  • Put higher front sight on my 2010 Pietta 1860 Army along with modifying the notch in the hammer. Sighting it in with a target load of BlackMZ in 2019. Used the substitute because it was available and cheaper at that time. Now I'm glad I conserved by real black,, as GOEX is no longer available, along with many others.

    Very fine shooting I just love the 1860 Very elegant revolver..I think your right alot of people are in such a hurry I think that's why I enjoy the black powder revolvers

      Yes, from a more civilized time. I have a theory about black powder shooting VS modern. Boom, Bam,Bam and it's all over. Heck, with my 50 cal Kentucky, it's just getting started. Also quite "harsh" compared to black; and, probably just me, and it's terrible to admit, but I think I am slightly addicted to the smell of cleaning. O.R.

    Nice to see those Piettas can shoot that well, the internet driven consensus would have people think Uberti are the only game in town. That thing drives tacks!

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  Рік тому

      Thanks Tom. I agree. Like J. Wales might say, I’ve shot with um, I’ve got no complaints. Admittedly, the Uberti,s finish is probably some better and very original. Pietta has a unique edge with interchangeable parts, (for example, my 1860 barrel will fit the 1851 44 cal frame). I feel both brands are exceptional considering prices. Uberti might have an accuracy edge in the 36’s because of the faster twist, but the Piettas I have can hold their own,, on any day; also, machining and lock up is excellent and extra parts are reasonably priced. Excellent shooting as always, I cant help thinking that one factor effecting placement on the target is the chamber position in the cylinder, have you tried loading the same chamber to see if you get more consistent grouping, looking at your excellent groups they appear to have a pattern, where one shot falls low and left, also as the chambers fire there must be a certain asymmetric recoil effect, I realise I am clutching at straws here, but it would be nice to see if each individual chamber shot to a given point on the target, stay safe ! Chris B.

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  2 роки тому +1

      Good idea Chris. I think that I've been there with the same thought, and tried loading just one. I've also loaded all and started with the same chamber thinking that I might discover the guilty party. No luck, seemed to be random. My thoughts now are that it's possibly a sighting error, or who knows what. I can have similar result from modern, such as S&W K in the Ransom Rest. For whatever reason, one or so will be an inch out of the group. As you know, lots of factors at play, but to my satisfaction, so far, I don't think it's a bad chamber. Maybe I (we) are expecting a little too much, right now I feel these guns will do better than anything modern I've found that's close at all as far as price. O.R.

    So let me start by saying thank you. As I have stated to you before this colt thing has been a long time pet peeve of mine. Those that say colts shoot high so shut up and get use to
    it. Even those who claim that the originals out of the colt factory shot high too because the military spec for 75 yards effective range. Though some what true has not put 2 +2 together to equal 8-12" high at 15 yards equals 6" low at 75. That's a miss calculation of point blank ranging if I ever seen one. The 12" model has arrived and other than 5 very small spots of rust that crept through the packing oil it's in perfectly new condition. Thank you again for the well thought out videos you produce on this subject matter. I can't speak for you but for
    me well let's just say I need to pass down my experience. It is sometimes frustrating to see new shooters take an interest and yet get discouraged and quit because no one helps with the knowledge of experience to achieve reliability and accuracy of such a great technology of the past.
    I have never seen you work with .31 caliber pocket models. Though I need another project like need a whole in my head, I am putting together a custom mold of 4 conical bullet styles for them. Weights are 70, 75, 80, and 90 grains. All I have designed to attempt to fit under a stock loading port of the 1863 which is shorter the the colt pockets.

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  2 роки тому +1

      Wow. That's very interesting. My brother I think has a 31, that's the closest, unless he sold it to help pay for his "Riverboat" trip.
      I'm wondering if the twist will be too slow for the conicals to get stable. Can you get Lee to make the molds?? That could be the pricy part of the project.
      UA-cam is an opportunity to give someone the chance to learn from others--a great thing about the internet; of course it is a double edge sword also. Thanks for the comments as always. O.R.

    Id love to see the ballistic effect of different leftover loading lever marks.
    Would be pretty neat if that lil ring did something to bullet expansion.

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  2 роки тому

      Interesting idea. Sure seems like the fronts get pretty messed with the pure lead, but doesn’t hurt accuracy from what I can tell. The larger round balls deform more as they take considerably more force to seat. Would almost need some sort of ballistic gel to see how much difference. O.R.

      Real short. I think you'll like the BlackMZ. Mfg says no lube and non-corrosive. Not sure you can believe the first. Sure would want something in revolvers to keep the flash-over thing from happening. As far as the second, if it sounds too good to be true,,, well, you can guess the rest. O.R.

    So a update on the .45 caliber 200gr lee real bullet. Molded 110 of them today. As moled they do not start into the cylinder. That being said I happen to have a .449 size die, I fed them in upside down. Sized just the first ridge, then pushed them back out with a wood dowel. They fit just right in the cylinder, and rotate under the loading port of a uberti. The pietta's still do not start into the cylinder after the modification.

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the update. I was wondering how those "Real" would work as far as size. If I remember, the Pietta 44's are in the .446-.447 chamber range, which is why I feel the .451 is large enough. Probably need a .445 or smaller sizer. Going that small might not work well anyway. At least there is a plan for the Uberti, will be interested in hearing more. Thanks again. O.R.

    Was it difficult to get the old sight off the barrel? I was just wondering if they are press fit or actually soldered in place.

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  6 місяців тому

      Wish my memory was better but I believe it was pressed because I don’t recall heating and think I drove it with a punch or small chisel. I think I might have used soft solder on the higher one. If a person doesn’t get carried away when heating, the bluing won’t change “much”. I really need to do another and take notes. O.R.

    Great video!! My Pietta 1860 is shooting low. Is there a way to raise it up???

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  8 місяців тому +1

      Generally these shoot high, you may be lucky because shooting low is usually an easier fix than when they shoot high. The usual way is to lower the front sight by carefully filing it down. Tape some business cards or something on each side to hopefully avoid hitting the barrel with the tool, remembering that it’s hard to put back if too much is taken away. If the windage is correct (left-right) then finish up by narrowing both sides. Example, if shooting to the right, then narrow the left side only. O.R.

    Where can I buy a taller front sight for the 1860 Army?

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  Рік тому +1

      Bill, sorry I don't know because I had to make the one I installed. One place you might try is Dixie Gun works, but mostly if you find anything it would just be a replacement, which, probably won't do what you want if the goal is to lower the point of impact of the shots. O.R.

  • @Gunsmith-4570

    How did you change your front sight, I question because I believe that to be the only way to really sight in the 1860?

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  2 роки тому

      I was afraid someone would ask. Short term memory issue. Too stupid to video it, or too much of a rush. Anyway here goes. On the Pietta 1860 it fits into a half moon slot. Basically it is a slot machined parallel to the barrel. I didn't notice any solder so probably pressed down along the edges to secure it. That slot (about a half inch long) has the profile of a section of a circle that is about 2 inches. I think I had paper under a brass punch that was parallel to the barrel and tapped it from the rear (cylinder end). Believe I put a small dab of flux and piece of solder, heated the barrel enough to melt solder. I'm no gunsmith, but whatever I did seemed to work and hasn't give way (yet). Hope this helps. Proceed with caution, and no small degree of luck. O.R. PS. I think there are some youtube info, maybe one by Duelist, he and others are bound to have done this also.

    How did you replace thefront sight and from where did you get a taller one?

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  2 роки тому +2

      It’s been a while, but I believe the front sight is sort of half moon on the bottom and I used a brass punch to drift it out. I don’t remember if I needed heat. Im quite sure it wasn’t silver soldered because I didn’t use that much heat. I believe I used soft solder on the replacement which I made from some scrap brass. O.R.

      Think I got it in 2019. Sportsman warehouse I believe was dumping it for $10/lb. I got a couple pounds to test. Not long after, I ordered enough for what I hope will last me. Darn happy I did, but my crystal ball was too small to see what was going to happen to GOEX. O.R.
