a couple discussions regarding if we had gone to the church would we have been there. scary stuff. My mom was always (prior to Jonestown tht is) convinced Jones was being persecuted for his marches. I don't know what info was truly out and around SF at the time I was only 8 when jonestown happen but I remember that. it's burned into my memories.
I want to add that saunas are intended to be highly relaxing and that as a ritual should lower cortisol levels as a result. Lower stress has been shown to be good for your health

They didn't even have 8" floppy disks in the 60s. Those were introduced in the early 70s. Hell, IBM only introduced 9-track tape (the big iconic reels you see in tons of movies) in 1964.
Training a cat to do spy work is hilarious, because as a cat owner, you cannot train a cat to do anything other than what she wants to do, such as chasing a lure with a toy bird feather or a hair crunchie! Lol.
I drove a taxi in Brisbane Australia for 15 years night shift, from 2000 onwards and we didn't have to wear a seatbelt because it could be used as a weapon of convenience. It could be used to choke or restrain the driver. It was also for convenience of getting in and out of the taxi to help passengers. The laws have since changed. I have been assaulted and abused and met all kinds of people in all sorts of conditions, but it could also alot of fun sometimes.
that's a job I wouldn't expect many women to be comfortable doing (myself included) - good on you! You're made of sterner stuff than me 😂 taxi night shift might be one of the dodgiest of jobs. My dad did the same in London in the 80s and had a few close calls with crazy passengers too. One benign yet colourful character claimed to be the best pickpocket in the city and would try to tip him in stolen jewelry from time to time.
The fact that you referred to the Black Panther Party as an extremist movement is WILD to me and speaks volumes to how well the FBI pushed propaganda against them
But it was a extreme position from the government position so they aren't lying when being classified as such. What is an extreme position to some is a normal position to others and vice versa.

The C.I.A. has released so much through the Information Act in the past. A lot of this information actually confirms a lot of sketch things it has done. Has even one page been released regarding Jim Jones? A person of interest? Anything? Just asking - I went to high school with Leo Ryan's daughters. Everyone was so devastated for them and also for losing a beloved Senator. One has followed his path into politics.
For whatever reason, my gas bill shows up at the house addressing me as Dr. I have no idea how that happened, but even though I've called 3 times and they say they'll remove it, it's still there.
I think the whole "doctor" thing has to do with PhDs being Doctors (as opposed to physicians). Anyone can lie about having a PhD, and often do, so pose as a Doctor and it may not even be illegal. Not sure about the legality of posing as a physician, although it should be illegal, especially if the poseur hurts someone. There are people in the US clutching their pearls over the fact that PhDs are Doctors, but not necessarily physicians.
It is illegal to pose as a (edit *medical) doctor, lawyer, and most public officials (including cops and firefighters), and probably others. Those are the ones I'm aware of.
It depends. If you’re lying about said credentials and practicing that field or trying to get monetary gain or defraud people or otherwise, then it’s a crime but on the other hand if you’re just at a bar and you’re telling some chick, you’re a doctor that’s a douche bag move but it’s not a crime.
A doctorate is just the highest degree in academics. A juris doctorate is a lawyer. A PhD is a Doctor of Philosophy. I have a doctorate in theology, so I am a doctor. A dentist is a doctor of dental surgery. Indiana Jones was called doctor Jones because he was a doctor of archaeology. A doctor of medicine is the one that gets you in trouble impersonating, but that’s only because practicing medicine without a license is a crime. The vast majority of other doctorates don’t require licensing.
@@almitrahopkins1873 impersonating a lawyer is impersonating an officer of the court. Psychologists are licensed as well. It depends on what the doctorate is in.

Nah. I don’t think it was a setup by the government or CIA this time. If so they did a piss poor job. My mom was a kid when it happened and would always get a wild look on her face whenever it was mentioned.Just watching on TV as a kid gave her PTSD. She’d also talk about the news lady who covered it and how the usually well made up lady with perfect hair looked like she’d been into hell and died in a car crash not long later.
It was probably the kgb. They are the ones who btw started pushing the conspiracy theory that jfk was killed by the cia and mlk by the fbi. Regarding jfk, Oswald literally defected to the Soviet Union, had a Russian wife who was a kgb agent and he was trained by them. People jumping to the conclusion it was the cia is ridiculous because it’s obvious it was the kgb. Khrushchev nearly fainted at the news of jfk. He was certain they would get nuked. The cia covered up the fact they did it to avoid war.
Everyone knows Jonestown was a public example of the CIA's heart attack gun. Jones was harbouring a rebel group of Aliens trying to free us from our Lizard overlords 😂😂
It's so weird when one subject comes up in multiple videos. I realize that the recording of these varies greatly, but in a recent situation room (Warpgraphics), Simon talks about Guiana's military (something he remarks upon in this video) as Venezuela is keen on annexing a portion of their country.
For the US doctor thing, the only people who can rightfully call themselves doctors are either medical doctors, or people who have earned their PhD (which medical doctors often have anyways) since they are called Doctorate degrees as well. Those who call themselves doctors and it isn't medical typically make it easily known they aren't actual medical doctors. Some unqualified people do also call themselves doctors but its not a great lie and really easy to find out. Hopefully this clears it up for any of you out there who don't know this. TLDR: In the US, someone being called a doctor who isnt medically trained is often just a prestigious title from a well-earned degree rather than anything mischievous because it is the highest and most difficult degree you can attain here in the States.
Yup, my sister has her PHd in biochemistry. She could technically call herself doctor, but she never has as it can cause confusion. There’s a lot of people here that don’t understand that super advanced degree can also give that title as it’s a “Doctorate.” Many that could, don’t. I will also note that it causes issues with Psychologists if they call themselves Drs, some can prescribe as they were legitimately trained as a medical doctor that specialized in psychology (slightly different track than psychiatrist, who absolutely are always actual medical doctors), while others just have their Doctorate in Psychology. I’ve come across this confusion as well within the physical rehab/physical therapists too… some are trained med doctors, but many just have a doctorate in some flavor of rehab (I forget the term used.) It’s not a protected title to a strict sense-ie always means a certain level of training. It just says how far people got in Uni.
Listened to the Casual Criminalist episode on a flight back from visiting family for the holidays, this was a good follow-up. It's a rough subject & you all handled it well.
It's definitely more comforting, and easier, to believe it was a conspiracy. Then you don't have to confront that people are very capable to doing terrible things to each other, without the government being involved.
My grandfather was on the clean up crew for jonestown.... he had said they would have to stack the bodies like cord wood. They had to burn coffee by the sack and wear respirators to keep the smell down.
I know that John Oliver already did a great piece on televangelist nonsense, but I would love to see Simon cover that, mainly because I want to see Simon's reaction to some the bonkers s**t that those people actually say
In the States it’s illegal to claim to be a doctor (or any other profession- medical physician, or practice, you’ll end up in prison … Simon you’ve got that confused with PHD, some will fraudulently claim, but if its not rightfully obtained it’s still not recognized… Your a big brain Simon , but you’ve said this once before, hopefully your joking.
However you can get a PhD from unaccredited universities in the US. For example the stupid dissertation by Kent Hovind which means he can call himself a Doctor.
@@onlyalisaawilliams but in the U.K. and many other countries only accredited organisations can grant degrees at all. Anyone else claiming to give degrees is actually breaking the law. I don’t think this is the case in the US is it?
The Jonestown Institute at San Diego State University has the largest collection of information about the Peoples Temple, from beginning to end. The audio recordings from Jonestown are truly wild. I do not think the CIA orchestrated the Jonestown Massacre. However, I do not think it’s unreasonable that it was a side effect of one of their projects. Jim Jones is documented to have been in multiple countries simultaneously and he was deeply involved with CIA and FBI agents on a personal level.

26:06 That's why when you hear anyone debunking conspiracy theories involving the CIA, it's never with, "The CIA would never do this." It’s with, "We would've known about this by now." 😅
14:48 I mean, Henry Kissinger being an evil cyborg does sound about right
Why?
He was a narcissistic megalomaniac .
politics probably got them killed?
Simon definitely has a remarkably comedic and energized delivery here - so much more than I've seen him be on other channels!
Great episode! Between Simon's delivery and the writing this might be the best coverage of conspiracy theories I've ever seen. And I knew a few of these theories but not all of them, always fun to learn to about old conspiracy theories.
Arnaldo great writing that includes some mentions of previous other Simon shows, fantastic!! Thank you for this.
Fact Boy should do a deep dive into VPNs
Lol could you think of a more boring topic
By far the most off the wall DTU episode yet. Kudos to bro Whistler for plodding through this one in an entertaining way!
The point of MK Ultra was "to determine if a person or group could control the mind of another so completely that they will act against their own self interest, even their sense of self preservation."
Suicide bombers/ hijackers, maybe?
Allegedly
Obviously
After MK Ultra you have to wonder what the CIA is doing now for shits and giggles 😮
Robots , I believe the wheels to start the actual terminator movie , have already been put into motion
Virtual reality
You literally just watched a video about a guy who pushed a bill through congress making it much more difficult for the CIA to be so secretive.
Well, it has something to do with kids going into schools with big pieces of metal and plastic they shouldn’t take into those schools and doing things with the metal and plastic that they shouldn’t do.
Isn't it obvious?
Always nice to jump from a CC upload to a DTU episode!
Didn’t realize the dude was a civil rights advocate before he went crazy
In tue 70’s it was still cardboard punch cards. They didn’t store data (anymore than a note on a piece of paper), they installed data points based on where on the card a square hole was placed.
On 1974 I was a 13 year old in secondary school in Ireland . We had « computer science « once a week where we learned how to prepare the oblong cards with punched out holes for for computers.
We never saw the computer which we were told was the size of a room.😂
I hope Simon does a DTU on Ancient Rome wasnt real. Not sure if that got to conspiracy level already but would be fun to tackle hehe.
Pretty sure that he did talk about it on a Brain Blaze a few months back (one about absurd conspiracy theories IIRC)
It isn't tho. Have you seen any pictures or videos from back then? No? There's your answer.
Thanks for all videos S.
You are truely master of these cold reads.
My great uncle is Sidney Gottlieb. I honestly expected his name and MK Ultra to be brought up much sooner than it did.
Auto liked.. Loved the last vid, very interested in this one. Let's go! Friday Night Simon Binge time!
Re: MK Ultra, the Behind The Bastards did a great job on it and how absolutely hilarious it was. They accidentally discovered for themselves the best way to get people to do what you want: threats, sex, money...
Is that something discoverable or simply the main means of manipulation the world over through all time of which no one is naive of?
Perhaps the reason Kool-Aid didn't sue was because, from a marketing perspective, the next best thing to good news is... :D
All I'm going to say, is that the C.I.A. definitely wanted Ryan dead. I have no idea about Jones.
The parent company of Kool Aid is Kraft Heinz, apparently. I don't know why I cared enough to google it, but now the rest of you don't have to.
The rest of us weren't going to my friend
Conspiracy Theoriests: Jones Town was running CIA Wildcat Mind Control Experiments!
CIA Agent 1: "Wait, have we tried Wildcat Mind Control?"
CIA Agent 2: "Not yet, but we added it to the list."
Please never stop the “McUltra!”🥺It’s too funny to forget(sry Simon😂)
I love Simon's optimism.
True, soo elegant
How about eliminating taxes altogether instead of worrying who isn't paying them. We can't even get Amazon to pay any taxes up in this place.
They didn't even have 8" floppy disks in the 60s. Those were introduced in the early 70s. Hell, IBM only introduced 9-track tape (the big iconic reels you see in tons of movies) in 1964.
Ahhh another Whistlerverse video, time to sit back and enjoy.
Training a cat to do spy work is hilarious, because as a cat owner, you cannot train a cat to do anything other than what she wants to do, such as chasing a lure with a toy bird feather or a hair crunchie! Lol.
Simon’s dulcet tones are the soundtrack to my cooking of the Sunday dinner, love them all! Bring on the next situation room
A+ video!
Excellent topic and analysis!
It always giggles me up how many people try to claim to be Green Berets in the past and have NO idea what GB's even do.
Not sure which channel would be most appropriate but I would like to hear Simon discuss Budd Dwyer.
Do some research, all for equality but there were some extremist views…and actions
@@dennisloseelol buddy I’m the grandson of 4 black panthers. I got the real story from the horses mouth and not just revisionist history told by the victors

I love British/Simon's humor, yes starting every video with, let us pray. Would be quite excellent, I might go as far and say suburb sir. 10/10 would sub and like every video with that.
Fun fact the best way The C.I.A. has found to actually get people to do what they want is to get the person's kid into a top tier U.S college.
The McUltra is absolutely the worst item on the McDonalds secret menu
The C.I.A. has released so much through the Information Act in the past.
Cancer in the brain, lungs, stomach, and colon? There's an easy cure, Simon. Let me tell you about... saunas!
Me, 3 aeconds in after reading the title "no.... Thats a firm no. But im open to conspiracy theories so I'll still watch"
It depends on what the doctorate is in.
its also commonly used by people with fake PhD's.
Happy new year Simon.🎉🎉
Crazy stuff , this.
I had assumed people said Kool aid because there is basically no well know alternatives. I didnt think they ment literal kool aid bran. I assume thinking it was literal was atkeast some what common since they clarification was made. Very interesting on top of the rest of the video.
How many channels does he have i need a list 👍🏾
The sound is a bit off on this one? Sounds kinda scratchy and like its coming out old speakers?
It sounds off to me too, like a microphone being peaked.
Just left the same comment! Raspy, boomy and scratchy. Not in the ad read though.
I'm getting that, too.
Causal Criminalist? Great idea for Simons next channel!😊😊
I love the Whistler cinematic universe
Whistlers, assemble!
I knew I wasn't hallucinating! This was uploaded
How about a video about Heavens Gate? Lots of aliens and other fun stuff. Well, except for the end...
Yall should do just CIA debunking next
Jim Jones first church was down the street from my family home and my dad wrote the articles that caused him to move from Indy to San Francisco
This is a lot of sidebar commentary 😃 I wanna hear the conspiracy stuff
Nah. I don’t think it was a setup by the government or CIA this time. If so they did a piss poor job. My mom was a kid when it happened and would always get a wild look on her face whenever it was mentioned.Just watching on TV as a kid gave her PTSD. She’d also talk about the news lady who covered it and how the usually well made up lady with perfect hair looked like she’d been into hell and died in a car crash not long later.
how else would such a thing persist openly without any others stopping it?
it matches the crap the cia participated in at the time.
Conspiracy, Simon doesn't think old people are people at all.
McDonald's worker: Hi welcome to McDonald's. What can I get for you?
Simon: Hi, I would like a McUltra meal please 😂
It's on the secret menu.
I've just come back to these channels after quitting when Simon was supposedly no longer hosting. What did I miss?
It's so weird when one subject comes up in multiple videos.
I realize that the recording of these varies greatly, but in a recent situation room (Warpgraphics), Simon talks about Guiana's military (something he remarks upon in this video) as Venezuela is keen on annexing a portion of their country.
More than one thing can happen in a place, that’s how time and causality works.

“Whatever it is you’ll be filling it with misery” solid gold! Lmao
I’ve come across this confusion as well within the physical rehab/physical therapists too… some are trained med doctors, but many just have a doctorate in some flavor of rehab (I forget the term used.)
It’s not a protected title to a strict sense-ie always means a certain level of training. It just says how far people got in Uni.
He's talking about legally I think, not 'rightfully'. It's not illegal in the US for anyone to claim they are 'doctors'.
Listened to the Casual Criminalist episode on a flight back from visiting family for the holidays, this was a good follow-up. It's a rough subject & you all handled it well.
Whenever i hear a cia conspiracy theory im like "the cia has done some fucked up and concerning shit. That though, is not one of them"
Yeah, there's no doubt about the fact that the CIA has done and is doing awful things, it's just not these specific ones
Sawdust is the best ingredient for food AKA rice crispy treats.... Lol😂😂😂😂
I want to play Dungeons and Dragons with Simon , he would have me crying laughing ,
I appreciate how Simon describes his stories as "deep lore".
I know that John Oliver already did a great piece on televangelist nonsense, but I would love to see Simon cover that, mainly because I want to see Simon's reaction to some the bonkers s**t that those people actually say
I'm a Christian, and televangelists make me cringe. I've watched a few with my Bible in my hand and have wondered if they're reading the same book.
Mr. Whistler has a voice smooth as butter. He is hard working Genuine and down to earth. I wish he were my neighbour.
@@molybdomancer195, and those aren’t recognized/diploma mills.
