I don't know what it is about this video. I've seen a million similar, but the smooth water, great music choice and beautiful lighting, combined with the intimacy of a solo experience all come together to make this my number 1, mid-winter, can't wait to get back on the water video. Thank you James.
That was an awesome job on the video. Great editing and photography. Really impressed that you seemed to leave your ego out of it....Very hard for trippers to do that. Thanks for sharing your trip and giving us perspective of Algonquin.
I've been to this beautiful area only once in my life on a 3 day canoe trip. But I immediately fell in love with this peaceful place on earth. Thx for showing me this beauty again
I just want to say that I absolutely love this video. You capture the peace, beauty and serenity of a solo trip so well with this. The footage speaks for itself without need of a play-by-play narrative. This video is almost single-handedly responsible for pushing me to go ahead and buy a canoe. While I wait for the season to start so I can make my first trip I find myself continually scouring youtube for that escape that I am so excited for, and in the back of my mind this is the video to which I find myself measuring all others. Thanks so much for sharing!
I come back to this well-made video time & again. Really captures the solo trip well, the music fits and it is an ideal length. Extra bonus that it's Algonquin!
When I saw the perfect flatwater paddling weather at the start, I just knew some rain would have to show up to make a point, lol. And when I saw the first shots of the campsite I thought, I hope he has a hammock, and of course you did. What a great presentation of the trip. That was an amazing brookie; haven't seen one that nice since on a backcountry lake above the Sand River in Lake Superior PP years ago. Thanks for introducing me to Ben Howard's music, too.
Love that you set it to Ben Howard! The scenery is gorgeous. We're not far from Algonquin, so this has inspired us to look into getting out there next summer. One of the best canoe tripping videos I've seen so far - thanks for sharing!
A wonderful video! This is one of my favourite areas of Algonquin, and your footage makes me want to go back. Also: thanks for answering earlier viewers' questions about the saw you used and the origin of the music. I'll be looking more deeply into both!
Went on a trip through there back as young stubborn teen so I never got to really appreciate what I was doing or where I was but now matured I crave to get out of the city and go on a trip again. Excellent video!
Really enjoyed your video, thank you for sharing! The early mornings, when the water is like glass, is one of my favourites. Looks like you caught some nice fish as well.
Great video James! also loved the music. I also live a few hours away and have never been, new to Kayaking and would love to do this solo trip but with the company of fellow Newbie Paddlers , LOL. James must be the guide.
Thanks for that! Enjoyable to watch while I await my annual Spring trip. It looks like late June? ... and you were still able to find trout. If so, that's encouraging. Makes me want to schedule a summer backcountry trip too.
Fantastic video! This is right up there with wintertrekker vids and a few others. Love the combination of canoeing and bushcraft mixed together. Some beautiful tools you have as well, looks like a GB axe, buck saw not sure and what's the knife a Puukko of some sort. Not the mora u used for fish though. Hope to see more :) cheers
Just catching this today.. very well done. Need more please! Haha.. you should head up to woodland caribou PP.. it is awesome! Would suit this type of video. Cheers
Wow, what a fantastic journey!!! Algonquin is truly beautiful. Great job capturing it's beauty. I would love to know the music chosen, anyone know the artist/songs?
Really nice work on the video. The campsite with the hammock, barrel hang, etc. - was that on the point exposed to a west wind on Big Trout? Looks familiar to me as one where we got hit by a snowstorm one May a few years ago. Thunderbox on the top of the hill, if I remember correctly.
Nice video James! I'm a little jealous. We got nice places in east Tennessee, but not like that. I look forward to your next video. I'll subscribe hoping to see more from you.
Nice video! Us Canadians are spoiled haha. But 2014 was brutal for pollen. Just south of there on Elephant Lake (outside of the park) there were plumes of pollen that I thought were some kind of bugs. I've never seen anything like it.
Great Video! Music is fantastic, I am now a Ben Howard fan. I can relate to your blog comment about forgetting your charger. I did exactly that this summer in Algonquin too. Any chance you could enable this video for mobile devices? I'd like to share it with some people. Did you bring your axe and saw all the way from Australia?
did anyone mention that your fish was a lake trout? that would be a trophy-sized brook trout. and the brook trout have more colourful speckles. really nice vid, though. i stayed on that same campsite on big trout lake. just beautiful.
This video helps me to relieve my stress every day. I really want to go on a canoe trip. I have never been to this place even though it's only 3 hours drive away. Wish I could go with someone :(
There seems to be a lot of videos about your Algonquin park in Canada.... but your Canadian culture is different than our USA ways.... which I like 😀 Americans are spoiled and don’t appreciate what they have in their own back yards. Very beautiful video thanks for sharing.
What kind of tripod did you bring along for the camera on this trip James? All the rest of your kit was excellent by the way. What type of bow saw was that?
I didn't have a tripod, I just strapped my GoPro onto trees or balanced on top of rocks. There is a store in Toronto called 'Canadian Outdoor Equipment Co' that makes their own bow saw’s, very good quality and makes light work of big jobs.
James Walford Worked great! The GoPro Hero 3? Took awesome video footage and pics. Yes I've done business with the Canadian Outdoor Equipment Co. a number of times, thanks!
Cool video. I like your style and had to give you a subscribe. I also make movies of my Adirondack canoe camping trips in my Old Town Pack Canoe. Keep up the good work!
Great video if I had the patience for editing I would post more of my own. Having done Algonquin numerous times I was reminded of all the gear I used to bring. Portages must have been hell. Every trip I eliminate items I don't use. All my gear now fits in one pack including food. Portages are done in one trip. My last 3 trips were solo. My first solo I used the solo canoe. Here is the video that taught me how to paddle better than most. www.nfb.ca/film/path_of_the_paddle_solo_basic/
Hi Martin, Thanks for the feedback! A few ppl have commented on the ‘Splake’, I should have been more specific and have since updated the blog - 4 were too small and I released back but I didn't even get the fish species right. I based this from the back of Jeff’s map but after looking on the web they were actually Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis). Sorry for the confusion and I hope the bag limit for Lake Whitefish wasn’t less than 4!
James Walford First off Jim I'm not giving you a hard time at all. I think your video, trip report, and adventure were awesome! Thank you for sharing. The fish in the pan do look like Whitefish or maybe Fallfish. A little hard to tell from the video. Either way you are OK with 4 :)
Cool trip! Thanks for sharing! Been through those areas many times - we just posted the first video of our recent trip in the park if you're interested :)

+Richard Brown Agreed, just great editing and music choice
My stress and blood pressure drop every time I watch this. Thanks for sharing.
That was an awesome job on the video. Great editing and photography. Really impressed that you seemed to leave your ego out of it....Very hard for trippers to do that. Thanks for sharing your trip and giving us perspective of Algonquin.
Great job James! ... the lack of babble is greatly appreciated.

Cool trip! Thanks for sharing! Been through those areas many times - we just posted the first video of our recent trip in the park if you're interested :)
cool
You just made this video 9 million times better by using Ben Howard!
I cringed when I saw you hang the food IN CAMP... Great vid though.
*Thanks. Very interesting. I will be friends with your channel. I invite you to walk through the woods with me if you want ..... like 563 Natalya *
👎 people don’t click on this to listen to you music. They want to see & HEAR nature. Exiting out.
Beleave me you didn't want to hear the crap sound I had from a GoPro3 with a water proof case. Besides @BenHoward rocks!
Artificial music drowned out nature. Ruined it
