    Transcript:
I’m Donald Bell for Cool Tools and in this video we’re taking a look at an $8 sink strainer from OXO.
Sink strainers are a kinda gross subject, so I’ll do my best not to disgust you here. Here’s the traditional strainer I’ve used for years. It’s metal, and it has this protruding part that fits into the drain so you can either plug it up or dial in exactly how much water you want to pass around it.
I’m sure there are merits to this design, but my wife and I argue over this thing all the time. When it’s in, it’s barely effective. But half the time it’s not even in the sink because it was being cleaned, or was stopping up the drain.
So this, is better. For one, the large outer lip covers up the whole drain, so nothing’s slipping past it.
Second, the silicone strainer can be pulled inside out, allowing you to easily dump stuff into a compost bin or garbage can.
I do wish that the lip extended out just a little further, just so I couldn’t see any of my drain peeking out - but that’s just an aesthetic complaint, and maybe something unique to my sink.
Overall, it feels like a luxurious upgrade for a sink I use everyday, and the ick factor of cleaning it out is gone for me now. The novelty will probably wear off, but I actually get a kick from ejecting things from this strainer.

Okay...that Older stlye on the right, with the rubber stopper?? I'm highly Educated, but can't figure out for the LIFE of me how to turn it into a strainer?? If it's rotated so the peg isn't in, then some water (and Debris!) will just flow to the outside.

Mine finally tore away near the stem. I own many OXO products that I love, but this one was a dud. I since replaced it with a simple wire mesh strainer (2 for $7 on Amazon) and couldn't be happier.

I recently bought a newer version of this strainer basket, which includes a twistable handle on the center post to control the water flow through the basket, and don't like it at all. It clogs far too easily with even a modest amount of whatever food debris couldn't be scraped into the garbage, and the water can never fully drain out of the sink because of its thickness. I just need to find a regular metal variety that works better with the base I have.

I've got the sink strainer blues!i don't know why it's so hard. My old one wasn't working right - it has that thing in the middle that you turn and then it lets water go through but strains whatever is in the sink - but it doesn't ever work right! I always have to stick my hand in the gross water and pull it up. I tried a fancy $5 silicone one and the lip sticks up too far so water and food pools around it and doesn't even go into the strainer part! Now I just bought a brand new sink strainer - similar to the old one ... this one doesn't work either! it just plugs up the sink - when I turn the center thing it never stays in an area that allows the water to pass through. So once again I have to stick my hand in gross water or angle it to the side causing food to go into the drain. I'm probably going to move because of this! Lol

You can use a SS mesh basket type strainer available online. It's very effective. Diameter 6 inches

CAn they make thinner bottoms? This one won’t work for our master bathroom. It s too wide underneath.

This strainer is not worth it, as it's tall enough to stop water from fully draining. It works in a pinch, but in the long run, best to actually replace the drain with a better system.
