    I was stubborn and wouldn’t give up my 250 fps Horton until around 6 years ago I had multiple deer jump and get spined, I went to a killer instinct hero 380 and now I have a wicked ridge Blackhawk 360, in my opinion 350 fps should be around the minimum fps nowadays, you have basically no time for the deer to jump at 25 and under yards with 350 fps, glad you are considering switching permanently! Modern technology has come a long way

    I almost quit hunting after a couple of "bad shots" and PM'd you, not even expecting a response. You gave me tips and encouragement that greatly improved my results and kept me in the sport. Since then, I have had the joy of sharing what I harvest with others, introducing them to hunting, and always telling them to subscribe to DBB! I appreciate the entertaining, instructional, and honest content Sir!

  • @hoosierdonkeys8073

    RICH, remember if you use the faster bow, you will be tempted to take longer shots. If you don't aim low, the same thing will happen. Don't expect a different outcome in that case. Your my favorite prosecutor, and I enjoyed the fact that you shot a recurve bow. REV X

  • @theback40
    @theback40 Місяць тому +8

    I empathize with you Rich, sorry you had to go through that. I used to hunt with a recurve bow, instictive shooting. Loved it, and miss it to this day. But I had a doe at 9 yards perfectly broad side and I hit her too far back and had to listen to her bawling out in the swamp for an hour from the pain I inflicted on her. No blood, no recovery. I had thousands of practice shots and many successful kills under my belt too, I was a really good shot. But that one bad shot, all because I wasn't using sights, and it crushed me hearing her pain, and I promised myself right there and then I will always use the most effective equipment legal for the season. So here I am with a crossbow and Oracle X scope now 20 years later. I'm due for a bow upgrade, too, since there are better bows available and I committed to using the best proven tech available. But at least you have made the commitment now, it will be easier on your soul next year, no mental battle on what you are going to use. All the best to you.

    I have two new crossbows to replace my older Barnett reverse curve 340 fps. I bought a Barnett 385, had limb issues my first trip to the blind. One splintered, warranty covered it but in the meantime I made a momentous change to a Mission Sub I XR at over 400 fps. Great success, superb tool with great options. With the Barnett 385 repaired I hope to harvest a deer this season with it. The fact is that both new crossbows are fast and accurate shooting extremely tight groups out to 50 yards with a flat trajectory. The Barnett’s both have an advantage of being light and compact for restricted movement from limited space in stands or blinds. The Mission crossbow is a precision tool meant to last a lifetime.

    I don’t practice enough yet I do make good shots 90 percent of the time. Buck fever with a tendency to rush the shot is my problem. My only excuse is that I hunt in highly vegetated woodlands that offer a very short window of opportunity to take the shot. I shall endeavor to persevere to improve my technic by breathing before I release the bolt I’ve discovered does help.

    Yeah I can’t argue with your logic. I had the option of the axiom or the eclipse. I wanted the higher draw weight not for speed but for power. It’s amazing what 25 extra pounds of draw does.
    The axiom is good don’t get me wrong you got many kills a few pass throughs but as archers we need it more often than not.
    Hey at least this one didn’t go far either right and your were able to do a follow up. So that’s great but no we do not want that on a regular.

    I’m always amazed at how quickly a doe can drop to lunge away by the time the bolt arrives. I too have made too many high and back shots on does. I’ve also upgraded to a faster crossbow for improved speed and accuracy but the key will be for me to aim lower, knowing that deer will still hear the crossbow 1/2 second before that bolt arrives at still drop 4-8 inches.

    Hey Rich, love your channel! However, I really hate to see you get so discouraged with your excalibur! It has been such a reliable piece of equipment! I wonder how many times I have heard you say " I love this crossbow". I shoot a vortex excalibur. It shoots around 330 fps, probably more like 300 fps in reality. It is such a reliable bow! Never had a problem with it! Even when I break it down for the off season, and reassemble it, I usually don't have to zero. It is always spot on. It is slower than the newbies. Technology has out run it. However, I am completely confident with this bow in hand. Watched you shoot completely over the back of a deer at 40 yds with bungee #2. A crossbow that is rate over 400 fps. I always go for the heartshot with my bow and I am rarely ever disappointed. I am extremely confident at 30-35 yds. Watching a deer and interpretting their body language helps a lot when taking the shot. We both know that these bows are not guns. They are not instantaneous! Your original bungee is a great bow! It has served you well. Remember why you love that bow so much. Besides, you have already had to pick that bow back up and use it due to mechanical problems with the newbie!

    Hi Rich...I was thinking this today how it would be nice for a change in crossbows anyway so my question to you sir is I've been really considering the Swat X1. I ve seen yourself and a few other really enjoying them and they look like a fun crossbow to shoot. Love the simplicity of the excaliber but I think for next year I want to upgrade. From the research I've done one of the most important things to me is the best bang for your buck ...they have had limb issues just like Excalibur has in the past...does KI have those issues behind them now. What is your true honest opinion of upgrading to one?

    Better recheck that Oracle X. That shot was high and had nothing to do with the deer ducking the string or Bunjie being slow.

      It was both high and a slow crossbow

      I'm not so sure a faster bow would have made much of a difference. You almost missed her completely. An inch or two lower still means a spine hit. Granted, I'm watching this on a cellphone and can't break down the shot frame by frame. But, from what I can see in the slowed down footage, a faster bow wouldn't have helped you at all.

    You are killin me with the suspense of the swat x1. I’ve been following your channel for a bit now and really like the idea of owning a swat x1. However, with the issues I’ve heard of with them, I’ve been following you and another UA-camr waiting to see how it turns out for you guys. Is your swat x1 broken? Or are you just hanging onto the glory days with the OB?

    I live in Baltimore County not far from the Patapsco State Park, and the place is over run with deer. I witnessed a deer hit by a car, inside the Baltimore Beltway, on Ingleside Avenue which the Baltimore County Police had to euthanize. They left it on the lawn of Saint John Properties, and a week latter a landscaping crew removed it. Hopefully, the DNR will increase areas for bow hunting along the Patapsco Valley. Something must be done to manage the wildlife better in this area. The deer are becoming pests, devouring the plants and vegetables in the yards of our homes..
