would love a dedicated dulens vid, there’s sooo little information on them online besides pure specs.

Pretty sure it’s been tough to get proper full tests since a lot of owners were waiting for the 31mm. They’ve been on crazy back order for months. I’m hoping to get lens tests up soon for people to check out once I get my 31mm in.

Looking to get my hands on some of the Dulens Vintage "look" lenses. Very well priced and from what I can see they render a great looking image.

Looks like currently a 43 and 85 in stock at BH if you wanted to try them out.

great selection! Really impressed how sharp the viltrox are, but again, cheap blue-looking flare, and I can see a bit of C.A and ugly bokeh. Once again, cooke optical performance and look is on a different level! How would you compare the vespid with the dulens?

Got a chance to handle viltrox, physical build quality wasn’t very impressive in my opinion. Dulens on the other hand blew me away

How do you feel about the Sigma Classic set? And also, do you consider the Mercury Atlas a modern vintage?

Technically I would say the sigma classics fall here, however their elements are practically uncoated to achieve their look which all vintage lenses were never uncoated from the factory so I don’t think you’d get a lot of the vintage look minus a lack of contrast. In terms of the mercury, I’m not a big fan after seeing CVP’s video. I’d say they are intended to look vintage but with way too much distortion and lack of sharpness throughout the image; personally I’d say they are borderline unusable for any practical shooting if you want to stay in FF modes.

@@NorthwestCameraCo Do you mean a deliberately artificial distortion cushion, specially laid by engineers? Or are you not a fan of 1.5 x?

@@onlinetraderucom no the ff 1.5x lenses have more distortion than most vintage 2x options if you were to expand the image circle past s35. For example the viltrox have an insane amount of performance at 1.33x. 1.5 is a great squeeze factor and we love our aivascopes. But 1.5 isn’t that much more than 1.3x so there’s no reason the mercury series should perform as bad as it does. Could have been a home run if they only had a mild amount of barrel distortion vs loads of it. Not to mention how poor the sharpness circle is on the mercury in FF mode. I’ve tried to analyze a ton of shots online and best I can figure is maybe a 20% of image is sharp at any given time.

@@NorthwestCameraCo Interesting opinion. Most people think that the more character an anamorphic lens has, the better. Vintage character is considered even big problems with sharpness. Probably the rejection of sharpness and excessive distortion of Mercury is a marketing ploy designed for a large audience of amateur filmmakers brought up by UA-cam. Probably the filmmakers who shoot content for streaming services are not their customers.

@@onlinetraderucom Im a massive fan of character however there is a line where so much of it starts to mean less use cases for the lens. In the case of the mercury, the barrel distortion is so bad out past s35 that long leading lines like the horizon start to curl upwards so much that it looks like the world is starting to turn on itself like in "Inception". That one thing alone makes shooting scenarios fairly limiting. That mixed with a large lack of overall sharpness of the focus area, pretty much means, you will need to shoot all lines perpendicular to camera and almost center frame everything. To me that becomes very limiting in a creative approach. Hoping they improve them once they start delivering, but after seeing some good tests, the only real use I would see for them personally is if you were shooting some sort of drug trip scene where actual reality needs to feel very altered. But there is no shortage of great lenses coming out, so excited to see options in the future from other manufacturers.
