  • Tim Riley with the Southmen Quartet. March 21, 2008 in Boaz, AL. Sorry for the two part video. I was having battery issues. The 2nd part has the real low notes, as only Tim Riley can do.

    Speaking as someone who grew up in a southern gospel family....
    I never appreciated bass until I heard Tim.
    His notes are so profoundly clear and distinct.
    He never muddles the sound of the group but gives them a rock solid base on which to build.
    I met Mr Riley after a show one night and you could indeed hear and understand all he said without any problem... from a good distance away!
    He may not be the lowest.
    He may not be the best
    But his voice is a gift from God and I'm thankful he's shared it with us.

      They get lower than Tim, but not by much! And they surely don’t get no better!

    Now guys...listen to the videos..."Tim Riley-Best Bass Singer Ever" and then type in "Tim Riley-Best Bass Singer Ever part 2" and you'll hear SEVERAL low notes by this gentleman when he was in his prime! Son...it's incredible...there may be some who sing lower, but no one singers as low as Tim and yet sounds soooo strong...only russian basses can come close to that resonance!

    Very true. It was said best that JD Sumner's slider didn't know when to stop. He wasn't a singer. He was just there to see how low he could get. Big Chief was a good bass singer. I had heard all my life that he was the best and when I heard him, I was like "what?" I was expecting a big boomy voice. He was the best in his day. Tim's a good bass. George was the best.

    I think the reason bass notes get confusing to our hearing is that often a bass not has a fundamental, but the 1st or 2nd overtone overpowers our audio judgment. So you tenors who think you hit this note probably don't realize your brain has zeroed in on the 1st or 2nd overtone of this man's singing, instead of the fundamental. It's extremely unlikely you are hitting the fundamental.

    it would be nice to hear Tim Storms sing this.

    One of the things that sets Tim apart is the rich tones that are palatable to the ear, coupled with the fact that he can knock the bottom out of whatever key he is in. Sure JD had the lowest octave but he sounded extremely nasally.

    @Embrikkkk i concur with your statement except that Vladimir Miller isn't a basso profundo he's a Oktavist. Oktavist's are lower and deeper than Basso Profundo's.

  • @markcash

    I agree that JD could probably hit lower notes than anyone, but I personally think there were better all around bass singers. Tim is a good one, but my vote would have to go to London Parris. Check out some of the videos that I posted from the GOGR of The Rebels Quartet.

    hahah good bass:) he have 2 octaves down than normal:)

  • @Jouwl
    @Jouwl 15 років тому

    Fine, perhaps not a tenor, but a high baritone then.
    I don't care if Riley can fry notes down to a C1 or not, but I am a low baritone, and Riley's G1 is a tad weaker than my own G2, meaning his chest voice is somewhere around 1 octave below a high baritone, or a low tenor.

  • @ejayrichard
    @ejayrichard 15 років тому

    ha ha ha
    Rex Nelon is still the Best Bass singer for me! :)

  • @Jouwl
    @Jouwl 15 років тому

    I don't care what one octave below a tenor is called, but the notes Riley sings on this video is roughly one octave below a tenor.
    Because:
    At least some tenors can sing a G2, perhaps weakly, but still. Riley sings a G1. There is one octave between these two.
    So you sir, fail at internet.

  • @BamaMTA04
    @BamaMTA04  15 років тому

    Hendrick...Tim Riley also learned from the same man that taught London Parris how to get the most bass resonance - Leroy Abernathy. Tim has in turn begun to teach Aaron McCune the same technique. In my opinion, he is already way ahead of Tim Duncan. Tim has the benefit of a good PR department with the Gaithers, but Aaron is a better raw talent and will eventually leave Timmy in the dust.

    Whoever thinks this is best bass singer ever needs to listen to some recordings of "Big" Jim Waits, the Big Chief, and early J D Sumner. Tim Riley's not even close.

  • @BamaMTA04
    @BamaMTA04  16 років тому

    Not sure about Jim Waits and I've only heard a few older recordings of The Chief. However JD was only low, his voice quality wasn't as clear and crisp at Tim's. After an F1, anything any lower is just silly and that's all JD ever did. He also usually did it where it didn't fit...forced the song to stop and slid down to it. He was a great talent, but not nearly my favorite.

    I like his bass singing but he is not the best!

    Rex Nelon is my favorite

    @ejayrichard I can hit most notes on this part (I'm a bass though) and its not good when I do it lol (vocal fry on most) I'm sorry but no tenor can possibly hit those notes... now I dare you to listen to part two and say that you can hit those!

    wrong bass is the lowest tenors can be basses and maybe sing g2 but a tenor usually sings at least 5 steps up from a bass g2 is usually one of the lowest notes for a BASS which is LOWER than a Tenor a DROP BASS can sing even lower and this guy is able to sing F1 comfortably you need to learn alot about music i have taken classes and i know what im talking about

  • @gospelmusiclover48

  • @revskull

    "additives"?? your vocabulary shows that you don't know exactly what you you're talking about..and while there are alot of vocoders and vocalizers with great voice correction out there, they work best on single notes, and would'nt track fast enough to be undetectable during his singing... as someone who knows these products, i can promise you there not being used here, and it would never be in the microphone......
