Loving these long videos where you go over multiple games, I don't see a lot of stuff that tackles such specific genres/subgenres. Also I really dig the little annotations for the music, they remind me of EA Trax
Advan Racing (PSX) is probably BETTER than Gran Turismo when it comes to core mechanics and content: · It uses a calendar (mainly filled with races for the Sprint and Endurance Championships) and there are scheduling conflicts · The tyres are based after real tyres made by Advan and you can even change the dimensions · Each car is divided into 3 classes · Each car can be modified into the 3 tuner classes · It includes most of the JTCC grid · It includes most of the JGTC grid · It has all big tracks in Japan (plus Suzuka East, the only shortened version) There's a guy here on UA-cam that has a great LP series of Advan Racing's year 1 including the bonus cars you get after winning the points championships (from a McLaren F1 to a Lancia Stratos)
Stellar video Kacey! The only UA-camr who gets car racing games like I do. I remember wanting to get Enthusia so bad after seeing it teased in a gaming magazine. Glad to hear it was one of the better clones.

Final Lap Twin was a racing RPG made for the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 in 1989. Also, Square was making racing games since before they started making RPGs, with one of their first games being Rad Racer for the Famicom/NES.
You said Racing Lagoon was squared first racing game, but I have Rad Racer for NES. Not sure what other racing games they might have had. It’s an arcade racing game in the style of Out Run
As a guy who ended up sticking with Driving Emotion Type-S and actually finish the whole Arcade Type-S mode, let me say in retrospective I wish I didn't spend my time with it. That said, have you checked the control settings and see if the analog range is properly set? The default setting doesn't use the whole analog range for whatever reason. Not like it'll make the game that much better, but it did transform the game from "pretty much unplayable" to "borderline playable". I also found that the Japanese version plays marginally better, since it doesn't have the weird steering autocorrection the western modes have. Also 28:25 Wow, never knew you could flip the car in that game.
Jokes on you, they've literally just announced the new entry in the Grid franchise (titled Legends) which is going to have a story mode again with throwbacks to the original TRD story mode. From the traile, the story looks kind of cringe, if I'm honest, but it who knows. Long gone are the days of TRD, so it doesn't matter anymore at this point.
I'm so fucking happy to see Racing Lagoon being mentioned here. Childhood game, didn't understand a lick of Japanese. And In so glad to see an English translation patch being worked on. I remember asking the forums if there's an English patch for this game over 5 years ago.
Since you mentioned Choro-Q, is there any chance for a retrospective on that series? Almost every game is completely different from the rest yet they're all quirky, interesting experiences. Would love to hear your thoughts on them!
Maybe; I doubt I could find the time/energy to do ALL of them in one go (as there are a fucking LOT of those games) but you'll likely see something about them sooner or later; I've got a few of the games in my collection now.
@@Kaceydotme Cool! I wouldn't expect a look into the entire franchise but I'm glad to know at least some of the games are on the table. Choro-Q the CaRPG and Gadget Racers are two games I'll always think of fondly when I think of "weird 6th gen racing games"

I'm very happy you mentioned GT Cube/Pro Series as it's definitely one of my top favorite racing games ever just for it's arcade gameplay. I always love discussing this to other people as I keep saying, "This is my Gran Turismo." and show them this! Haha.
The only reason I got GT advance as a kid was because I thought it was Gran Turismo on the Gameboy. I was too young and dumb to realize that Gran Turismo was a Sony exclusive. I think they did it on purpose.
14:39 WHEN DID WE DARE SAY SUCH CRUEL THINGS!? 🤣🤣🤣 Almost every racing sim feels different from each other, regardless of competition and similarities. Forza and GT are an example of this.
I don't consider R: Racing to be a GT clone, it has a very limited carroster, no customization and it has a story. It's more of a straight up racer indeed like Codemasters Racedriver.
The one thing Forza Motorsport nailed was the chase cam. It’s funny how the chase cam in the very first game on the OG Xbox is leaps and bounds better than what Gran Turismo 7 has managed 15 years later.
What used to annoy the hell out of me with most of the old racing games were their slow loading screens. Took the industry five generations to get back to cartridge load times.
I absolutely loved R: Racing Evolution even though I was horrible at racing games, It’s one of the main reasons that I fell in love with the dodge viper. Such a shame that the series never went anywhere as I thought that it was really interesting but I’m glad that I’m not the only one who knows of it’s existence, I still have it somewhere in my collection so I may revisit it now that I can actually drive properly lol.
In the end R:Racing was the only GranTurismo like game the GameCube had to offer. I played the story mode and completed every challenge there was aftere the story. It took a long time to master but it was worth it. You unlocked new cars and some cars had upgraded variants to unlock. The same with streets of la/ny. Having at least a alternative for the GC of Ps2 games it did not get was all i needed to enjoy my squared console untill the Ps3 arrived
TXR ZERO for PS2 is the racing game still burnt in my head even though I played 100 times more GT. It felt unique even compared to games that came out after. Tracking down and racing different car club members till you eventually beat their leader.. every member even had a detailed back story. The car tuning and selection ( like 4 door integras to minivans and all expected tuners and everything in between. Man if they made a modern version with more highways/bigger map, being able to start your own race club slightly rpgish maybe with the way you could upgrade your team or something. They were even before the fast and furious (I only know that cause the movies trailer is in the game) also the mini documentary included about the illegal late night Japanese highway racers is sick and I watch it every few years.
I don’t know what is the consensus on the ranking of genki’s racers but I feel like they put their all in making Racing Battle C1 Grand Prix. All that content and polish unlike the games prior led me to believe this.

No racing/rpg games like that.
The cgi is weird, i know.
But can you imagine toyota mr2 with 800hp 2jz engine?
Racing lagoon can do that.
C1 Racing Battle was one of my all-time favorite racing games, even to this day I still have a very fond memories of it and I would even say it heavily influenced my way of viewing racing games.
Enthusia was fun, R Racing was interesting. As someone who enjoys the 2000s, R racing was peak 2000s with the soundtracks and graphics.
R:Racing Evolution tried to combine Ridge Racer Type 4 and Gran Turismo, it was fine really
We need more racing games with an actual story like R: Racing it just adds that something to the game that is missing a lot of the time.
*Kacey:* You probably haven't heard of Racing Lagoon before this video.
*ThorHighHeels:* And I took that personally.
Loving these long videos where you go over multiple games, I don't see a lot of stuff that tackles such specific genres/subgenres. Also I really dig the little annotations for the music, they remind me of EA Trax
Advan Racing (PSX) is probably BETTER than Gran Turismo when it comes to core mechanics and content:
· It uses a calendar (mainly filled with races for the Sprint and Endurance Championships) and there are scheduling conflicts
· The tyres are based after real tyres made by Advan and you can even change the dimensions
· Each car is divided into 3 classes
· Each car can be modified into the 3 tuner classes
· It includes most of the JTCC grid
· It includes most of the JGTC grid
· It has all big tracks in Japan (plus Suzuka East, the only shortened version)
There's a guy here on UA-cam that has a great LP series of Advan Racing's year 1 including the bonus cars you get after winning the points championships (from a McLaren F1 to a Lancia Stratos)
2:13 okay this is something I would actually be really interested in.
Stellar video Kacey! The only UA-camr who gets car racing games like I do. I remember wanting to get Enthusia so bad after seeing it teased in a gaming magazine. Glad to hear it was one of the better clones.
Finally, a cultured person that actually appreciates Sega GT for what it is. I've never seen it as a GT clone personally. It really is in a league of its own.
Type-S really feel like Racing Lagoon, but they set that are sim racing game. So, result? Boom.
I don’t know if it can be considered a “GT clone”, but I feel like it when I play 4x4 Evolution, imo, the GT of 4x4 Vehicles
The UI and customization are definitely heavily inspired by GT
Oh, as a big fan of Enthusia at the time, it fills my heart with joy to hear someone complimenting it now.
I Remember being blown away by clarity of graphics after unlocking GT Hi-Fi mode
If the racing is good, I would reconsider, their past titles in that game to be accounted.
i just want a new Toca Race Driver
@@Blueflag04 I just want an actual sequel to Race Driver Grid 1, with pit lanes, flags, safety cars and weather. Grid 2 etc. don't count.
Driving Emotion Type-S, I found out about literally about a week ago! And now here you are doing a review on it.
I'm so fucking happy to see Racing Lagoon being mentioned here. Childhood game, didn't understand a lick of Japanese.
And In so glad to see an English translation patch being worked on. I remember asking the forums if there's an English patch for this game over 5 years ago.
I had r racing but i sold it a few years ago
Now, i want to play it again but can't find it in any local shop :(
You can probably find it on Amazon
Daihatsu microaggression is the most criminally underrated line in all of racing game UA-cam
R Racing Evolution was the only other racing game I had aside from GT4 on the PS2, so you don't know how quickly I clicked on this video from the thumbnail. While everything you've said about the game is sadly very true, hearing that intro theme song play again sends me back in time. Great video.
sega gt 2002 is still one of my faves
I'm very happy you mentioned GT Cube/Pro Series as it's definitely one of my top favorite racing games ever just for it's arcade gameplay. I always love discussing this to other people as I keep saying, "This is my Gran Turismo." and show them this! Haha.
The only reason I got GT advance as a kid was because I thought it was Gran Turismo on the Gameboy. I was too young and dumb to realize that Gran Turismo was a Sony exclusive. I think they did it on purpose.
I had GT Advance, GT2 Advance, and GT3 Advance and I loved them. But they were DEFINITELY Gran Turismo clones. The rallying one was really fun though!
14:39 WHEN DID WE DARE SAY SUCH CRUEL THINGS!? 🤣🤣🤣
Almost every racing sim feels different from each other, regardless of competition and similarities. Forza and GT are an example of this.
Ah, R Racing: Ace Combat 5 but with cars
and without the V2
I don't consider R: Racing to be a GT clone, it has a very limited carroster, no customization and it has a story.
It's more of a straight up racer indeed like Codemasters Racedriver.
The one thing Forza Motorsport nailed was the chase cam. It’s funny how the chase cam in the very first game on the OG Xbox is leaps and bounds better than what Gran Turismo 7 has managed 15 years later.
gt7's is very adjustable but yeah, not ideal out of box.
gt3's was probably the best but then it moved backwards.
What used to annoy the hell out of me with most of the old racing games were their slow loading screens. Took the industry five generations to get back to cartridge load times.
i like how juiced 2 just got the R racing's stress meter to just make it more useful in events which makes the game more fun.
you are extremely cool for using sa1 music in the background
28:31 WMMT5 in-store battle footage
I absolutely loved R: Racing Evolution even though I was horrible at racing games, It’s one of the main reasons that I fell in love with the dodge viper. Such a shame that the series never went anywhere as I thought that it was really interesting but I’m glad that I’m not the only one who knows of it’s existence, I still have it somewhere in my collection so I may revisit it now that I can actually drive properly lol.
Looking forward to that eventual Sega GT retrospective! 🚘🏁
4:20 omg racing lagoon, I remember it, loved it even though I don't understand it!
I don’t know what is the consensus on the ranking of genki’s racers but I feel like they put their all in making Racing Battle C1 Grand Prix. All that content and polish unlike the games prior led me to believe this.
