      I know you may not see this Ed, but I havr a question. Also im so greatful for what you do/promote. I am vegan, i grew up on a cattle ranch, i switched for health and i have studied plant base nutrition, its my career path when i leave the american navy. I find that sometimes the morality animal rights perspective can be harder to show/convince people with. I am wondering is there a reason that the majority of your debates are based on the animal suffering perspective and not as much the health and enviornmental perspective? I do think the animal perspective is very important, my question derives just out of curiousity.
      Thank you!

    • @ewanwiebe
      @ewanwiebe 4 роки тому +22

      @@active285 the way we get B12 or at least used to is actually from bacteria. There's a type of bacteria in things like dirt and mud that make B12. In olden days before herbicides and fungicides and before we washed everything so well, we used to eat small trace amounts of dirt which contained bacteria giving us B12. This is how cows used to get it as well. Now with all our chemical use such as herbicides and washing of food before eating it super well those bacteria die and just don't get eaten by us or cows. In conventional factory farming cows and animals are themselves given B12 supplements. So why use the animal as the middle man of a suppliment when I can just take a B12 supplement or eat nutritional yeast as said before.

      To be fair, that girl had a perfectly logical and respectful discussion with Ed though. Like Ed has pointed it out in multiple occasions when you are raised in a certain way your brain takes some things for granted and you make some logical leaps like the one you mention. Her reason for 'euthanizing' the animal was because she would no longer be able to feed it (she said so in the end). And that's a perfectly good reason to do it (almost as valid as an incurable disease) BUT (according to Ed's response) the problem is exactly that. The way the dairy industry is setup, this outcome is expected and unavoidable.

      @cadkls 4 роки тому +11

      @Bartender Plus designed is a charged word, I'm not convinced we were designed.
      You're also appealing to nature as inherently virtuous as a reason for me to accept your argument that we should be vegan on the grounds that we are built to eat both plants and meat. Nature is not inherently virtuous. Just because we have the ability to eat meat, that doesn't necessitate that we ought to do it. You're deriving an ought from an is. It's fallacious.
      This isn't good enough, we can live healthy long lives, longer, actually, by switching over to plant based alternatives. But even the health argument isn't enough to morally justify the exploitation, killing and even torture, of animals.
      Labelling my position as vegan logic does nothing to advance an actual argument and is merely an attempt at ridiculing the position to make it appear weaker than it really is, I suspect, deliberately as a way of easing your own conscience so you can continue to bend over backwards to justify the absolutely abhorrent way we treat animals for the sake of sensory pleasure.
      Evolutionarily speaking, it made sense that early humans required meat, our developing brains meant we needed a source of high calorie, high protein food to fuel our development. This makes sense in an environment where food is scarce and difficult to obtain. Foraging for plants and berries and nuts provided us with nowhere near the nutrition we required, however in the modern day with supermarkets and mass agriculture, we live in an enormously palatable and hyper calorie dense food market, calories and availability of the nutrition that we require are no longer a problem in developed nations, the issue of malnutrition is still an issue of course, one that we do have the ability to solve, unfortunately, nobody actually wants to solve the issue because nobody is prepared to do what is necessary to solve it, making all kinds of justifications for it.
      For example, humans produce enough food to feed the entire world numerous times over, but much of this food goes into producing animal feed, which is an inefficient process, given that it takes so much food and water to produce a kilogram of meat.
      Overall I can't see any reasonable justification for eating meat over plant based alternatives. Health based claims dont hold up to scrutiny, moral claims dont hold up to scrutiny, economic ones. It would be irrational of me to eat meat over plant based alternatives.

Think about her logic "Slaughter is humane because ... " Then she says it's humane up until slaughter - Ok you just disproved your own point. The she jumbles around that there's no stressors, and when asked if she'd have her dog euthanized at a slaughter house, she diverted the question to the euthanasia processes in a vet and didn't answer the question. They talk about stunning as if it is proven to render the animal unconscious and that they feel no pain but that has never been proven to be true in any study that stunning removes nociception or awareness, and you can see the videos of this happening, the animals are still clearly in pain. I emailed the guy who set up these guidelines for this at HSA and he wasn't able to provide any evidence either to defend their own words. They claim:
      "Slaughter can be humane if an animal is protected from avoidable excitement, pain or suffering. To achieve this, the animal must be effectively restrained and then stunned, rendering it insensible to pain, and finally bled rapidly and profusely to ensure death before recovery could occur."
      This statement is self-contradictory as, the pain is in fact avoidable, by not slaughtering animals.

This is the reason why young people make up the majority of vegans, im only 19 but i am glad that i did my research unlike many vegans who only see the surface. Veganism targets the young naive population with a weak moral compass who are used to think based on what they are told rather than thinking for themselves. I actually cannot imagine talking to people like this, I would get too exasperated and emotional. I really admire Ed’s calm and rationale in these discussions 🌱

    What really gets me is just how dense the guy in gray was. He stood there under the guise of listening to what Ed was saying but he completely ignored every fact and logical point made. And the girl beside him whose only goal was to nitpick the slightest variations of wording wasn't much better. Ed, however, handled it graciously as always. You're doing incredible work Ed, I hope one day I can exhibit patience and decorum as consistently as you do.

    This Woman's argument about food safety! This is laughable, she obviously knows nothing about the production of me whatsoever. And I hate even calling meat, a euphemism. It's animal flesh
    I'm referring to the woman at the end of 15 minutes.
    Does she even hear her arguments? They make no sense if you think about it logically. What is wrong with people today?

    It might be useful to give those people links to the studies to support what you are saying. It takes a long time and can be difficult to explain while they are arguing with every point. A card or leaflet with a bunch of studies might be useful to help them to see how destructive animal agriculture is.

    Really interesting that the person who had actual experience with the dairy industry had a way more open minded and balanced conversation than the two who just wanted to justify their actions.
