I was stubborn and wouldn’t give up my 250 fps Horton until around 6 years ago I had multiple deer jump and get spined, I went to a killer instinct hero 380 and now I have a wicked ridge Blackhawk 360, in my opinion 350 fps should be around the minimum fps nowadays, you have basically no time for the deer to jump at 25 and under yards with 350 fps, glad you are considering switching permanently! Modern technology has come a long way
I almost quit hunting after a couple of "bad shots" and PM'd you, not even expecting a response. You gave me tips and encouragement that greatly improved my results and kept me in the sport. Since then, I have had the joy of sharing what I harvest with others, introducing them to hunting, and always telling them to subscribe to DBB! I appreciate the entertaining, instructional, and honest content Sir!
RICH, remember if you use the faster bow, you will be tempted to take longer shots. If you don't aim low, the same thing will happen. Don't expect a different outcome in that case. Your my favorite prosecutor, and I enjoyed the fact that you shot a recurve bow. REV X
I empathize with you Rich, sorry you had to go through that. I used to hunt with a recurve bow, instictive shooting. Loved it, and miss it to this day. But I had a doe at 9 yards perfectly broad side and I hit her too far back and had to listen to her bawling out in the swamp for an hour from the pain I inflicted on her. No blood, no recovery. I had thousands of practice shots and many successful kills under my belt too, I was a really good shot. But that one bad shot, all because I wasn't using sights, and it crushed me hearing her pain, and I promised myself right there and then I will always use the most effective equipment legal for the season. So here I am with a crossbow and Oracle X scope now 20 years later. I'm due for a bow upgrade, too, since there are better bows available and I committed to using the best proven tech available. But at least you have made the commitment now, it will be easier on your soul next year, no mental battle on what you are going to use. All the best to you.
Rich I have always appreciated your honesty in your channel. you would NEVER see a shot like that make the Final Cut on a "big name" staged sponsored hunting channel that has 25 "brought to you by" rattled off at the beginning of the show. I have learned much from you over the years and enjoy your books. Thanks again for all you do!
I appreciate your honesty. Your experience here was mine with a vertical bow to the point where I stopped archery hunting. A friend convinced me to move to a crossbow. Best hunting equipment purchase I have ever made.
Sorry about the deer, Rich. We work so hard to take these beautiful creatures as quickly and respectfully as possible, it's frustrating when it doesn't go our way. Great video, looking forward to part 2!
I really like the frequent vlogs you have been doing this season. I enjoy the rants as well lol. Congrats on the deer and hope for more to come this season.
First time watching one of your videos not sure how I even got here. your hunting methods and mine could not be farther apart, no bait allowed in my state and I hunt with a longbow. But from what I can tell from watching one video of yours is, that you are passionate and you care for the animals you are harvesting so respect sir.
Thank you for being honest with your rant man. I understand and truly appreciate your concern for the deer. I’m the same way which is why I upgraded my bow, arrows, broadheads, the whole 9yds. Keep up the great content
Great recovery, Rick! It's hard to remember to aim low. But I believe one should aim for the heart every time with archery equipment. They are so fast, and I believe in a quiet situation, they here that arrow. Let's both get that new excaliber Rev X!
congratulations on your 2nd doe. I canunderstand that feeling but your intent is pure. I think seein gthe pieball squirrel is cool. That is what sitting inthe stand is about. What you see just taking in mother nature.
I have seen a bunch of your videos but this one made me subscribe and comment. The reflection of the ethical kill, really important. Thanks for your honesty.
Always excited to see a new upload from you, especially during hunting season. Your videos are always really crisp and look great. I can see your point about the crossbow and faster ones. It’s never good to see that but you were really fast recooking and like you said it was fast.
I know we can’t stand to see an animal suffer. Props to you getting off that second arrow quickly. I myself have not had to deal with that yet. I just started using compound only because I wanted to try something new and get into it in the off season. I can only hope my patience is at its best potential the day I come in contact. Hard to watch an animal suffer, especially when you are the one behind it. Ahhhh wish me luck, this was eye opening.
love the videos rich! It happens buddy all of us who have hunted long enough have experienced it and it's a bad feeling. But nothing you could of helped. You made a quick kill and she didnt suffer long. Thanks for the quality content!
I totally agree with changing with the times. There was a time when I also used a slower crossbow and I literally remember when I started aiming lower and getting good shots in. But I was like you I needed faster to get there before point of impact changed because of deer moving.
Grats for your second deer. For us its mission success. Moose at 20 yard he when down 30 yards away. The rage 2.3 on a 450 grain arrow at 390 fps did exactly what it was supposed to do. Good luck to you for the rest of your trip.
And also I literally just had this talk with someone else about the fawns and I think they will be fine. It’s all part of nature. And at that level of deer coming in that’s crazy to me.
I have two new crossbows to replace my older Barnett reverse curve 340 fps. I bought a Barnett 385, had limb issues my first trip to the blind. One splintered, warranty covered it but in the meantime I made a momentous change to a Mission Sub I XR at over 400 fps. Great success, superb tool with great options. With the Barnett 385 repaired I hope to harvest a deer this season with it. The fact is that both new crossbows are fast and accurate shooting extremely tight groups out to 50 yards with a flat trajectory. The Barnett’s both have an advantage of being light and compact for restricted movement from limited space in stands or blinds. The Mission crossbow is a precision tool meant to last a lifetime.
Hunted with the Swat X1 last year...there is no comparison. I cannot see going back to my old Horton I hunted with for 15 yrs. Had way to many shots not pass thru. Every shot last year with Swat X1 passed clean thru and recovered every deer. Had a record year.
Time to get that Ravin restrung and give her a go in the stand, I think you will really like her! I know a lighted noc is a must for you and you can do it with the Ravin! I build mine from zombie Slayers with an aluminum nock insert and have no issues with extinguishing the luminox any longer.
Good video👍🏻🎉 You definitely proved a point. But also don’t forget about the Joul (kinetic energy) as slower it gets as faster the energy drops I think 200-300fps is more for 5-20 yards. Don’t throw away your old crossbow ❤
I don’t practice enough yet I do make good shots 90 percent of the time. Buck fever with a tendency to rush the shot is my problem. My only excuse is that I hunt in highly vegetated woodlands that offer a very short window of opportunity to take the shot. I shall endeavor to persevere to improve my technic by breathing before I release the bolt I’ve discovered does help.
Hey Rich Bungie still got the job done and spine shots do drop deer where they stand so no tracking & chasing required! According to our son Ron Jr, roundabouts are more efficient & safer than four way stops! Another have many north of Atlanta where he lives. And I like these BLOGS! Can’t wait to see you take some deer with the SWAT X1 and the RAVIN R29!!
I’ve hunted with compound and crossbow and you are right, the concessions I make during compound hunting I wouldn’t dream of when I’m hunting crossbow. BUT it’s still archery, and it’s not supposed to be automatic like rifle is, that’s why the season is longer.
Love the vlogs and voices. 100% right times have changed and we've evolved it is not the 80's anymore. Deer have evolved. You need to change it up sometimes. Is it always better? In a roundabout way it may be( pun intended and yes we have them) however turning corners is not that difficult! Warranties have DEFINITELY changed in a roundabout way all they seem to do is cut corners! Good luck shoot straight and shoot often.🦌
I recently purchased a tenpoint venom x a month or so ago so I could take my nephew out for the youth hunt then use it myself the first couple weeks of archery here in Michigan. Had shoulder surgery a few months back and my muscles in my shoulder are all bound it. (Frozen shoulder) unfortunately my nephew missed a doe and missed opurunuty at a buck first day of youth season due to us not heading out.
I enjoy your channel and I appreciate all of the information you provided about crossbow hunting. Given the rampant CWD spread in MD, I'd respectfully ask you to reconsider hunting over bait and especially reconsider posting videos of hunting over bait.
I'm sorry you're having issues with spining on the OB, but I kinda figured it was going to be an issue eventually, because you're right, the deer have adapted to the faster speeds.
Some people change things for the better and some people change things for the worst.Question: How much faster would O.B go with a dragon claw arrow and a 100 grain swhacker?Question: How much less time would it take the arrow to get there?Question: How much less or a distance would that deer move towards the ground? Appreciate your honest video,we love them all.😊
Done videos and wrote a book about this topic. Short answer is OB cannot do what a modern crossbow can do. Two different weapons. Use a modern crossbow.
No problem with your kill. Grant Woods always talks about aiming low to anticipate a drop. He is usually shooting compound bow, less than 300fps. Maybe something to think about with the OB?
Yeah I can’t argue with your logic. I had the option of the axiom or the eclipse. I wanted the higher draw weight not for speed but for power. It’s amazing what 25 extra pounds of draw does. The axiom is good don’t get me wrong you got many kills a few pass throughs but as archers we need it more often than not. Hey at least this one didn’t go far either right and your were able to do a follow up. So that’s great but no we do not want that on a regular. Lots of great points you make too.
I hate round about parking lots! Control for mice in mazes. Like the voice! Keep the great videos coming. Two weeks and I’m in a stand, sanctuary! Mix it up and keep the deer guessing became there are more hunters in the woods. The sale of merchandise at all the hunting stores is proof.
Rich you ought to get a Hecs suit under that scentloc camo. You’ll have the scent and magnetic fields covered 😂. Seriously though, keep rockin with the vids. Enjoying it 👍🏻.
I’m always amazed at how quickly a doe can drop to lunge away by the time the bolt arrives. I too have made too many high and back shots on does. I’ve also upgraded to a faster crossbow for improved speed and accuracy but the key will be for me to aim lower, knowing that deer will still hear the crossbow 1/2 second before that bolt arrives at still drop 4-8 inches.
Hey Rich, love your channel! However, I really hate to see you get so discouraged with your excalibur! It has been such a reliable piece of equipment! I wonder how many times I have heard you say " I love this crossbow". I shoot a vortex excalibur. It shoots around 330 fps, probably more like 300 fps in reality. It is such a reliable bow! Never had a problem with it! Even when I break it down for the off season, and reassemble it, I usually don't have to zero. It is always spot on. It is slower than the newbies. Technology has out run it. However, I am completely confident with this bow in hand. Watched you shoot completely over the back of a deer at 40 yds with bungee #2. A crossbow that is rate over 400 fps. I always go for the heartshot with my bow and I am rarely ever disappointed. I am extremely confident at 30-35 yds. Watching a deer and interpretting their body language helps a lot when taking the shot. We both know that these bows are not guns. They are not instantaneous! Your original bungee is a great bow! It has served you well. Remember why you love that bow so much. Besides, you have already had to pick that bow back up and use it due to mechanical problems with the newbie!
Traffic circles on familiar roads are great but can be confusing in unfamiliar areas. Maybe the doe wouldn't have been able to drop as far with her head up instead of down? The vlogs are great! One question: Are we ever or how can listen to Yankee Malitia again?
Thats still plenty of speed, but you need to put on something like a QAD fixed blade. I think your dissipating too much energy just to deploy the blades. And yeah, gotta make those closer shots within 20 yards
Lmao on the vlog. And we call them circles in Jersey. Work good as long as everybody knows how to use em. Now this doe I’d like to see a shot analysis on. Kinda look like a little drop and maybe a little high shot also. Idk 🤷♂️
Hi Rich...I was thinking this today how it would be nice for a change in crossbows anyway so my question to you sir is I've been really considering the Swat X1. I ve seen yourself and a few other really enjoying them and they look like a fun crossbow to shoot. Love the simplicity of the excaliber but I think for next year I want to upgrade. From the research I've done one of the most important things to me is the best bang for your buck ...they have had limb issues just like Excalibur has in the past...does KI have those issues behind them now. What is your true honest opinion of upgrading to one?
I'm not so sure a faster bow would have made much of a difference. You almost missed her completely. An inch or two lower still means a spine hit. Granted, I'm watching this on a cellphone and can't break down the shot frame by frame. But, from what I can see in the slowed down footage, a faster bow wouldn't have helped you at all.
You are killin me with the suspense of the swat x1. I’ve been following your channel for a bit now and really like the idea of owning a swat x1. However, with the issues I’ve heard of with them, I’ve been following you and another UA-camr waiting to see how it turns out for you guys. Is your swat x1 broken? Or are you just hanging onto the glory days with the OB?
I live in Baltimore County not far from the Patapsco State Park, and the place is over run with deer. I witnessed a deer hit by a car, inside the Baltimore Beltway, on Ingleside Avenue which the Baltimore County Police had to euthanize. They left it on the lawn of Saint John Properties, and a week latter a landscaping crew removed it. Hopefully, the DNR will increase areas for bow hunting along the Patapsco Valley. Something must be done to manage the wildlife better in this area. The deer are becoming pests, devouring the plants and vegetables in the yards of our homes..
Modern technology has come a long way
Exactly!!
@@M1ke_G23 you mentioned Dr woods. He always talks about the white brown line ,right at borrow of chest
@Mike
Isn’t it interesting how many folks out there are complaining about faster crossbows?
Ironic.
You know why I love your channel? You are just a regular guy who works and loves to hunt like the rest of us.
Congratulations on figuring out each bow’s limitations
Let's go! Best crossbow channel! Thanks brother 🤝
I almost quit hunting after a couple of "bad shots" and PM'd you, not even expecting a response. You gave me tips and encouragement that greatly improved my results and kept me in the sport. That's great!
I been watching yur channel for couple of years and enjoy watching
Rich, you shot high. The deer didn't drop that much. Everyone gets doe fever once in a while. 😂
Handy excuse to buy a new crossbow, lol!
RICH, remember if you use the faster bow, you will be tempted to take longer shots. If you don't aim low, the same thing will happen. Don't expect a different outcome in that case. Your my favorite prosecutor, and I enjoyed the fact that you shot a recurve bow. REV X

Thanks for being real and times do change.
I hear ya brother. Sometimes you gotta let go of the old and embrace the new.
I appreciate your honesty. Your experience here was mine with a vertical bow to the point where I stopped archery hunting. A friend convinced me to move to a crossbow. Best hunting equipment purchase I have ever made.
Man, that's great to hear! Good luck to both of us!
After watching numerous times shot is high to start with. I’m sure that after looking at the footage Rich would agree.
I agree

Keep the vlogs coming 😂 these are great
I think Bungie needs a hug.
Love your channel, keep on keeping on.
Bad shots happen! You made a great follow up shot

Great to see you SLAYIN already Rich, hope you and yer girl Genn have a safe and SUPER SUCCESSFUL season bud, God Bless ya'all!🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🔥👊😎
Congratulations. My 1st doe I got last week and she looks just like yours. Had a fawn that looked the same. Coming out of spots. 💪
Congratulations on your first deer !!
That shot is one of the reasons I stopped hunting with my compound bow. I did the same thing and decided to get a modern crossbow..👍🏼👍🏼
💯
How long was the shot? Did you aim low?
Love the added voices. Yes these shots some time happen. Keep grinding away and enjoying the outdoors.
Don't change anything you do.Your followers are here do to the content you put out.Happy Hunting.
Thank you
I totally agree with changing with the times.
The high-pitched voice segments work great haha
You keep us in suspense with to be continued.
Loving your channel like the hunting ones especially 😊
Love round-a-bouts
Can't wait for the next video to come out.
Love the voices.😂😂😂
Hunted with the Swat X1 last year...there is no comparison. I cannot see going back to my old Horton I hunted with for 15 yrs. Had way to many shots not pass thru. Every shot last year with Swat X1 passed clean thru and recovered every deer. Had a record year.

Amazing, I saw a deer running off while you were headed to her at 11:08 in left middle of the screen.
Great video 's
Time to get that Ravin restrung and give her a go in the stand, I think you will really like her! I know a lighted noc is a must for you and you can do it with the Ravin! I build mine from zombie Slayers with an aluminum nock insert and have no issues with extinguishing the luminox any longer.
Good video👍🏻🎉
You definitely proved a point.
But also don’t forget about the Joul (kinetic energy) as slower it gets as faster the energy drops I think 200-300fps is more for 5-20 yards.
Don’t throw away your old crossbow ❤
It's 2x more with a modern crossbow at 80 yards than it is with this one at launch!
I don’t practice enough yet I do make good shots 90 percent of the time. Buck fever with a tendency to rush the shot is my problem. My only excuse is that I hunt in highly vegetated woodlands that offer a very short window of opportunity to take the shot. At least you did not have to track Herr Don't be down on yourself it's hunting in joy it
I'm sorry you're having issues with spining on the OB, but I kinda figured it was going to be an issue eventually, because you're right, the deer have adapted to the faster speeds.
Rich I get it brother I'm still hunting over corn at 15 I guess I'll stick with the Excalibur myself good luck hope you get the big one

Me and wife watch all your stuff never seen you aggravated or disapointed but we all done it you will over come bring out the swat
The only Roundabout I did was on the YES album from the way back machines do you remember love your process keep rocking the Bunjie ss

They just put 1 in my town few years ago…lake traffic I guess
Hi Rich...I was thinking this today how it would be nice for a change in crossbows anyway so my question to you sir is I've been really considering the Swat X1. I ve seen yourself and a few other really enjoying them and they look like a fun crossbow to shoot. Love the simplicity of the excaliber but I think for next year I want to upgrade. From the research I've done one of the most important things to me is the best bang for your buck ...they have had limb issues just like Excalibur has in the past...does KI have those issues behind them now. What is your true honest opinion of upgrading to one?
Stay tuned, love the x1
Great video. BTW, have you ever been told you strongly resemble actor Vince Vaughn?
Great video Richard. Have you stopped using the X1 for good?
Lol not a chance more soon
Im Massachusetts they were always called rotaries no called round about. Who decided this
Who knows lol
I see a lot of round-a-bouts in Hanover PA. I'm from MD though
Heyyyy I’m right in Carroll
@@bombzdeep4475 nice. Near bwi airport here
Better recheck that Oracle X. That shot was high and had nothing to do with the deer ducking the string or Bunjie being slow.
It was both high and a slow crossbow
It really has been hard for me to give up on the OB but stay tuned
Idk bud. My bow shoots 260 and I get complete pass throughs. But I hunt ground blinds. Maybe there's a difference?
Some ppl kill for their food some ppl pay other ppl to kill their food and pick it up at the grocery store nice job D.A Rich
