  • Our friend Chris sent us some rare wild fish from Venezuela and West Africa. The El Tigre Endler is a wild type fish from the El Tigre River in Venezuela and the Pelvachromis Sacrimontis is an even rarer dwarf cichlid kribensis from Nigeria in West Africa. Excited to have these new strains in the Fish Cave!

      Just watched it, good stuff! I live far up north, right on lake ontario, so I have to pick my seasons, but I think I'll take a net out next spring and see what I can find.

    Oh.... and a tip for all beginning Pelvicachromis breeders. They like warm water 78 to 84 fro breeding and they like to deposit their eggs in some sort of cave. I usually use an upside down 4" flower pot with an opening chipped out or drilled through the side. Both parents should be able to enter the cave at the same time. When it comes to sexing the juveniles, the best way to do it is to look at the pelvic fins (homologous to our legs). The female's are rounded and the male's are longer and pointed. This method allows you to accurately sex them at about an inch to an inch and a half. As adults the sexes are very different. There are a number of Pelvicachromis that come with a collection location attached to their name. These fish should not be crossed with other populations even if they are the same species. The goal is to keep the populations pure. Sometimes different populations end up being classified as different species and If a habitat restoration ever needs stock it is best to be able to restock with the same fish that originally lived in that habitat. The Pelvicachromis sacrimontis in this video are from the Azumini river in Nigeria. As a breeder I always attach that name so that hobbyists know to keep them separate from other Pelvicachromis sacrimontis.
    Cheers,
    Chris

    "Wild rare fish" are often species in danger of extinction, don't buy "wild rare 🐠 "!

    • @WildFishTanks
      @WildFishTanks  3 роки тому +1

      Very good point. These are rare in the aquarium hobby, not necessarily rare in the wild. They are also “wild type” strains of fish but were bred by my friend in his fish room so we’re not taken from the wild

    • @Cgraseck
      @Cgraseck 3 роки тому

      Sandu, While I agree with you, in this case the Pelvicachromis sacrimontis are actually part of the CARES program. CARES is a program where hobbyists breed and maintain species that are rare in the hobby and sometimes in nature too. Many freshwater tropicals suffer not from over collection but from total habitat annihilation. A good example of what hobbyists can do is the recent habitat restoration and reintroduction of Zoogoneticus tequila. The habitat of this fish was destroyed to make a public swimming pool. The only reason the fish still exists is that hobbyists kept it going in captivity.
      Cheers,
      Chris

      I agree with you guys, I knew that, where I see a problem is the massage, especially when we have a big chanel, a big influence, I mean, just few understand, 95% will understand that's cool to collect "rare wild fish" and those fish mostly will die in a short term in a tank that is not appropriate because this rare fish often have special needs and the owner must have special knowledge that few of us have.
      So like that we take a risk to contribute to the extinction of some species. Peace ✌️
